Setting out from the tribe at the break of dawn, two men in their early twenties made their way to the valley in which the hippogriffs resided. One of these two, Blade, looked quite different from the other humans that lived anywhere near these lands.

Terith, the native man who was leading him, had agreed to bring him to see some hippogriffs so that they could learn more about them, despite what the others in the tribe had said. But due to his reputation within the group, Terith had managed to persuade them all that this was going to be alright as long as they took the precautions needed when dealing with the larger creatures.

"Remember Blade, when we find one, approach slowly and make no sudden movements. Keep eye contact, and don't show that you're nervous or anything like that."

Those were just a few of the things Terith said to help prepare his outlander-friend.

It wasn't until later in the day that the two humans reached the deeper parts of the forest that housed some of the 'griffs. Here, they became more alert, in hopes to spot on of the hippogriffs somewhere in the region. But they knew it could be awhile before they found anything.

Still, they walked quietly, as any loud noises may startle any creatures within the vicinity.

Zailan made his way with his head down smelling the ground for any small pray to eat. He wasn't exactly hungry, but he didn't feel satisfied. He left Silverwing to tend to the eggs while he hunted for her dinner. Yet he'd have to eat before bringing something back for her. He felt like something bad was going to happen, but didn't think anything of it.

Zailan didn't notice the two humans. He didn't even notice their movements. He really wasn't on alert, but wasn't really thinking the bad happening feeling was going to happen to him. He stopped shot up his head and looked the oppisite way of the humans. He did hear something that time. His ears went back a little and one foot when up in the air. His tail was slightly twitching.

After a few moments he decided it was nothing at all. Just a bird that was trying to spook him. he always did think they were out to get him. He grunted to himself and streatched his front legs out far. Still not seeing the two humans. His ears finally were up again and his head was back down smelling the ground. He found something interesting. A tiny bug. It didn't smell too pretty, but it looked like fun to eat.

He picked up the bug and bit down on it. It didn't takes to good either. He shock his head and tried to get the taste out of his mouth. He stopped completely forgetting about his toung. It hung out ofh is mouth for a while then finally went in. He finally noticed them. Looking at him. His ears went up out of curiousity. He hand't seen one of these funny creatures for a while. Since he was a little kid.

Taking a small step towards the two, he looked at them. His head lowered in a gentle way and his eyes looked kind. He looked relitively calm, but nervious too. His tail twitched out of nerviousness. Should he go closer, or stop. Perhaps run away. He snorted and took another step forword. What harm could they do to him? He was way bigger.

It was Terith who noticed the adult male first. Nudging his friend to get his attention, he carefully motioned over to the large beast that stood some distance away. They were quite lucky to find one out in the open like this, and not have it flee right away.

Leaning over slightly, he whispered, "Looks like a male here. Now remember what I said. Slow and easy ok? These guys can do a heck load of damage if they wanted to."

Nodding, Blade waited for his friend to make the first move. The native man took in a deep breath before casually but slowly walking towards the hippogriff. It seemed that the adult male was a bit wary of them, so he took note of this. As he moved forward, he spoke lowly to hopefully get him to understand that they meant no harm.

"Hey big guy... Don't worry, we're not going to hurt you.."

Watching his friend for a moment, Blade soon followed suit. He made sure that his hands were nowhere near his sword and he also made sure to walk slowly and calmly.

"Do they understand our speech?"

Terith glanced back at the outlander somewhat, then shrugged slightly.

"I believe that they're intelligent enough to at least get what's going on. But I doubt they fully understand what we say."

Zailan snorted as they walked closer. What were they doing. He smelled at the air and walked a little closer to them. He suck his head getting the flies off his ears as they advanced towards him. His tail was now flickering a bit faster. He looked at their feet. Where's their furr and feathers? He did what looked like a shrug.

"What do you want?" Zailan asked. Which really only turned out to be a few churps and snorts. He wasn't sure what to do. Yet, he felt they were calm enough and were trying to hurt him. He didnt' see any fangs on a stick. Just a weird metal thing.

He was more curious about the second one then the first. He's seen a few like him. But nothing like the other. He looked morely strange then the other one. Why didn't he look like the other two-leggers? Then something weird happened. They were trying to say something to him. Or just were making weird noises. His eye's lifted up as to say, 'Excuse me?' He didn't move any closer, but didn't expect the two-leggers to stop walking towards him. He'd let them pet him and be on their way. He thought.

There was someone else in the picture. Someone he hadn't noticed yet. But had a strange smell. Not like them. Then it came to him. A hunter? Nah. He shook his head again. It could have been. If it was there would be another smell. He nodded at the two again.

Blade paused a bit as the hippogriff chirped and snorted at them. Tilting his head to the side, he wondered if there was any meaning behind these noises. But after a little while, he shook his head to himself and continued to walk a little closer. However, he stopped when he was about five feet away from the beast.

For now, that was close enough for him. And besides, with Terith one or two feet away from him, he didn't want the hippogriff to feel like they were crowding around him so much.

The Native grinned at the adult male, but he made sure to not show his teeth, as he knew the creature might take that as an aggressive gesture. And the last thing he wanted was to have the full-grown 'griff to be offended and possibly attack when he was standing so close to him.

Still being careful to not do anything too sudden, Terith slowly lifted up a hand to maybe pet the adult. He was watching him carefully to see if the 'griff was alright with this before making any actual contact.

