You all first come together through a wizard named Gordrenn. He has recruited you all to deliver an important chest of "material components" to the wizard Tauster, who lives in the village of Thurmaster in a town called Haranshire. Gordrenn's normal delivery men had left him for better pay elsewhere, but he was desperate enough to have it delvered by a group of rag-tag adventurers he's never met before. "Nothing terribly expensive or important, but Tauster gets very huffy if I'm even a day late," he admits.
He originally offered you 150 gp (gold pieces) to take the chest, but you were able to haggle him up to 180 gp. "And don't even think about stealing it," he's warned you. "It's gota wizard's mark inside it, and I'll know wherever it is. Steal it and I'll send all kinds of bad things after you."
After persuading you all to do the job, he had a formal contract drawn up that laid out the terms, with all of your signatures on it as well as his, witnessed at the nearest temple. Then he gave you a letter of credit, which will be redeemable for the gold you've been promised after, and only after, Tauster has signed it.
You have now just set off, and are just now getting the chance to talk among yourselves and get to know eachother.
The following have been added to the party inventory:
Gordrenn's chest A copy of Gordrenn's contract Letter of credit (unsigned)

Keitaro walked quietly near the center of the group, looking for all the world like he was not paying one whit of attention to anything around him. His face was placcid, his expression vacant, as he walked quietly along with the rest of the group. Indeed, even his footsteps were silent, and the ground where he walked was undisturbed. It was his eyes, though, which give him away. Like twin portals into the deep blue sea, they scanned the surrounding environment watchfully.
Taking up a defensive position in the rear, though giving no outward signs as to his intent, Keitaro opened his senses to the world around him. Determined to keep safe his companions, he waited and watched as the group made its way forward.

Walking on the right hand side of the group, Gwaerandir inhaled the smell of life around them. His right hand resting on the hilt of Artemis, he barely noticed Keitaro's quiet movement to the back of the group. He put the hood of his cloak back and focused his hearing, ignoring the quiet sounds of the group as they travelled. Gwaerandir kept his head foreward, but scanned the surroundings with his eyes.

Both percieved nothing out of the ordinary. The forest was quiet and peaceful, not in a "calm before the storm" kind of way, but in a "nothing strange is going on" kind of way.

Althea silently looked from each of her fellow party members to the next. They all seemed interesting, and she wondered where they all came from and where they would be going off to once they'd delivered the chest.
She began humming a simple, quaint little tune as they walked. She was getting just a little bored.

Gwaerandir relaxed a little bit when nothing strange happened. He smiled as a cool breeze washed over the group. The songs of birds in the distance soothed him.
He noticed one of the songs was not a bird's, but from one of the group. Gwaerandir glanced over to his left, his eyes brushing across the small band. His gaze stopped at Althea, who was still humming.
Moving closer to her, he offerred her a polite smile.
"So, we have a long journey ahead of us. I wonder if we'll encounter any surprises along the way."

"Indeed," she answered. "But I do not sense that we will--at least not today." She nodded in self-affirmation and then smiled, looking back at him. "What manner of fate brought you to Gordrenn, that you would accompany us on this journey?"

He glanced off into the distance for a moment before responding. "I am on a quest to find my family. In search of them, I learn of quests such as this one that may help me find them someday." He glanced back at her. "How did you come to be a part of our merry little group, fair lady?"

Althea smiled the way one does when one thinks about one's closest loved one.
"Imhotep sends me where he chooses," she said with great reverence. Then, "It is a pleasure to be travelling with you."
She eyed the others in the group. Their silence was making her a wee bit uncomfortable.

Gwaerandir smiled back at her. "The pleasure is mine, mi'lady." He turned his attention to the path ahead and closed his eyes for a moment as another cool breeze flowed over them. His sword, Artemis, glowed for a moment.

Keitaro spoke suddenly into the stillness of the warm day's air. "Let us hope we do not encounter any...surprises. Lover of combat that I am, peace is always preferrable to violence." That said, Keitaro lapsed again into silence, as he walked serenely at the rear of the party. Indeed, it was typical of Keitaro to speak suddenly, as if he had only just become aware of a conversation, then immediately revert to his previously "unaware" state.

What order are we walking in? I have Keitaro at the back... I'm guessing Althea would want to be somewhere in the middle, Kyaka woudl have to be somewhere in the middle as well (just because he hasn't made a post yet), and that would put Gwaerandir in the front by process of elimination alone. And since Althea has to be near Gwaerandir to be talking to him on one side and near Keitaro to be talking to him on the other, that's not possible. So I guess we'll put Kyaka in the front, then Gwaerandir, then Althea, and then Keitaro at the back where he's already said he is. And Brenna hasn't joined the party yet.
Yeah... that works. Sorry, I just had to make sure I had the visual down. mrgreen We can now return to the regularly scheduled program
Althea nodded at Keitaro in agreement. "Indeed. My religion teaches such a philosophy."
Not really finding that there was much more to say, but preferring a human voice to the unnerving voice of silence, she started back to humming the same happy tune from before. It was a peaceful hymn, meant to keep away negativity. Of course, it was more superstition than actual magic.

Kyaka yawned boredly, stretching his arms towards the sky. He kept his eyes forward, not caring to interact with those behind him. He was pondering what the chest could hold and whether it was worth the trouble to fetch it. He shrugged, glancing back behind him through the gap in his wings to see the small group. He sighed. Not much in the way of compainons as far as he was concerned, but who knew?

It happens that the road you guys are taking to get to Thurmaster passes through another town called Milborne. After a few days of travelling, you are mere hours from Milborne, walking on a path that runs very close to the Lyrchwood Forest. Ahead of you, there are three of what appear to be farm laborerers heading toward you at a steady, weary pace. It seems they've just finished a long day of work in the city and are walking home, tools still in hand.
Suddenly, as the three farmers are about to pass you on the trail, two arrows, followed quickly by another two, shoot out of the forest and fall on the trail among you.
"Bandits!" The farmers cry out in suprise, and hurry forward to close ranks with you against your enemies in the forest.
