I don't know if/how this is possible, but twice now I've gotten my virus software popping up telling me it's found and cleaned a trojan while I was on Gaia (in a poll guild, voting on polls.) The first time I figured it might have been one of the cinderella story soundtrack sites I had been trying earlier in the day, but I've since then cleared cache and cookies in every browser and run virus scans and spyware checks. It happened again just now in mozilla, and the ONLY place I've been in mozilla is here on Gaia. It said it was trying to open a exp.wmf file, which we're wondering if it was posted somewhere in one of the polling threads or something. Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen to any of you all, and it would suck if it's possible to spread trojan viruses just from content in threads!!

grrrrr... IE crashed on me, losing the message that I was ready to post!! So, abbreviated:

YES, this is a real issue. It comes from the animated (Flash) banner ads on Gaia and on Neo. There's a security hole in Flash that the evil hackers can exploit. Macromedia has patched with newer versions of the player.

Suggestion 1: Get the newest version of Flash from Macromedia. Get it for each browser you use (there are different downloads depending on your browser).

Suggestion 2: Keep your antivirus and antispyware updated and use it (yes, I realize you all know this. It still bears repeating)

Suggestion 3: Do NOT download anything you are not CERTAIN you need or you are not Positive is a valid file! There's one ad in particular (the "deck out your deck" ad) that keeps prompting me to download a macromedia file and will not accept "no" to any of the popups it generates until I close all instances of the browser with the task manager. My antivirus has identified this particular example as "Exploit.wmf". Be careful and don't fall for the scare-tactics some of these people/viruses use to get their nastiness installed on your computer.

i need to update my flash player, i'm usually hesitant to do it though, because the site often doesn't respond and ends up freezing my screen and causing me annoyances mad

Wow, thanks for the info. I am still upset with my IE. For some reason it won't let me do what I want to do. I can't get it to sign on to VMK for nothing. I've updated everything I can think to update, and it still won't work right. So I've been using Mozilla for just about everything these days. It's also the reason why nobody has seen me on Neo or Yahoo.

I guess I"ll have to work on it today. While I have a chance. There's a test tomorrow so I won't be around much today anyways...

Thanks Blais! I just came here to report that it just happened AGAIN, and this time I was on nothing but Neo, on a non-premium account. So I wasn't sure whether it was Gaia or Neo doing it, so it makes total sense that it's BOTH!!

I've been having these same issues with flash, both on my computer and Jason's! It never gives me problems until I try to go to towns, and then when I have to go get flash again, it totally doesn't work. Jason's fixed it for me both times, but I don't know what he did. I'll have to tell him we need to do it again for the new fix! (he blames the sites I go to.. ie. neo and gaia! he says it never happens to HIM!) rofl Thanks so much again for the info! Now I'm not paranoid because I know what's doing it! 4laugh

Jason got the macromedia shockwave fix, and he says it was one thing for ALL browsers, so I'm set!

5 attempts to post later.... *crosses fingers*.....

Shockwave is one thing, Flash another. Both are (now) Adobe products and are available at adobe.com. It may or may not help with the virus situation, but it's not a bad idea to update. Honestly, I'm not sure it's helped block this problem for me for more than a day, but knowing that a security hole is now patched at least provides some piece of mind, and my antivirus software is catching it sooner/easier now.

This problem is on both Neo and on Gaia; worse on Neo since the ads are much more common. It is the ads that each of these sites display, which I believe, are supplied through a third party company (and probably the same company too for both sites, since the ads themselves seem to be the same!).

A new threat popped up for me today, BTW - a pop-up indicated I've disallowed ActiveX and to please install and run "Fun Lotto" or some such thing... rolleyes Errrm... that's *exactly WHY* activeX is disallowed on my computer!

You're welcome for the info - glad to help (even if it's just to tell you that you're not imagining things! wink ).

UGH! NOT AGAIN!!! I just got it AGAIN, in firefox, this time on Gaia. It's the Deck Out Your Deck ad that's doing it. rolleyes I don't know what to do now. Guess I'm gone for the night.

Memo to self, stopped at poll 19.

I was getting the trojan things all the time, both on gaia and on neo, but my virus scans were saying that there wasnt any viruses on the puter. After it happened twice on gaia within a 10 minute period, I ran the scan again and found 2 trojans logged into my puter. Killed them as well as some PUPs and havent had it happen since **knock on wood**

Yeah same here! The first time it was happening if I ran a virus scan, it wouldn't find anything else. Last night it did though!
