Consciousness
At first, there was nothing, an eternity drifting in the void, unaware. Then there was the warmth, packed in close about one's body, comforting and comfortable, and the awareness that this was so. One was content to remain so for a time.
Gradually, one began to wonder at things, questioning that which was.
Where am I?
Who am I?
WHAT am I?
The questions echoed in one's mind, disappearing into the nothingness and comfort and warmth, but they kept reforming, and with them, came the concept of self.
I am. But what?
...Dreahni.
One knew not where the word, a name, had come from, but one knew that it was intrinsically one's own. With this knowledge came a tightness, as if the warmth and comfort where suddenly too small. One, Dreahni, shoved and thrashed with muscles she hadn't known she had, but the warmth and the comfort were too strong for her. After a time, she stopped the thrashing, and settled down to conserve her strength.
There would come a time when the warmth and the comfort would grow weak, and she strong, and then Dreahni would break free of the tight, dark nothingness....
