I was just playing FFVII through again to get the stuff I missed, and I found myself wondering... Does Red XIII's real name (Nanaki) have a meaning in Japanese? like Naraku from Inuyasha's name means either "Abyssmal Hell" or "Theater Basement"... or whether it's just a name. If anyone out there happens to know, please tell me lol

I've heard that it's believed it's in honor of...Star Wars. Yes, Star Wars. When you switch the letters around in Nanaki's name, you get the name Anakin. As far as I know, that's sadly the deepest it gets. I know, I was hoping it meant "great warrior" or something like that *sigh*

Yes, well, I've also tried looking it up on name sites. According to them, the name, "Nanaki" does not exist in any culture. Of course, you probably don't believe them, either.

Thanks for all of your Oh so insightful ideas. blaugh
But I just found out from a good friend of mine that "Nanaki" is a Sound Effect which means "Neigh of horse" ( rofl ). Like we have "Ka-pow" and the like. blaugh
However, I suspect that wasn't what they had in mind when they named him wink

As Psyrinn said, it was an anagram of Anakin's name. Was one of many Star Wars references made throughout the series. Biggs and Wedge are another popular one.

Yeah, Square made other references to Star Wars, too. I just can't remember which ones.

Anagram for Anakin aye? Hmm... Like Psirynn said, Hoped it meant something cooler... Man, why couldn't Sephiroth be named after Anakin? Then he could go up to Cloud and be all "Cloud... I am your father..." rolleyes wink
