As we are all fully aware of, in the sixth Harry potter book, Ollivander, the clever wandmaker disappeared during Harry's isxth year, as well as Florean Fortescue., who gave Harry free sundaes and assisted him with his History of Magic homework in Harry's third year. But why did these kind gentlemen disappear? What does a Drak Lord have to do with an icecream maker, and an innocent(for now) wand maker?

My own theories:
In the first Harry Potter book, Ollivander's wand shop is described as narrow and shabby. The door reads Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 BC. A single wand lay on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window. Why one wand, and why this one?

Well, as we all know, every house posseses their special items. Gryffindor has the sword, which symbolizes strength and being fearless, what Gryffindor is all about.. Hufflepuff has the cup which symbolizes to me at least sharing, and kindness because of the fact that it's a cup that can be held and drnk out of. Slytherin's locket represents the need for power, because a locket encloses something, and power is the thing Slytherinbs are trying to enclose. The snake on the locket tops it off. Ravenclaw however remais currently itemless.
My theory is that this wand in Ollivanders shop, is Rowena Ravenclaw's. Raveneclaw symbolizes cleverness, so a wand would be a perfect fit to macth this house as an item.
Perhaps Ollivanders disappearance could be related to this special wand in his windosill, or perhaps not. This remains unseeen by most eyes, but I could not help noticing it after reading it approximately 20 times. Ollivander might be lurking with the dark lord...or perhaps not. He seems like a clever man., I could see him in Ravenclaw, inheriting this special treasure. Could this wand be linked to his disappearance?

Moving onto Florean. For Florean, I do not have any theories. The most I can cultivate is that he gives out icecream. I have re-read bits when Harry is in Diagon Alley in the firts, second, and third books, however with Florean I remain dumbfounded. All Igather from Florean is that he is an icecream maker.

This is the sentence I cultivated from Prisoner of Azkaban that has him in it:
Harry didn't have to do his homework anymore under the blankets by torchlight anymore;now he could sit in the bright sunshine outside Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour, finsihing all his essays with occasional help from Florean Fortescue himself who, apart from knowing a great deal about medieval witch-burnings, gave Harry free Sundays every half hour.

As well as a really small sentence:They were there, both of them, sitting outside Florean Fortescues Ice-Cream Parlour; Ron looking incredibly freckly, Hermione very brown, both waving frantically at him.

After this, I did not find any further mention of the parlour throughout the book, although I could be mistaken. During the part above, there is only discussion, and no observations of objects that I noticed.
I found no trace of Florean in the first book. Nor in the sixth, either than the sentence claming his disappearance. I have not found anyone who has a similar last name to Florean's, because relatives and relationships could be the reason. In the second book, they were too focused in Diagon Alley with Ginny, Lucius and Draco to go for ice cream. I currently find myself without the fourth book, so I cannnot say that I haven't found anyhting.

Here is a topic to post your opinions on my Ollviander theory, and what you think happened to Fortescue, and why. You can debate with other memebrs in this thread, as well as post your own theories. You can also critisize my research, if I am incorrect. Feel free to add in your own research as well.
Enjoy!

I've got my wings ..

Wow. You worked hard on this.
I'll congratulate you on your hard work and efforts!

I think your theory seems good, and possible. Why would Ollivander treat that wand so specially if it wasn't a special wand? I, personally voted 'the wand on the purple cushion is a wand on a purple cushion' because I don't know who's wand it could possibly be. There are too many possibilities, they confuzzled me.

Now, I shall magically disappear leaving you all to wonder how I, Moesy, a bright Ravenclaw, got confuzzled so easily. -salutes, then disapparates-

But nowhere to fly.

Thank you very much! Yes I agree. It seems very weird that he would treat this wand special, and not the others.

I have a theroy on this, in the first book, when harry's getting his wand Ollivander say's 'the dark lord did grate things.' Ollivander would be a usefull person to have on you'er sied, Voldie wouldnt defently think so anyway... as we alredy know Ollivander already thinks he was brilliant even if he wasnt alredy on the darksied I dont think he would take much persuadeing. I think he left to work for voldomort. I know it's crudy and obvious but thats what i think.

Yes....I agree. I think Ollivande rmight have seen his power and joined him...posibbly. But I still think that wand is relevant. It makes sense in my opinion, and he did go missing.

