Ok
Lets face it...after finishing up all the DL novels, what do you read next?

I've been thinking long and hard about it and decided this would be a good place to create a thread like this?

What Non-Dragonlance Books would you reccomend to others? Why?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally I would reccomend the 12 book "Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan.

It's a rather detailed world with a lot of political intrigue as well as action. Instead of being a plot-line, it's told as more of an intricate "Tapestry" where all of the events in the series make up the "big picture". For instance, an event in the first book, that only has apparent minor significance to one character, eventually comes back later to bite them all in the a**! Great story, great characters...and the Myrdraal (The eyeless ones) are far creepier than the Nazgul! Same concept, except you can see these things' faces...NO eyes and they are untouched by wind...and pure evil.

(Sorry if this doesn't make much sense. I'm trying to do this really quickly as I have to work today sweatdrop )

I'd recommend any of the Pern series by Anne Mcaffrey. ( http://www.annemccaffrey.net ) There's tons of them. It doesn't matter too much where you start but there are references to events that happened in earlier novels. The references aren't that large though, and it's easy to figure out what she's talking about if you haven't read that novel before.

Her novels also have dragons. However, her dragons are quite different from dragons in other series. They have personalities all their own whee .

There is also a prequel novel of sorts that tells the story of the first people on Pern and how the dragons came about. ^.^

She writes other series that aren't Pern-related but I think her Pern novels are more popular.

There's my two cents so far! xd

Fortunately I know exactly what you are trying to say as I've read ALL of those books, and I too love them.

I would suggest to you to find Anne McCaffery's "The Crystal Singer" Trillogy. I'll be starting on them after my mom finishes with them and I finish teh books I need to read.

Other books I'd recomend to people around here are...

Terry Goodkind's "The Sword Of Truth" series. There are some FUN things in those books and some interesting takes on magic and things we see in Dragonlance that we really don't think about. Somewhat political satire if you tend to pick up on things like that, but not too preachy. I recomend at least reading Wizard's First Rule and if you think you like it going on from there. There will be 11 books in the series and one short story.
Lets just say I didn't like it at first. I got like four pages in and threw it across the room, but the friend who loaned it to me told me "READ IT! At least through the first chapter." I never remember the end of the first chapter... but I do remember giving her the book and DEMANDING the second book. SHe laughed and handed it over with a smugh "told you so" look.

Also try... Oh... someoe Lian's "Tales of the Otori" series (there are only three). They are set in an alternate univers Japan. Not so much "fantasy" as very full of conspericys and intrigue.

I agree with the Sword Of truth series. The first four books are good (it goes downhill from there).

Weis & Hickman's "Deathgate" novel series is 7 books long and very good.

But my suggestion is stick with TSR. I've read every Birthright novel, every Dark Sun novel, every Spelljammer novel, almost every Ravenloft novel, several greyhawk novels and over 60 Forgotten Realms novels.

Dark Sun has great books.
Birthright has only a few, but I loved them.
Ravenloft is 50/50. But Knight of the Black Rose is a Lord Soth novel.
Spelljammer starts strong but ends weak (only 6 novels)
Greyhawk and FR both have good novels. I suggest reading the Drizzt novels (The Dark Elf series). They are wonderfull.

There is a series I've been looking for for 5 years and I just found out the name of the series today. Joel Rosenberg's, "Guardians Of The Flame" is an amazing series. I read the first three years ago, and am picking up the whole series as soon as I get back to the States.

Have you read Chainfire yet in the Sword of Truth books? It seriously picks up and goes back to the same feeling of the first four books, and is ALMOST as good as the first book, IMO. Though its first of a "trillogy" that will end the series with a grand total of eleven books.

I don't think so. I read the 5th and 6th, but I can't remember their names.

That was one of other series that I just couldn't remember the name of. Hehe. I enjoyed that one as well. ^.^ I think there's also a "Doona" series. I personally have only read 2 "Doona" novels sweatdrop .

*realizes she is waaaayyyyy too tired to post coherently... G'night!*

Dragonvarld Trilogy by Weis is really good. Dragons have agreed to leave the humans alone, but one dragon breaks that rule and is ruling a human kingdom of Seth, where the women have dragon magic strong in her blood. The dragons decide to do something about this situation. I can't really say more without giving away the first major plot point! The books span 17 years, and they are really good! Weis has pulled through. Mistress, Son and Master of Dragons are the titles.

Weis is a really good author. ^.^

There's a series of books by Robert Aspirin (I can't quite remember how to spell it sweatdrop ). They're a sort of satirical farce of fantasy novels/myths/fairy tales. ((I think there is one novel called "Myth-Conceptions")).

I'll post the titles I have (and have read) as soon as I get back on again.

*Dashes off for a bit*

Mary Stewart's Merlin novels are literary masterpieces.

The Crystal Cave is the first book in the series.

The book is always so much better!

Forgotten Realms and Wot has been mentioned... can't go wrong with a classic, LotR (books are way better) Mercades Lackey and James Mallory have some, the Obsidian Trilogy. I like them, personally.

Ah, I was right! The series I was thinking of is called "Myth"

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/a/robert-asprin/

^Wow, there's a lot more in this series than I first thought... Of course I buy most of my novels at second hand shops, hospital fundraising book sales, and garage sales, hehe.

For a non-fantasy/sci-fi type of novel, I'd recommend The Great Gatsby, The Birds (by Daphne du Maurier, the ending is different than the movie "The Birds".), and A Christmas Carol.

Ooh! I have Children of Dune 3nodding I haven't begun to read it yet though. sweatdrop . I'm debating about starting it.. I think I might want to start at the beginning of the series. ^.^
