Yet Another School Year September 2nd Curly, long, and thick, her black hair bounced buoyantly as she stepped off the scarlet train. Her emerald green eyes scoured the platform she stood on. She was looking for her friends. Straight ahead of her, a blonde student walked confidently towards the horseless carriages. The sixteen-year-old witch took a step forward to find herself weighted down. She looked down to find a short boy clinging to her elbow. His black hair was the same colour as hers and it was trimmed neatly in a mushroom cut. His brown eyes skittered around nervously, making sure no one wanted to do him harm.
"Joseph!" She rolled her eyes as she snapped at her younger brother. "Let go of me! And go find your friends!" Mum had made her sit with Joseph on the train, but surely now he could leave her alone.
"But Selena!" He protested, looking up at his sister. "Someone could sneak up on me! I could get hurt on my own! Come with me! Please?" Joseph begged.
"Alright! But promise me you'll leave me alone after!" She asked of him, rolling her eyes again. He was such a pessimist.
"Okay!" He replied in a whiny voice.
"We better hurry up or we may miss the carriages." Selena pulled Joseph after her, looking for his friends, the other third-year Hufflepuffs.
She quickly found his friends, and went back to her own. She found Abby and Khristine, two blonde Slytherins, waiting for her by a carriage.
"I'm sorry, Joseph wouldn't leave me alone!" Selena explained.
The others exchanged glances.
Abby replied first, "He must be getting really annoying."
"Yeah," Khristine agreed. "But we should get in the carriage now." Khristine stepped up and moved over to the far side. Abby got in next, followed by Selena. They were ready to go when a boy appeared next to the carriage.
"Do you mind if I share this carriage with you?" He asked. His straight, brown hair waved loosely in the cool, evening breeze. "I noticed you still had room over here."
Selena slid over, closer to Abby, making room for the boy. "Sure." She smiled and watched as he got in the carriage. No later than 30 seconds after he got in, the carriage began moving. It followed the others, heading to Hogwarts.
The boy turned and looked at Selena through olive green eyes, catching her eye. "I'm Skyler." He extended a bony hand and Selena shook it.
"I'm Selena, and this is Abby, and Khristine." Selena introduced them all and Skyler shook each of their hands. He wore the robes of a Ravenclaw, but he didn't seem to mind that the three girls were Slytherins. But, neither did Selena, so she pushed the thought away.
The group began arguing over favourite/least favourite teachers and wondering what the year would hold in store for them. They all laughed hard and upon reaching the castle, waved good-bye to Skyler and went their separate ways to their own tables.
Selena looked up at the teachers' table, waiting for Dumbledore to announce for the first years to enter. She watched as Professor McGonagall entered and whispered something into Professor Dumbledore's ear, turning and leaving again. Moments later, the first years entered the room and Selena watched as they walked carefully to the front of the Hall.
The students were sorted into their appropriate houses to a loud applause from each one. This year, Slytherin had accepted five new students, two of which were female. The house seemed to be mostly guys, now a days, Selena noticed with a sigh.
Selena didn't listen to Dumbledores' start-of-the-year speech, but when he clapped his hands, she knew he was done. Food appeared in front of them and she dug in hungrily as her friends did.

September 3rd Selena stood at the door of the Transfiguration classroom. She had awoken early and had left Abby and Khristine in the dormitories. Selena was considered odd by most Slytherins, but she didn't see anything wrong with wanting to learn. If you wanted to achieve your dreams, you needed to learn. That's how Selena justified it. She used her learning for personal gain. That's why she was a Slytherin. She refused to believe that she was there because she was evil, like some other people. Like that Malfoy kid in Joseph's year. He was always ready to pick on some younger kid. She hated people like that.
Caught up in thought, Selena was surprised when someone behind her whispered a kind hello. She turned around, dropping the parchment she had been trying to stuff in her bag. She leaned down, not even seeing who it was that had greeted her. The unknown figure helped pick up loose parchment. Selena finally looked up when they had all her parchment picked up. She was even more surprised to see that it was Skyler, the boy they had shared their carriage with the day before.
"Oh, hi!" She greeted him casually, putting the parchment in her bag, making sure not to drop any.
Skyler laughed, it was more like a warm chuckle. "You're early," He reported. "Class doesn't start for another ten minutes."
"I know," Selena blushed a bit. Her gaze was drawn to his silver, shining Head Boy's badge, but she looked back up at his face, smiling. "But you are too."
"Well, yeah. I woke up early this morning." He gave a casual shrug.
Selena laughed. "Same here."