I dun wanna be sucky... But, is it possible they just dissapeared, I don't have my books on hand, or the time to search for quotes... But the last time voldemort was on the rise, weren't people just dissapearing then too?

I mean, it could be terribly sinister, but... It could just be random dissapearances. Perhaps they fled to avoid the coming troubles?

yes...but both attacks were related....in the same region...which is very fishy.

Yes Ollivander rocked. But he had a dark side to him, like what Miss Mainwarning said....he did say that the dark lord did great things. This puts me more on the side of the wand is a horcrux.

It is possible that the wand was a horcrux but look at all the trouble Dumbledore went through to get the others. Its a bit too easy to get to, think about it if this was your horcux would you just lave it on a cushion in a shop window?

Agreed. If you think of what Voldemort did with the locket, I doubt he'd give it to Olivander to stick on a cushion in his shop window...

Alright, here we go......We all know that I go nuts on stuff when it comes to theories and things I believe strongly in...I mean, just LOOK at my post in the Snape-Dumbles or Voldie Thread...

In regards to Ollivander...As you have kindly pointed out...House objects have so far included a Sword, a CHALICE, and a Pendant/Locket.
Now, for those of you who are familiar with real magic (aka, paganism and wand work, like me), you will know about the Ancient Tarot.
Their are Major Arcana in the Tarot deck (The Fool, The Magician, Death, The Wheel of Fortune, etc.) and minor Arcana. The minro Arcana consist of Swords, Chalices, Pentacles, and Wands.

Swords and Chalices in referrence to the book speak for themselves, but when we come to the Pendant, that's when things get a little trickier.
I have speculated over two possible reasons for it not being completely congruent to the other Arcana. One, 'Pentacle' sounds a bit like 'Pendant', (Heh, far fetched, I know), and Two, in the original Tarot Deck, the Raider Wuite deck, the pentacle is oft portrayed as a necklace, worn by dictators, or Queens.

It would make sense for J.K Rowling to be heading in the direction of teh Four Minor Arcana, as not only is it REAL magick, but evidence points towards it being so.

Which finally concludes that the last House Horcrux, of Lady Ravencalw, would be The Wand.

But whether that 'wand on a purple cushion' is Ravenclaw's or not, is an entirely different story.

Think about it rationally. Would Ollivander, a rather intelligent, and crafty individual, really leave such a meaningful, rare, and cherished item, in the front window of his shop, in plain sight? True, he may not have known that Voldemort had used it as a Horcrux, and he might have figured that passerby would not question the history of the wand, thinking it to be nothing more than an example of his work. Which it very well could be.

So, the question remains: Was the wand truly a Horcrux, did it even belong to Ravenclaw, or is the Ravenclaw Horcrux even a wand to begin with? Or was that wand, simply just a wand he had on display so people could see an example of his work? But, if that's the case, then why did he go missing?

My next point, about his disappearance, coincides with Fortescue, as well. If the wand was a Horcrux, well, then we know why he dissappeared. But if it wasn't, then why would he go missing?

Was he to be commisioned to craft a new wand for Voldemort, so that the Dark Lord would no longer fear the Priori Incantatem? Or was he kept away because he is a Wandmaker, and Voldemort wanted to try and put the Wizarding World in more grief, and anxiousness, not allowing new wizards and witches, just come of age, to get a wand, unles they went to an entirely different country? Or did Ollivander have information he wanted on another person's wand? Harry's, perhaps? Dumbledore's? Or maybe records from his ancestors about Rowena Ravenclaw's?

Or, in revelance with Fortescue, did he 'go missing' at the same time because Voldemort killed (OR) captured him, as a first blow to the Economy of the Wizarding World.

Both were predominent providers in Diagon Alley; Each business was immensely successful. Ollivander's provided everyone with wands, a tool required to perform magic of any kind, and Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour has hundreds of customer's a day. Perhaps Voldemort knew of Harry's frequent visits to the parlour, and he planned on questioning old Fortescue about behavioral habits, or information on his personal life. People he was with. People he seemed to like, or interact with friendly-like. Perhaps he wanted this information in order to have something against Potter, so that he could hurt people that mattered most to him, to break him.

Or maybe, he is planning to slowly rid the Wizarding World of it's most prized assests, last to be Gringott's Bank. First, Ollivander and Fortescue's, then, maybe Florish and Blotts, or Madam Malkin?

Who knows...
