The Premise
Project Aquarion is the latest effort by Tokyo R&D to develop new tools for the Gaia National Guard's efforts to protect the world from the various dangers that constantly threaten it. This time, the effort focuses on the abnormal threats that Gaia faces often: the magical and the mystical, the psychic and the just plain fantastic.

Project Aquarion is the brainchild of Doctor Shun Akimoto, Head Researcher of Project Aquarion. This eccentric man discovered a crystal with the ability to focus and alter Chi energy, and found that it could be used in complex circuitry. With his past experience in MMI's (Man Machine Interfaces), the wealth of brainwave data gathered from the game Angelic Layer, and his experiences in what most would call the mystical martial arts, Doctor Shun Akimoto began designing the one mecha unit the GNG was still lacking.

The Vectors
For reasons of his own, Doctor Shun Akimoto chose to name the three fightercraft-types the Vectors. These are huge fightercraft, sheathed thickly with extraordinarily durable armor. The armor is so durable that should the Vector crashland, the hull will not be deformed: the pilot and the electronics are more likely to suffer damage in that event. This armor is necessary to provide protection for the sheer complexity of the myriad transformations Aquarion can perform. Maneuverability however is hampered greatly by the weight of this armor, and the less than perfectly aerodynamic requirements for the armor. The three Vector models (Luna, Sol, and Mars) are equipped with internally mounted twin GU-11s which flank the sides of the cockpit. On Luna and Mars, they are mounted within the 'catamaran-inspired' pontoons. On Sol, on either side of the nose. Despite the radical hull design differences, the Vectors share the same statistics...the Vectors are not better than each other in any role.

Aquarion
The Vectors seem unequipped for the role of primary mecha to mecha combat because that is not their primary function. Their primary function is to join together to form Aquarion, the giant mecha designed to counter abnormal phenomenon attacks. When the three pilots join their Vectors together, they are not just uniting the mecha, they are uniting their souls. As can be expected, soul unification is extremely difficult to accomplish and maintain, and no unification has been successful thus far. However, according to Dr. Akimoto, once the souls are joined, they 'awaken' Aquarion and its ability to counter abnormal phenomena.

Each pilot in the unified souls brings different possibilities to Aquarion's arsenal, and these possibilities are determined by their talents, abilities, and emotional state. To produce a flaming sword, for example, it is thought that you might need a hot-tempered pilot matched with a pilot naturally skilled in fencing. Pilots are usually also attuned to one of the seven major Chakra more than the others, and this can result in some interesting powers within Aquarion as well.

Project Aquarion
Project Aquarion has finished the all-important test flights of the Vectors. While the Vector test pilots have not yet been able to successfully form Aquarion, the success of the Vectors has shifted the project status from fully experimental to Field Testing. For this, Project Aquarion was transferred to ASDF Headquarters. As the entire research facility was contained within a capital ship as per the ASDF commander's usual request, it was a simple matter to fly the Project itself to it's final destination. However, the conversion of non-military R&D staff to ASDF has taken some time, so only Eileen, already a part of the ASDF, has made it over.

Project Aquarion currently has only one each of the Vectors Luna, Sol, and Mars. Due to the nature of the formation of Aquarion, the Vectors are not permanently assigned to any one pilot, instead when on alert the Project Aquarion command staff determines which pilots sortie, and which Vectors they go out in.

How public/secret is this information? You have people that might be searching for your whereabouts very soon. (Though most likely they'll try the ASDF first.) ^^

Should Vector pilots perhaps list a few attributes about themselves as potential combinants for Aquarion abilities? For instance, your example paired a hothead with a fencer to make a flaming sword. Maybe two or three possibilities per pilot?