At that moment, Khristine and Abby came running down the hall towards the two. "Selena!" They called in unison. They stopped just in front of the studious Slytherin, catching their breath. "You just disappeared on us! We wondered where you went!" The two seemed to say everything at the same speed, it was as if they were twins. And it was possible, they would look identical if they had the same colour of eyes.
"Uh, I'm going to go get something to eat quickly before class. See you around." He strode down the hall, waving good-bye, more to Selena than the two twins.
"Alright." Selena watched him go, feeling slightly annoyed at Abby and Khristine. She had wanted to talk to Skyler, he seemed like an interesting person, opinionated and intelligent. He seemed interested.
"So why were you here so early?" Abby asked, cocking her head to the side, and interrupting Selena's train of thought.
"Oh .. I just wanted to .. get here early." Selena replied. She didn't know why exactly she had been here early. She changed the subject quickly. "Did you guys see the timetable?" All three girls had chosen the same classes. Abby and Khristine had chosen the classes she had, no idea what they were getting into. She was headed to be an Auror, of course. It seemed the only worthwhile job available to her.
"Oh, yeah!" Khristine exclaimed, pulling her timetable out of her pocket. She had a bad habit of using her pockets and arms to carry things instead of using a backpack or bag. "Today we have Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts and two free periods! We have an awesome day!"
"Yeah, I know." Selena nodded. "Two free periods on the first day!"
By now, students were beginning to arrive. The bell would ring in a few minutes and the halls were getting more and more crowded.
The bell rang. BRING. The students made their way into the classroom, taking their seats at the appropriate desks. Professor McGonagall entered the room and the class began.

September 9th In a red armchair by the fire, he sat. His head sank down and rested on his chest, which was rising and falling steadily. A piece of parchment slipped off his lap and a green quill was held tightly in his hand. His black hair hung down loosely over his face.
Another boy sat on a chair opposite him and the other boy was in the same position. He had brown hair and his quill was white, as opposed to the first boy's black one. The both slept on their armchairs, the sky outside dark, lit only by the shining moon.
A third boy walked over to the two others. He laughed, then clapped each of them on the shoulder. He woke the black-haired boy first, who sat up with a gasp. The other boy just blinked a few times and looked around.
"You guys fell asleep!" The third boy laughed again. He had black hair aswell, but his was shorter than the one boy's. "And Joseph, you spilled your ink again! He pointed to the ink stain on the floor and the shattered ink bottle at the black-haired boy's feet.
"Oh no, I?ll be in so much trouble .." The boy named Joseph clapped a hand to his forehead, and ended up poking himself with the tip of his quill. "OW!" He exclaimed, pulling the quill away from his head and glaring at it, as if it were the quill's fault he had just poked himself.
The third boy laughed. "Another stain. You know it?s really easy for the teachers to clean that up."
"I know.. But I'm still gonna be in trouble, Brandon! And what about my homework?" Joseph whined.
"Ayrie'll help you with it in the morning, you know that." The boy who had been addressed as Brandon rounded on the brunette boy who had said nothing since he?d awoken. "Why are you so quiet, Jack?" He asked.
"Erm.. I'm just.. s-s-s-o-o-o tired!" He replied with a yawn.
"You guys should get to bed then!"
"Good idea." Joseph stood up and threw his parchment and quill into his bag. He swept his wand and the glass from his ink bottle disappeared. "Come on.." He turned and headed upstairs to the boys' dormitory.

September 10th The chilly September breeze blew across the grounds, rippling the grass pleasantly. A few odd students sat, letting the breeze blow over them as they finished homework or skipped rocks across the lake. Nothing unusual. But four students walked across the grounds towards the Quidditch pitch. Three boys were wearing a yellow badge with a badger on it and a girl had a blue badge with a raven centred on it. One of the guys carried a single-shouldered bag in one hand, struggling to keep from dropping it as the girl watched nervously.
"Oh, let me help, Joseph." She rolled her eyes and stopped to reach over and help the Hufflepuff boy hoist the bag onto his shoulder. "You know, it would have been smarter to do up the flaps before trying to carry this bag all the way to the Quidditch pitch."
"Tut tut, Joseph!" The tallest boy replied sternly. "Listen to Ayrie, now!" He laughed softly, but at a reproachful look from the girl he had noted as Ayrie, he shut up quickly.
The black-haired boy that had been carrying the bag blushed a bright red colour. "I, er .. I just .. I mean, I didn't - I'll remember that." He stuttered as he leaned down to do up the clips that held his bag closed.