"Hey.. are you sure about that?" asked Blade as he knew most wild creatures wouldn't allow some random human to just walk up and pet them.

"Don't worry. Despite what the others say, hippogriffs can be pretty gentle. Just as long as you don't do anything to anger or scare them at least."

From somewhere behind the two, Zailan may have noticed a slight glint of light from within the bushes...

Zailan's left ear went back. He hurt the crack again. It wasn't from infront of him where the two who were trying to pet him. It was someone from behind. An ambush! How was this possible? Now both ears went back. They tricked him. They were trying to distract him to kill him.

With that only on his mind he reared up and started kicking at the two. His eyes were closed for a minute. He didn't want to hurt them, yet he didn't want them to hurt him either. He started to stomp down on one of them. He didn't even notice that he was stomping on him. He heard screams coming from both the two-leggers.

He tried to stop himself, but he was just too scared. He opened his eyes finally to see something very strange. One of them wasn't afraid of him. But why isn't he? He's freaking out and all that one is doing is getting dark in the face and eyes turning weird. Zailan starts to stomp harder on the ground. Chirping mixed with horse sounds he didn't know what to do. His wings were spread wide out just incase of need of a fast exit.

Blade's eyes widened as he saw his friend take several hard blows from the hippogriff. It seemed like something had frightened the beast, but after scanning the area quickly, he saw nothing that could have done that.

"AAHH!!"

Falling to the ground, Terith went fairly limp as he continued to take a few more blows from the hooves of the larger creature.

Knowing that he needed to get the griff away from the Native, Blade drew out his sword and charged forward. Swinging his weapon at the adult male, he summoned a fireball in his free hand. Soon after slashing the sword, he shot out the flames at creature.

"Get back you monster!!"

Zailan's eyes got wide. He reared again seeing the fire, also turning so it'd hit his right side of his sholder. It was what made sence to him. It would to the least bit of damage. The fire ball hit him knocking him off his feet.

With a big thunk, Zailan hit the ground with his side. Where the fire ball hit his once lovely feathers, it left them seered and ugly. Now showed bits of burnt skin. You could actually smell the meat that had been burnt. He cried in pain. A horrible sound it was when hippogriffs cried.

He started to struggle to get back up. It hurt him more then ever to try to stand. The fire was still going a bit. He looked towards the fire reall fast and snorted at it. Finally it was totally out. Burt skin and blood mixed with some seered feathers. Finally getting to his feet he reared again. He didn't know if he should take the chance in runing, or try to kill this one too? Fear and hatred was now in his eyes. Wings spread out again. This time ready to take flight if he tried that again.

Glaring at the hippogriff, Blade struck out with his sword once more. He wanted to make sure that the beast wasn't going to attack him as well as he tried to help out his fallen friend.

After he swung the weapon at the larger creature, he looked over his shoulder really quickly to check up on Terith.

The Native man was bleeding from the mouth, and it appeared that he had already lost a lot of blood. Knowing that he didn't have much time left, Blade gritted his teeth, then sheathed his weapon before scooping up the badly wounded man.

Though he shot one last glance at the hippogriff before running off.

"If he dies, rest assured that you will regret it."

Zailan was still rearing when he watched the human leave. He wasn't really afraid of the slash he did. It didn't come that close. He thought it was more of a deffence or to keep him from attacking him. He didn't calm down at all. Setting his feet on the ground he looked around ears back.

What was he going to do? He couldn't go home tonight. Not without indangering his family. He started to gallup away from the seen. He went towards the hills. Perhaps that'll stop his sent. He'd get to the hills and then fly back to the nest when it was more dark out. He didn't know how those two-leggers were so strong. He was so much bigger.

He just raced on. He didn't want to stick around. What if he came back? He did do lots of damage to the other two-legger. He would regret it later. He didn't want to hurt him. He wanted to have a human friend. But not everything worked that way. Faster and faster he ran, into the forest towards the hills.

Blade kept on running back towards the tribe that he had been living with for the past few years. Maybe one of the tribesmen would be able to help Terith live, but he could already feel him losing the battle for his life.

"Come on.. hang in there..."

Time went on, and he realized that no matter how fast he ran, he wouldn't be able to make it to the tribe's village in time. As if one cue, he felt Terith go limp right then. Alarmed by that, he tried to nudge the man back to consciousness, but he was already gone.

Later on, he stepped into the village with his head hung down low. The Natives that were out of their tents stared at him as he made his way to the medicine man, where he laid down the body.

"We warned you that it was a bad idea. And now our chief's son is dead."

All of the villagers nearby seemed to glare at the outlander at the same time. It was as if he was the one at fault for Terith's death, and it was as if he wasn't a friend of his as well.

"Wait. But... it was the hippogriff.."

"But it was you who wanted to see if. If you hadn't urged him to lead you, this wouldn't have happened."

Zailan felt something strange happen. Like he could feel the ending of a life. Was it that of the native? He didn't know. He had finally slown down. He colapsed at the hill trying to catch his breath. They weren't exactly "close" to where he had done his bad deed.

He looked at his right shoulder the best he could do. It was severely burt and smelt bad. He started to lick at his wound. He looked about after getting off most of the burt feathers. It was just now blood and burnt fleash. He got up. It hurt alot more. A burning sensation went up and down his body. He managed to get through it.

Jumping in the air, he started to fly away back to his nest.

THE END!
