So, post your Car audio questions here.
Soo, to start things off:
I have a pair of Ten Inch JL subs, and I am wondering if a 250watt amp would run them nicely. Or should I try to find a 300, or even a 350?

Well, question answered.
I tested out my two subs with a 250 watt MTX amp, and it sounded really nice, except for my crapped out box. So in exchange for a couple other subs I bought, I got the amp I tested them on, another JL audio 10" woofer, and a pair of 4x6 Clarion 3-ways.
So, I'm going to pull my head unit tomorrow and make sure I can hook it all together, and if not I'm looking into a new head unit, either Alpine or Kenwood.

Alpine make the best head units, hands down. if you have the option and the money then definitly go for that.
As for buying an amp for your sub, your amp needs to be able to power AT LEAST the RMS rating of the sub. however to get premium sound you want to gent an amp that runs more than the RMS, but slightly less than the MAX so that you don't blow your sub.
3 way's are nice if you are on a strict budget, but if you want to improve the sound quality in your car you need to move on to component speakers and take out the 3 way's. Besides, Clarion in more of a head unit company and their speakers are somewhat lacking compared to pioneer, rockford fosgate, and even sony.

what jl's are they? w2's or what? my caprice was damn nice in the sound dept. had 3 kicker solo-baric l7's in a custom box with 3 rockford fosgate amps(1000 watts each) and 2 300 watt rockford amps hooked up to the 6 infinity kapa's in the car. 6X9's in the rear deck, 6.5's in the doors and 6.5's in the dash. louder than hell. all ran to a alpine head unit.

The subs are pretty old, 10W0-8 or something like that. Two of them are in a box right now, and that's whats in my truck. I have another, but it's just waiting for a box or something. sweatdrop
I have those two Pioneer 6-1/2" Two-ways in the doors, run from my Kenwood head unit.
Those Clarions were free, so I can't complain all that much. Chances are, they'll wind up in the Pony. ;D And I was wrong, they're 6x9s, dunno why I put 4x6. xd

I've got an alright system. I've got Pioneer head unit powering 2 stock speakers, and 1 boom box speeker. Then I have a Kenwood 300W amp powering 2 6x9 pioneers and one 10 inch 260W JBL Sub. And then I have another JBL waiting for a box. I've got all that for 20 bucks so I think it's alright.

My brother sold his Civic so he took the box out which has 2 x 12" woofers in it and a 400W (I think) amp mounted on it. He also took out the little 250W amp as well. Sorry if I used Watts instead of Volts if that's what it's supposed to be, I don't know what it is and i'm too lazy to go through the garage and look at it.

YEah, they're usually measured in Watts.
And those are some SERIOUSTLY underpowered 12"s. I have one in my car, and my 250w amp isn't even approaching the RMS rating on it. neutral

If he forgets about them, I might just put them in my car when I get one, i'll need to learn a lot about audio wiring first though. He didn't have the time or patience to take out all or save any of the wires so we just went nuts with scissors and covered up the stuff we couldn't reach.

Stereo instillation kits are pretty cheap, so get new wires.
Stereo wiring is pretty easy once you see how it's done.

No, the wiring kits usually come with a diagram to do it. But it's brutally simple, unless you're wiring up mutiple Amps and subs.

Under what circumstances do you need a capacitor?
My brother recently bought a 93 Merc 300 and wants to install his old box set in the trunk with a 300 watt amp I think and one other and and 2 10" speakers. We went to Best Buy and asked one of the car guys there about it and he said he would need a cap, and my brother wasn't sure if that was true.

what kinda music oes your brother listen to?
A Capacitor is a thingy that stores electrical current. So when you turn your ignition key, it'll start storing power. How it works in a audio application, is it stores current for a moment when there isn't enough current to power all the speakers. Like for instance when you're listening to a bassy song, and the bass levels lower in the song, and then wham they come back on in full. Your sub might not be able to cope with the sudden surge reguired. So for a moment it might not sound quite right as it draws current from the circut. A capacitor will supply that current for the surge.
Thats how I understand it anyways.
