I was at the vet yesterday with y dog and as i was waiting i noticed an article on the July edition of Car & Driver (i think) and it was an article on how Pontiac took the GTO to a drifting comp. Apparantly they though they would get alot of applause, however when the car came out, everyone booed them. Also, Dodge is working on getting a Viper out to drift... just thought this was interesting and worth posting

you know, I have mixed feelings about the new generation of GTOs.
I mean the GTO is one of those classic cars so on one hand, it's cool they finally brought it back..on the other hand, it's a bastardized sickly offspring.

Mythic you know, I have mixed feelings about the new generation of GTOs. I mean the GTO is one of those classic cars so on one hand, it's cool they finally brought it back..on the other hand, it's a bastardized sickly offspring. in my opinion they ruined the GTO by bringing it back. it was fine how it was, a classic muscle car. The only thing the new one has goin for it is a low 14 sec quarter mile stock sweatdrop

The new GTO is trash. It doesnt look terrible, but its nowhere near the car it was. And at a drifting competition? Thats not a good idea. Same goes for the Viper. the Viper is too weighty in the front and too powerful in the rear IMO. It wont end up well for the Viper, that would be a tough car to drift.

The GTO and the Viper both appeared at Irrwingdale for the D1. The driver of the Viper drives it in the JGTC I think.
Not 100% sure since Im following it all from South Africa.

Hey people! Just thought you'd like a full rundown on the status of Rhyse Millen's GTO and Hubriunette's Mopar Drift Viper.
Rhyse, who is son of the famous Rally driver Rod Millen, is driving the factory GTO and while it did place in the top 16 for Round 1 of the D1 Drift Event at Irwindale, it was quickly smited by one of the Japanese drivers. After that, Rhyse entered the American founded Formula D drift competition circuit where it did relatively better against less experienced American drifters, but unfortunately was no match for the Mopar Viper and Ken Gushi's 240SX.
Hubrinette (I don't know how to really spell his name, so don't quote me) was originally an ice racer in Greenland or Iceland or some scandinavian country thereof. After he heard about drifting, he came over here and got his start at the D1 Round 1 event at Irwindale (the same event where the GTO made its debut). Although Hubrinette was an unknown driving the Supra he bought from Rhyse Millen, he also placed into the top 16. After that event, he was picked up by Mopar to be the factory driver of their drift Viper which recently completed it's dominating sweep in the US Formula D events. Over the year, it participated in and won 1st in all 4 Formula D events and is currently in the top seed from the US for the upcoming Japan vs. US d1 event in December at Irwindale.
Personally, while the cars and drivers are a pretty good repesentation of what the US has to offer to the sport of drifting, the shallowness of the angles for the drifts as well as the overly orthodox line approach show that the US still has a lot to learn from the Japanese in this sport.

YOu can drift as good with any car, it jsut takes time, like a AE86, alot of guys drift with that, but its one of the harder ones belive it or not, and Ive see a viper drift, its pritty damn kool.

One of my favorite drift video's is of these two small compact cars (I think they may be daihatsu's.) anyway these to guys tear it up aroud the track even though the cars have FF setups.

It's a lot easier to drift with high horsepower cars because you just tap the gas and the car swings over at your slightest whim. This thing with hachi's though, is that they teach you how to drift properly, taking turns with your foot all the way down on the pedal and balancing the car around that power band rather than trying to just make the turn with the e-brake. But like you said, it just all comes down to what the driver is looking for and what level he/she's at.

Of course. There was that one guy in Initial D with the K's Silvia. He only ran downhill because he'd get slaughtered on a hillclimb, but yeah, you could make it with an NA silvia 3nodding
