Summer Skin
I think there's a genre for this, I just can't remember the name. I know it's fiction.

Plot

“We’re infected. We’re infected and we’re going to die.”

Some say it’s the Devil’s curse. Some say that it’s vengeful spirits of the enemies of the village. People are getting superstitious, and anything could be a sign of their coming doom. Well, it tends to happen when your doom is indeed in danger of coming. Our doom comes in the form of a sickness.

It struck about a month ago, and wasn’t widely known about, mainly because it was kept in secret. A disease that turned you to a demon and ripped you from the inside out. That would cause mass panic, something not so good in such a small village. They said it struck you when you were changing the most, so it was mostly babies and adolescents that were effected, though some children got it too. It only killed a few at first, but then it started to spread quicker, and quicker. There was no cure for it, it wasn’t a manifestation of any other disease that the village had had. No cure, no classification, and no name. No name for this unspeakable horror that left us here to die.

The village was deserted, the only people left were the ones that had the disease, about seventeen, eighteen or so. They left food and water, enough to last about a year or two, because that’s how long they figured it would be before the disease overtook all of us. They deserted the entire town, and I don’t think they plan on coming back, considering what I overheard from the adults. Well, it’s their safest bet, never coming back, if the disease lingers in our bodies.

Left here to die. Every single one of us.

Setting:

The story takes place in what would be the 1940s, provided this took place in the real world. It takes place in a small village, grown significantly smaller, due to everyone deserting it in fear of the disease. It’s located near a few other towns, but other than that, it’s fairly isolated. The town is located up towards the north, but it is fairly temperate now, since it is autumn. (Think Northeast United States, preferably Vermont). Most of the people in town are farmers, or were. All crops are left for the diseased to eat, and there is an ample supply of water.

People:

The population is currently 16 and dropping at a slow rate. Six of the inhabitants are babies, ten are in their teens (this term is used loosely, think 12-19). All are infected with a deadly disease. The society is disorganized, since it has only been a week since it formed.

Technology:

If you need to, look it up, it’s probably floating around on the Internets somewhere. The kind of technology that people had in the forties. Keep in mind that this is somewhat out in the boondocks, so they wouldn’t have much. Electric lighting, the odd phonograph, that sort of thing. They probably wouldn’t get much of a signal as far as radio and that sort of thing goes. Yes, there was a school.

Resources:

Most of the houses still exist, and all of the stuff that the diseased had as far as possessions go is still there for them. There is some stuff that other people left behind, but not much. There is a large stock of dried food, as well as what’s in the fields. There are also animals, chickens and cows and the like, but not too many.

The disease (This is very important!):

Basically, it rips you apart from the inside. First, what happens is that you start to feel a bit funny, nothing serious, like a stomach flu. Then, the change starts to happen. You grow some sort of funny animal-like feature, like scales or small wings. It starts to grow, and gradually, for example, if you had scales, they would spread all over your body. This doesn’t sound particularly bad, does it? Even kind of cool, in a way. They can’t do anything much, but it looks kind of cool, depending on what you have. But it gets much worse. The problem lies underneath your skin. The features take root in your body, like a plant, and grow into your internal organs, puncturing them, and killing you. That’s about the only point where it’s seriously painful, and people have been known to go crazy, even committing suicide to escape the pain. The whole ordeal lasts about seven or eight months.

Currently: It’s October 17th, sunny, and about afternoon.

Rules.
I’ll keep these short and simple.

1. Be literate. This means proper spelling and grammar, five sentences minimum, no *’s for actions, and “” when speaking. No one, two, or three liners.
2. Please follow the AMP, located here.
3. Please be realistic with the time and place, and there is no magic. Yes, your character can have slight enhancement depending on their features. One restriction I will put on it is that your character can’t fly, because it would take extremely big wings to lift a human.
4. Please do not make a Mary-Sue for a character, it’s kind of boring. If you don’t know what a Mary-Sue is, please refer here, it’s a pretty good description.
5. Please follow the board rules.
6. Please be detailed with your profile, and I’d prefer it if you didn’t use anime (I know how many people are going to listen to that one).
7. PM me your profile, title it “Freckles”.
8. Romance is encouraged, but don’t go too far with it. Yaoi/Yuri is allowed.
9. Please don’t fill up too many pages with OOC.