"Why'd you bring that anyway?" Ayrie asked, watching Joseph curiously. "We're only going to watch the Quidditch practice."
"I .. I needed help with my homework." Joseph determinedly kept his gaze away from Ayrie and instead studied his shoes.
"Oh, sure, I'll help!" She said, as the group began moving again.
"Really?" Joseph looked up at her again, a smile slowly spreading across his face.
"Of course! What is it you need help with?"
"Just .. This stupid Potions essay .. I can?t remember what's used in a Babbling Beverage .." Joseph responded quietly, but atleast he looked directly at Ayrie.
"Oh, I'll help with that once we get to the Quidditch pitch." She nodded and continued on.
The four made their way to the Quidditch pitch in silence, and when they arrived, the Slytherin Quidditch team had just gotten onto the pitch to start practice. Joseph, Ayrie, Brandon and Jack all took a spot in the stands, watching and Joseph dug out his messy Potions essay. It was scratched out in numerous places and there was an ink blotch in one corner. Ayrie took it from him and read it over.
"Oh, Joseph! You've got it all wrong!" Ayrie rolled up his piece of parchment and grabbed one from Joseph's bag. "I'll just write it out in rough for you, so you can re-write it in your own words later. Sound good?"
But before Joseph could answer, Brandon burst out, "Hey! That's not fair! You can?t just do it for him!"
"I'm not, Brandon, I'm writing it out in point form. He has to put it into full sentences." Ayrie shrugged, and returned to her fervent writing.
Then a whistle blew and all four looked up, almost having forgotten about the Quidditch practice in front of them. The entire Slytherin Quidditch team was hovering in a large circle and the team captain, Selena was holding the quaffle and Montague watched her with a lopsided grin on his face and the whistle sticking out of his mouth.
"Clarth, you need to catch the quaffle when it's first thrown, not after a long dive." He scoffed and a few other team members did aswell, including Draco Malfoy, who had only last year become the team's seeker.
"I can't if you throw it five metres from where I am." Selena responded through gritted teeth.
"You've got a good broom, go after it next time." Montague was obviously enjoying himself, he was smirking happily.
"Fine." Selena whipped the quaffle back at him and he barely caught it at his chest after a few fumbles. Montague glared at her, then looked around at the rest of the team.
"Let's just practice." He grumbled, flying down and releasing one bludger and the snitch. He grabbed his beater's bat and so did Warrington, the other beater. Montague threw the quaffle to the team's keeper, Nott.
The team began practising.
"Montague really hates your sister, doesn?t he?" The second black-haired boy who had been silent until now spoke up.
Joseph looked round at him. "Yeah, he does. I don't know why Selena even puts up with it .. She just really likes Quidditch."
"You'd have to to put up with that snap-case." Brandon nodded, watching the progress of the quaffle as it flew threw the air.
"I guess so .." Joseph replied and the four were quiet until Ayrie spoke up and gave Joseph his essay back so he could re-write it.
When practice was over, they returned to the castle to work on more homework and Ayrie, of course, being done it all, retired to her dormitory to hang with the other third-year Ravenclaws.

September 20th (A) Selena sat on the grass in the grounds, reading through her defence against the dark arts book. She was almost done it, about three chapters to go.
A group of Slytherins was walking along the grounds towards her. They stopped and she looked up at them. "Yes?" She asked, setting her book down after carefully folding back the corner of the page she wanted to save.
The person in front, Slytherin's Quidditch captain, Montague, smirked and said. "Clarth, you're off the team. We've voted. You suck and completely disgrace Slytherins."
Selena stood up in a flash. "That's not fair! You can't just kick me off the team!"
"Yeah, I can. I'm captain, remember?" He replied.
"Has professor Snape agreed with this?" She asked, knowing Snape got final say in this matter.
Montague grimaced. "Surely he'd agree with us."
"Right, he wants to win the Quidditch cup and you know it! If you kick me off the team, it's not fair! We lose our chance!"
"You saying you're the best person on the team?" Theodore Nott, the team's keeper, had stepped forward and was glaring at Selena.
"I didn't say that!"
"You implied it!" Nott growled, pulling out his wand. Montague caught his motion, and pulled out his own aswell.
Selena stepped back and pulled out her own wand, biting her lip. She couldn't take the whole Slytherin Quidditch team by herself. She scanned the grounds looking for a teacher, for someone who could help. She caught sight of Skyler, who, as she had been minutes earlier, reading. At that moment, he looked up and caught her eyes, looking worried when the situation registered in his mind. Skyler quickly stood up and strode quickly over to the group, holding out his own wand in one hand and his book in the other.
