We just had a talk in class on weather to legalize Euthanasia. the definintion of Euthanasia is The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. they say it will end suffering. a guy in class said it should be legalized for the mentally ill because they suffer just as much. what do you think?

That's a good point. I think if the person was so mentally ill that they could make no decision on their own, then perhaps putting them out of their misery would be okay. But... I just thought of this. Maybe the person is very happy with how their life is, even if others can't tell... oh what a controversial topic! stressed

Like you said, it is very controversial.

It would end up like that one creepy book, The Giver. Euthanizing people when they got old and s**t. Its all too creepy for me.

Yeah, I read that book in L.A. groups in sixth grade, it was strange. Their society was perfect. No one felt pain, no one got old, no one got sick. They could apply to be "released" (killed by lethal injection) whenever they wanted it. Life must have been so ...empty.

I believe that euthanasia should be legal for humans with terminal illness or extreme injury to the point that they'll never recover and live a high-quality life again.... basically, I want humans given the same options for a dignified death that pets do.
It's ridiculous that my childhood cat, whose muscles wasted away over the course of two weeks, was able to die peacefully, surrounded by family, aged 14 (which is pretty good for a cat) - but, if it was, say, my grandfather, they would have most likely stuck him in a hospital in miserable pain as his very ability to move on his own was stolen from him.
Now, I do live in Oregon, where euthanasia in the case of terminal illness is legal, despite the federal goverment's attempts to meddle. However, it's only available to persons who can make decisions on their own.
I'd like to see it modified a little - when a loved one is taken off of life support, they ought to be able to give an injection to make the process as painless as possible, as opposed to letting the person die 'naturally'. It's an abomination that humans in this situation are treated worse than my cat.
Mental illness - no way. I had a mentally ill kitten whom I couldn't care for due to lack of funds. We had to give him up, and he most likely wound up put down due to people just not wanting to deal with him. sad If I'd had a job at that point, I would have kept him and treated him the best that I could... euthanization of the mentally ill would simply be society's way of saying "I don't want to deal with you because you don't think like you should!"

well think of it this way... using us as an example... being bipolar, we may want to end our 'suffering' and misery one day and go fet it done... but had we waited just a few days, we might have felt fine again... and using the people in the hospitals... psych docs make weird judgements, and i wouldn't want my life in THOSE freaks' hands (assuming i ever get commited, which i doubt).

bah
this is one of those topics taht if i say the wrong thing i come off as the extreme a** that my inner personality is.......
ironically no one knows that exept for scarletrook.....
if i was to lose my arms in a accedent i would want to be eueththh....i cant speel please forgive me.... the reason being i cannot stand the thought of not having my hands to feel things, to hold scarletrooks hand, to play video games, to be able to control my p***s and piss in the toilet like a big boy...........if i was in that position i would much rather be injected with something so that i could let die rather then attempt to get a shot gun and shoot myslef with my toes........
yes it sounds gruesome but android hands are not a reality......
if someone truly wants to die it shouldnt be tooken lightly they should want this for some time and they should be made sure its not depression.....
im probably tireing you all by now so ill shut up.....bah !!!!! now i am teh sad........
*plays runescape trying to cheer up

Oh, I love this topic; Euthanasia! You are given two main rights in life, the way I see it. To live and to die. I think, because you are given the right to die, you should chose how, and when. If you have a terminal disease, where you will eventually be in a vegeative state, you should be allowed to die in a more... let's say, dignified manner. I would want to be euthenised if I had a terminal disease. it gives you a chance to say good-bye to your family and to die in a way YOU see fit.

exactly! we just recently talking about this in school with the whole sheivo thing. my though on the "right to life" should absolutely be balanced by the "right to life". it is our right, i believe, to choose to die if we want. suicide is illegal? wtf!? what does that do? nothing. waste of time and paper. euthenasia is the same... but way less tramatic and probably for better reasons. (sigh) life life life life.... WE LIVE TO DIE AND PEOPLE ARE OBSESSED WITH KEEPING THE DEAD LIVING!!! LET US DIE! but i still say mental patients is extreme. let them kill themselves, but don't so it for them.
