So, I know that with this generation's "punk" stereotype, a lot of good music is forgotton about, and instead replaced by bands that are hardly what most would consider punk.
So what's your definition of punk music? What are some good punk bands? (I notice how little punk music I actually own as I flip through my cds right now...)

Well, as I've always said, punk and what punk music "is" will mean different things to different people. I've heard your typical fast 80's hardcore bands, and I would consider that to be punk. But I've also heard bands that use chellos and acoustic guitars, and I would also consider that to be punk.
But anyway. I'd suggest bands, but there's so many different subgenres of punk. It's difficult to reccomend something that you'd like.
Lately I've been on a 82' punk kick. Threats, External Menace, The Ejected, blah blah blah.

Liek, OMG! Blink 182 is teh kewlest and most punk band evar! *shoots self in face with pixi gun*
. . . but, enough joking. It's kinda sad to see how such bands like Blink 182 and Simple Plan are considered punk by our generation. Hardly anyone of our generation knows what real punk music is.
The Buzzcocks, The Ramons, The Dead Kennedys, Anti Flag, Black Flag, Misfits.
There are are more, I just can't think of anymore at the moment.
And I don't care what anyone says, but Green Day is not punk.

I like Blink-182, but I know they aren't punk. And I can honestly say I never listened to a lot of Simple Plan.
I've never heard of the Buzzcocks before.
After looking through my cds again, the only punk CD I own is Crass's "Yes sir, I will".
But what defines punk music? Is it just the message of anti-establishment, sex, and music that makes it punk, or is it the actual sound?

i think its a comination of lyrics and music
some bands dont sound like punk at all (folk bands) but they have the lyrics.
some bands dont have the lyrics but they have the music (pop punk, i mean not to put anyone down on this)
and so when i just have the lyrics and not the music, i see to the artist and its self-definition. (this bike is a pipebomb define themselves as folk-punk, from what ive read.)
other bands like propagandhi say they are not punk and i respect that (and prefer that).
i think that getting away from a label that is so open and ambiguous like punk is good, since its only representative. and since o much stereotype can come out of it...
when i dont fit into punk attitud i just dont give a ******** lol.
i like anarcho and crust.
good bands: conflict, a-political, crass, anthrax, assuck, concrete sox, boikot (commies), los muertos de cristo, mdc, politicide, proletariat, propagandhi, the system (in alphabetical order lol)

Plural of cello is cellos. I think. I've always been the only cello around so I never had the oppertunity to use the plural xd
Hmm, music...lately I've been into thrash and power violence. Charles Bronson heart , Municipal Waste, Magrudergrind, Common Enemy, Hirax. Also a lot of the Flatliners and No-Ca$h, but they don't fit in the afformentioned category.

I'm sure thats what people who liked in the 70's thought about punk in the 80's and same for the 90's...and now..here we are.
Blink was considered a punk band..
have you heard there ealry stuff ?
what make them not punk ? lyrics..
then what about isocracy a well know punk band, they have some of the stupidest lyrics.
And green day isnt punk..thats debatable..a debate that could go on forever.

As for what punk music is definition wise.
The statement " Who are you to say what punk is and what it isnt "
stands the test...
I have what I think is.
And its my opinion. In the begining of punk it was primarly that the lyrics didnt matter and then it was all about the lyrics..then the look..and it goes back and forth..
But I honestly think if it were for lyrics only, then bands like pearl jam would be considered punk XP.
I really like operation ivy, isocracy, squirtgun, screeching weasel
The replacements...yesterday's kid, auntie christ, Nipls...
stuff with a very uppy feel..

Green day is not punk (well at least not their new sh-t.) they have gone mainstream, and to me, punk isn't mainstream. true punk is a dying breed (like the lower class brats said) and it is very sad as we watch all those wanna-be punks fall for those 5 miniute wanna-be mainstream "punk" bands. u know what im saying? to me, punk is what you make of things, not what others make of it. anyway, i will admit i listen to metal more than punk, but sum of the bands i like would be the adicts, the toy dolls, the lower class brats, and most of those in the clockwork hero scene.

The Generation Y (1990 and onward) version of punk music is Noise. It's a style of music that's been around for a pretty long time, but has just recently become more popular.
Noise is definitly an aquired tast. You'll either hate it or love it.
But, really, I call it our generations punk because it's alot like punk music. Aside from being hate by most people, mothers blaming it for s**t and being criticized as not being music. The music and people who are into it have a real"I don't give a ********.

The Blink 182 quote is the gayest thing I've ever heard.
The Green Day quote is the only cool thing I've ever heard Billy say. Green Day is just a trend. Trying to make a buck off of people who think that a band that was once considered punk is punk. I don't think it's punk to have prepps buy and love your album.