"Montague, leave her alone. Don't make me dock points from Slytherin." He warned menacingly.
"Right, just try and I'll curse you into next week!"
"Fine, ten points from Slytherin for each drawn wand .. that'd be, what, 30 points?" Skyler finished off, pointing at Montague's, Nott's, and Malfoy's drawn wands.
Montague turned quickly to Skyler and flashed his wand at him. Skyler's hands went quickly to his face, which had just begun to have bats flying all over it.
Selena pointed her wand at Montague. "You a*****e!" She shouted. "Petrificus totalus!" She waved her wand and caused Montague to fall to the ground, stiff as a board. Malfoy and Nott turned to look at her, but before they could do anything, Selena had caught Malfoy's hair on fire and made Nott's legs do a small jig due to her Tarantallegra spell.
Skyler seemed to have gotten rid of the Bat Bogey hex that had been put on him because he turned back to Selena and the group. He didn't say anything for a moment, but looked at the various Quidditch team members, dancing, holding their hair, or laying on the ground. The others seemed to have left in the commotion. He waved his wand at Nott and Montague. Montague stood up and left with a last glare at Selena and Skyler; Nott's legs stopped dancing and he followed Montague, Draco followed the other two as a House Elf would follow its master.
Skyler smiled at Selena. "Nice work there."
"Yeah .." Selena blushed a bit. "It was nothing. Thanks for the help. I owe you."
"No, you don't owe me. What was that about anyway?"
"Montague wanted to kick me off the Quidditch team." Selena replied quietly.
"He can't do that without a teacher's permission or agreeance." Skyler replied knowingly.
"How do you know?" She asked.
"I guess I haven't told you .. I'm the captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team." He answered casually.
"So, he has to go to Snape if he wants me off, then? Well, that's good I guess .."
"Yeah, should be. You seem a good enough player that he'd keep you for winning's sake."
"I hope so." Selena shrugged and sat down with a sigh, running her hands through her hair agitatedly.
Skyler looked down at the distressed Slytherin girl. "What's wrong?" He asked, not really seeing how possibly being kicked off the Quidditch team was that big a problem.
Selena looked up at him. "It's nothing, don't worry about it."
"Okay, if you say so." Skyler shrugged and sat down beside her. He stretched out his arms above his head, then returned them to his side.
A long silence followed that in which Selena watched the lake oddly and Skyler watched Selena. Selena finally broke it by standing up and saying, "Well, I'm going back to the common room .. See you around."
As she left, Skyler was sure he saw a single tear glistening on her cheek.
September 20th (B) Selena stormed into the Slytherin common room to find Khristine and Abby each sitting on an armchair by the fire, working on their homework. "What have you guys been doing?!" She yelled, standing between them and sending each of them filthy glares back and forth.
Khristine looked taken aback but Abby just looked worried.
"What are you yelling at us for?" Khristine asked, and Abby said, "Just finishing homework .."
"Where were you when Montague and the rest of our Quidditch team decided to kick me off?" Selena glowered at the two.
"Oh, what? He did what? He can't kick you off! I mean, it wouldn?t be fair! And he just can't! We have a game in two weeks against Gryffindor!" Abby replied indignantly.
"Yeah, well, he tried, but I just went to Professor Snape, and he said I could stay on the team."
"That's a relief! ..Right?" Khristine added when she saw Selena was still fuming.
"No, it's not! You know the torments I'll go through now at practice?"
Neither of the two girls replied. They knew to just let her vent.
"Montague will give me constant crap about how I don't deserve to stay and how I'm only on the team because I'm a teacher's pet which is not true! It's so not true!" Selena took a deep breath, she was now pacing back and forth. "And if I screw up at a game, I'm gone! Professor Snape said so himself! I can't stand the tension! I don't know what I'd do without Quidditch! It's my life! Argh!" Selena slumped down in a chair and put her face in her hands.
Abby looked over at her, but kept quiet. Eager for a change of subject, Khristine asked, "Have you heard any more about your mum?" She realised it was a bad question when Selena shot her a glare from between her fingers.
Selena took her hands away and replied quietly. "Yeah, she's not doing well. Not at all. They're afraid of what may happen if her condition doesn't get any better." She glared at Khristine as though daring her to bring up the topic again.
The other kept quiet again, and Selena couldn't stand it. "Whatever!" She stood up and left the common room again, wondering what she'd do. It wasn't even noon yet .. Today would be a terrible day.
