On the mansion grounds there is a field that blooms in the spring and summer, and sometimes Nina can be found there, especially when she's deep in personal thought.

Today is one of those days. She has happy visions and dark dreams dancing in her head. She walks alone in the waist-high flowers and grass.

There is a lone tree in the center of the field, and nick is doing chinups, alternating left hand only, both hands, right hand only, both hands, and so on. He pauses as he sees nina walking along the field, he thinks for a moment, and lets go with one hand to set himself into a spin, before letting go altogether and landing on his feet.

His sudden landing startles her. She jumps just a bit, twirling a flower in her hand. ... She tilts her head to the side for a moment, like she barely recognizes him.

"Nick..." she says, and then smiles sincerely. "It's been a while." She lowers her arm, the flower twisting, a few petals still clinging to the bloom.

He smiles, nods and takes a few steps twords her. Ten feet of flowers stand between them. He pauses for a moment to look her up and down, not really in a sexual way, just trying to see if anythings changed. "You look well."

She's another year older, but she doesn't look much different. There is a ring on her finger. "Yeah? You do too. You look..." She turns her head to the side, and takes a step forward, closing the gap. Flowers rustle up against her skirts. "You look younger." She covers her mouth, her eyes taking in the whole of him. "A lot younger."

She folds her arms in a relaxed pose. "Things always go to hell when you leave, Nick. You're like Crosshaven's good luck charm."

He smiles and takes a step forward as well, fresh sweat glistening on his brow, he appears to have been working out here for a while. "You look as radiant as ever."

She blushes and grins. "Radiant? I can't remember you ever saying that before. You've always been so...polite to me." She turns the daisy in her hands, hiding the red glow on her cheeks. Words catch in her throat. What does she say to him now, after so long? Is there anything to say? Does she tell him about Ed, or....

"Will you walk with me for a while, Nick? It's been a long time since we've talked. I was a little girl, a young teenager then. I'm not anymore."

She swallows, and diverts the subject without much of a pause. "So I admire how much you've helped my brother. Nate was completely lost when he came into power. I think you've helped to keep him sane. He surprises me, you know. I never thought he would be decent at this job, but he is...

Thank you for all the help you give him."

He nods and begins to walk along side her, his outspread hand being tickled by the tops of the flowers.

"I've always thought of nate as a kind of family member, not really sure if hes a brother, or a son, or maybe a father... i've always felt close to all of you, you and nate...and nicholi."

His smile tweaks sadly for a moment, but another moment later he's just as happy as before.

She smiles a little. "Nate's like that. One minute he's the strongest person in the room, the next minute he's looking up at you with child's eyes and asking for your guidance. He thinks of you as family as well, Nick. We all do."

She smiles at the mention of her father's name. It's the first time that she's heard it and just smiled. She doesn't flinch, or frown, or anything. "Yeah, I wish he was still here. He loved you. Sometimes I think he loved you more than he loved Nate. Not that we competed for his affection..." Of course, they did compete.

"You're a part of our family, Nick. You know, before Nicholi died, he had plans to do a lot of things...

He never mentioned it, but he wanted to offer to adopt you, formally, into the family. He wanted to make you one of his heirs. If he'd just lived a few months more, it might have happened. He trusted you absolutely."

He smiles at the thought, but seems a little uncomfortable with the subject, so he changes it. He gives her a kind fo sidelong glance, before noding to the ring on her hand.

"Who's the lucky gent?"

She glances down at the ring, and turns it slowly so that it catches the light and sparkles. She blushes, deeply, and for a long moment doesn't look like she knows what to say. "His name's Ed. He's a real nice guy, and he's come through for me, even if he does spend a good quantity of his time at Barraster's bar." She sweeps a hand through her hair. "We're just dating, but it could be serious. A girl's got to settle down sometime. I'm pushing thirty, you know."

She bites her lip, like she really wants to say something, but doesn't. So, do you still live in that lovely farmhouse?
PostPosted: Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:37 am

He nods "Yeah, im still living there, but im really considering selling it. Im not how i once was, I cant take care of a farm forever."

She imagines that old farm starting to fall into disrepair, the grass growing up too tall, the house slanting in its foundation. "Nick, it's your home. You've lived there forever." She looks shocked. "You aren't so old you can't take care of it... or is there something else? You're not sick are you?"

She hates the thought of him being alone. Being alone anywhere, on the farm or in the city. He shouldn't be alone.

He smiles at her, a smile that stretches across his face. "No, im not sick, its somthin else. Maybe ill show you sometime." He coughs into his hand, and wipes it onto his pantleg, and slows his walking pace a little.

She pulls out a white handkerchief and uses it to wipe off his lips. It's such a dainty touch, but she has the clinical and steady hand of a doctor. "Tell me, I want to know. If you're not all right, if something's going on. I won't judge you, I just want to know. I want you to have someone that you trust. Someone other than Nate. Tell me." Her eyes are wide with concern.
