Just reread Fellowship of the Ring for the 9th time and i cant figure out what the story of Old Man Willow is, He is mentioned as they are telling stories the day after they are rescued, but nothing is openly said in the book about him
anyone know?

I got the impression he was just a tree that had come alive (not an ent) and is for some reason angry at the world. Sorry I can't give a more educated respomse sweatdrop

They are given a name in the second books, similar to ents...starts with an 'M'...

I'm not sure what they're called, but I always thought that Old Man Willow was kind of like the trees that the Ents herd. Half awake, but if they don't have a herdsman, they can do whatever they like and wreak havoc if they've got a bad soul.

Old Forest: In Lotr... blah... At the heart of the forest was the malevolent figure of Old Man Willow. The Withywindlw flowed through forest... blah blah...
Not much about him here. Man this book sucks.
I thought he was just another sleeping tree.

.Well actually, old man Willow is kinda like a guardian of the forest. The guardian of Fangorn, if you like.
In the past, he used to be a faithful servant/guard of Treebeard. But as said in the first/second book (I forgot which), the trees suddenly began to turn "black", evil in some ways. Old man Willow is one of them. Since his turning to "the dark side", he's been attacking innocent travelers who's unfortunate enough to stop by this great tree to rest under its shade. Too bad that there are too few of the Ents now, eh? neutral
Sorry if all though sounded kinda weird/blurred. I can't think very clear right now.

WOW!! look what I found about The Willow:
Huorns: Among the most ancient... For many ages they grew peacefuly... but in Middle-earth... came the Ents... Some ents became more tree like.. and some of the ancient trees became more Ent like... that was named the Huorns... Moslty the Huorns stood like dark trees in the deepest forest... some were blackhearted and rotten... Old man willow wished to preent any further inroads into his realm...
Willows: ... [Old Man Willow] was blackhearted, limblithe and filled with a great enchanting power of song... All the land of the Old forest was held in sawy by his will. His great sing bent all paths to his feet...
Atleast we know what he his now.

But, Vengeful Password, he wasn't one of Treebeard's trees, cause that would mean he would have had to go back to the days when all the great woods connected to eachother. The huorns came after that, didn't they? or at least, it is too far back for Old Man Willow to have been a part of the initial corruption. I think Old Man Willow was just a huorn tree who controlled basically the whole of the Old Forest and didn't like tresspassers, but he was very loyal to his forest. And he had to obey Tom Bombadil (or treebeard if you see the extended movie), but everyone obeyed Tom cause he was the old one. the oldest. So I think that he was pretty muchin control of everything in the whole forest if Tom hadn't come along.

i don't know.. i was wondering about him too... i have this theory that he is a huorn.. a tree that become kinda entish but not quite.... and with all the evil and anger in him his heart is rotten.
