As the alpha male, Nobleheart had considered it his duty to provide for Trueheart while the children were still tiny and needed constant tending....however, his beloved simply wouldn't hear of this. They had compromised on taking turns tending their clutch while the other went out to forage.
Now was one of the times it had happened to be his turn as he laid, curled around the trio of hatchlings and all but radiating fatherly pride. It was odd, being a father....of course, he had considered himself somewhat of a father to the others, but had known in his heart of hearts he was simply their guardian.
To know that these chicks were flesh of his flesh was...well, it was indescribable. Smiling, he leaned down to nuzzle the three children gently as they slept.
When he arrived at the tiny yellow chick that most resembled her mother, however, she awoke with a squeak, nosing blindly at the air and at her father's muzzle in confusion. For good measure, she squeaked again, her infantile voice carrying a high and jangling noise like someone had rung a handful of windchimes together.
Nobleheart knitted his brow. "Shhh..." he whispered, nuzzling her again. "You're safe, my little one, I promise." While he knew the other two were far too young to hear or see just yet, he wasn't particularly worried about her noise awakening them. When she persisted, he took the scruff of her neck gently in his teeth and relocated her between his front paws to cradle her and groom her soothingly
Prismheart flinched a bit at the warm tongue washing over her head and between her wings before calming down again. She found she liked mommy's scent over daddy's....while both were comforting, mommy's scent was sweeter. Brighter, if possible. Daddy kind of smelled like marshmallows. Where WAS mommy? Lifting her head again to scent the air, she whimpered.
Nobleheart rested his head on top of hers gently and then began to sing a song he'd sometimes heard the human folk of Haelington sing to their young ones while putting them to bed.
Twinkle, twinkle little star How I wonder what you are Up above the world so high Like a diamond in the sky...
The vibration of his voice was like an immediate sedative as Prismheart gave a faint peep, squirmed one more time, and then was deeply asleep once more.
Twinkle twinkle little star How I wonder what...you....are....
He knew before even finishing the song that his daughter was asleep again and smiled warmly. They were such beautiful children...all three of them, and well-worth waiting for. He and Trueheart, he felt, had truly been blessed.
