They had tried for months without success. They asked the boss if they could give up. Other souls, that of those assassinated, could be easier to resurrect than a soul that was struck with a fatal disease, even if they were assassinated before it killed them. They tried to explain to the boss that the soul wasn’t complete; it had decayed while Kimimaro was alive; it wasn’t complete like the other ones they brought back from the dead. They told that to the boss, but he merely told them to use one of the ‘stock souls’ they always kept on hand.

This meant paging through a rather large booklet of animals with the boss’s hyperactive teenage daughter. For an entire afternoon. Or at least she found one she liked; as the boss placed her in charge of selecting the animal. The technicians were just there to voice reasons why it could be one or why it couldn’t be another. “I like peacocks. Why not?! D<” “The bird’s bones are hollow, that would be a bad choice for someone who uses his bones as a weapon.” “Might I suggest an elephant or a ram?” “Elephants are ugly! And we don’t want him a ram, I’M a ram!” “A snow leopard, perhaps? Wait, we don’t have that…”

At this point the booklet was promptly thrown at tech 069, hitting him squarely in the face before sliding to the floor. “DON’T RECOMMEND SOMETHING YOU DON’T HAVE!!!” “We recently used the last one in an animal fusion with a bat…” “Perhaps- no, bats have hollow bones…” Instead of her hissing like she normally did, the daughter bounced over and stared at the open packet. “WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME THERE WERE LOONS?!?” The technicians exchanged a glance. Because we don’t need any more loons around here… “I LOVE LOONS!!!” She exclaimed as she clutched the printed picture. “And they have solid bones and wings, SO THERE!” Loon it was. Anything to get away from the girl.

So they fused the souls together and it took a physical form. It had to be suspended in a tube until they knew it had the natural reflexes that newborns had: breathing, feeding, and regulating heartbeat. It also carried a few things that normal newborns failed to have, such as a unique bone structure and, of course, lightly fuzzed wings. Thankfully, he grew rapidly, as within a year they deemed that it was safe for him to come out of the tube. He was two years old at the time.

Knowing the fact that the first Kimimaro, as he was now called, suffered the disease he did, the boss made sure the techs kept his environment as free of bacteria and viruses as possible. This had its downsides, as it meant that he was very lacking social skills. But, such is life occasionally. His own consisted of twice-a-week sparring lessons, three-times-a-day meals, and a few children toys within his sanitized room. As he grew older, he was allowed paper and coloring sticks, along with a few non-fiction books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Oh yes, what a fun reading selection for a six year old.

1] Kimimaro doesn't have good social skills. He was raised in a controlled environment, and they kept him from others because the first Kimimaro got sick, so they think that he's easily susceptible to disease and such. But since the academy is the only time he?s come in contact with non-sterilized people, we don?t know?

2] He has little experience with emotions. He feels hunger, thirst, fatigue, and pain. That's all he's been exposed to. Again, he has lived in a controlled environment for all his life as an experiment. The techies have no idea how the academy people even knew he existed.

3] He will be sort of a clean freak, as all his life he's been in a neat and sterile enviroment.

4] He's not quite used to being all alone. Not quite used to having to take care of himself.