Username: Kites.sun
Name: Abby Hamlin
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Appearance: [x] (her hair is a bit longer in the back)
Features: Abby has whitish and brown feathers growing on her arms and upper back, coming up to the back of her neck. She can see slightly farther than average, and has a good sense of direction.
Personality: Abby is an innocent soul, with a rather childish spirit. She has a tendency to get bored easily, but can entertain herself. She’s been very sullen since she found out she had the disease, and still seems to be trying to accept the fact that she’s dying. Abby is sensitive, and cries a lot, but who can blame her, considering the situation she’s in? She is pretty good at taking care of the babies and cooking, and doesn’t mind doing it. She’s trying her best to adapt to her situation, but she misses her family very much. She doesn’t like seeing things in pain, and she sometimes acts rashly on it. Though she cries, she’s very calm, and is hardly seen yelling.
Bio: Abby was born and raised in the village, her parents owned a shop and made enough to live comfortably off of. She learned most of what she knows from an old collection of children’s encyclopedias and a few other books. She was liked in the village, though some people thought of her as annoying and stupid because of her nature. She was a healthy girl, got average grades, and did housework unwillingly. She got the disease about a month ago, and her parents went absolutely crazy on her, pulling her from school to do almost everything in their power to help her. She was bedridden, even though she really didn’t need to be, and really didn’t want to, but ended up just getting out of bed and trying to move on with her life after she was deserted. She instantly took up the job of taking care of the babies, and spent most of her time with them, taking a liking to a particular one who she called Daisy (she was never very good with names), who was almost into the last stages of the disease. She practically attached herself to Daisy, and was always with her when she had the spare minute. When Daisy started to go into the last stages of the disease, Abby seemed to share her pain. She couldn’t bare to see the little baby in pain, so she did something she tries to convince herself was the right thing, but has a lot of regret for doing. She saw the baby suffering, couldn’t take it anymore, and choked the baby. No one seemed to notice, and she tried very hard not to act guilty, which was pretty easy, because all she did was cry and mourn over the infant. No one knows she did it, and those that do are keeping their mouths shut. She’s less interested in the babies, but still tends to them.
Other: Abby currently lives in a house close to the center of town, and still has the furniture from her house.

She looked around, her bright blue eyes scanning the room. She put her fists on her lap, and sighed. The broken clock on the wall said it was 5, but she knew better. She had looked out the window a few minutes ago, and the sun was far too high in the cold autmn sky. It was around afternoon, she guessed early, like the time when you should be eating lunch. She wasn't hungry, though, the things that always knawed at her stomach were alliviating that, they seemed to quell her thoughts of food. Most of the babies were sleeping, she had managed to calm them down. So now, here she sat, waiting for another person to come in.
A girl of fourteen, skinnyish, though not athletic. Her hair was brown, something fairly usual, and had been cut short, as was practical. Her skin was a peaches-and-cream color. There was nothing paticularly uncommon about her, aside from that far away look that she seemed to take on, even when she was occupied. She wore a navy long-sleeved shirt, and over that, a large, tattered grey man's jacket, something her father had left her. Obviously, he had thought that she would have taken more to the field, as, to him, she never liked cleaning. Well, it was warm, she gave him that. She wore a plain light blue skirt, and brown shoes, not the most fashionable thing to wear, but it worked. Who did she have to impress? It wasn't like she was getting a job in the movies, or needed to go anywhere special. She was stuck here, and to her, there was no point in running away, it wasn't like there was anyplace good for her, or anyone else who had been abandoned her. With that, her eyes started to water, as they tended to. She heard the door open as another girl, one a bit older than her walked in. The girl who had just come in said, "Abby...", giving her a pitying look.
Abby forcibly began to push her feelings away, smiled, and said, "I finally get out of here. They're all asleep, don't worry about it", she said, putting her finger to her lips.
She headed out the door, and into the world that October had created, a world where the leaves had turned brown and scattered, and everything seemed to take on a reddish-brown tone. She didn't pay any note of this, she had seen it all her life. It was nice out, though a bit windy, as it tended to get around here. She walked around the village, trying to decide what she should do.
