Since I have joined, I've heard a myriad of complaints from members about various family members who don't exactly see things eye to eye with your new beliefs.
I, too, have a problem which is extremely irritating, so I felt that I should vent it:
My dad isn't vegetarian. Actually, he's more of a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, if you know what I mean. The problem is eating out. I have learned to hate eating out with him because whenever our family goes to a restaraunt, Dad just freaks out. He announces to the waiter in a hushed-yet-loud-enough-for-everybody-to-hear voice that I don't eat any meat and if there is anything for me to eat on the menu.
By this time, I'm dying with embarrasement because I am perfectly capable of looking through a menu, and I tell him so, but he still does that all the time, and now he treats it as a big joke. I try to tell him that I don't need him looking over my shoulder all the time. Besides, I eat healthier than he does, anyway. Usually by the time he's finished freaking out, I've already found about 3 things for me to eat and am trying to decide between them.
He is a pastor at our church, which is where I'm typing this. I have to stay here for the lunch that they're serving for a bible study group, and dad actually took me down to the kitchen and told all the women that were cooking about me and pestered them about their menu.
I know my dad cares about my health, but I think I've already proven that I can choose healthy food for myself. Do you think there's any way I can get him to ease off a little?

MEEP! Well My whole family doesn't even know Im a vegitarian! They asked me to cut up angus meat with scissors for dinner! crying They dispise vegans and vegitarians!

My family knows they haven't embarresed me though. My sister called me a herbavore in a good way though. She was learning her terms and she said she was a carnavor and I was a herbavore.

Only me and my mom dont eat meat. My dad works at a meat packing place for goodness sake!
Well at least we saved live two baby chicks from being turned into dog food so thats good...

It's kind of the other way around for me....
I and my parents have been vegitarians since I was born, and probably before for them, so it was their idea, but my dad has recently started eating meat again for no apparent reason....
My parents are divorced, so there's no problem with cooking, but he didn't even consult me... I wouldn't mind, but he asked me before starting to eat strawberries (which I am allergic to)....
I think you should try embarrasing him in public about him eating meat... See if that works... And it could be fun... 3nodding

both my parents are flesh eaters. My dad makes me feel bad for being vegan, but I dont care 3nodding Save The Animals!!

No seriously though, it does sound exactly like him. He'll take us out for dinner all the time and be like to the waiter, "Do you have any not meat stuff? Because my daughter is vegitarian and she doesnt eat anything here." But it sounds alot worse than that, at all the restruants we go to it is practically all meat served, I get stuck eating french fries. xd Not that I dont enjoy that, but eating at home gives me alot more options. My dad practically lives for meat and makes fun of me all the time about not eating meat. He needs to just SHUT UP, I'm sorry but he does. He's all, "Well we can go there cause ___ wont eat anything there, but no where else has stuff that we like and vegitarian stuff so we're gonna go here anyways" He seems so selfish, yeah I love him and all, but he thinks its funny that I'm vegitarian and he makes jokes about my reasons for being one. I do eat way healthier than he would ever eat so he should really be quiet. Heh, I needed to vent. My mom sorta understands me but always trys to make me eat meat or chicken or something. They dont get teh point! gonk

When I visited the US pretty recently at alot of places I also ended up just eating fries. It kinda sucks. But the people I was staying with were really nice and cooked food without meat for me. Infact if it wasn't for them I think I'd have survived on snack food and fries LoL. My family is utterly devoid of any vegetarians. My sister used to be a vegetarian but that was when I was pretty young. Under 6 to be accurate, heh. My parents used to try and make me eat meat but they kind of chilled out somewhere after a year. Now they're very supportive of me and help a poor student out by buying him loads of meat-free food for him to take home! Hehe. As for your dilemma, well I think my parents stopped the moment they realised that my reason for being vegetarian wasn't "hippie-ish" or "left wing rubbish" but an actual real, good reason. Whenever he makes a joke of your morals then you should say something about it. I'd go for something like this, but that's me. "You know, Vegetarianism isn't a joke. I don't find it funny that animals are subjected to a life of what is comparable to imprisonment and eventual slaughter. It's like giving somebody a death sentance from birth." Just keep doing something like that each time. After a while they'll have picked up your views in the end. I have some awesome arguements about politics and morality with my Dad LoL.

I couldn't imagine anyone working at a meat-packing place and still eating meat...

Why can't they see that this slaughtering thing is a real problem and respect the hold it has on my life, without acting as if it's a real problem. Sometimes I feel that people get mad at me just for being vegetarian...

Pretty much all of my family isn't vegetarian. It's just one of my uncles, my cousin (who I personally convinced into going veg blaugh ), and me. Most of my family is accepting of my choice, but there are some who just won't have it. Like yesterday one of my younger cousins found out I was veg and she said "YOU'RE VEGETARIAN?!! I don't like you." stressed My Dad isn't really supportive of it either, but I don't see him till summer. He says "I need the nutrients". I tried to explain you can get those nutrients in other foods WITHOUT THE CHOLESTEROL MEAT HAS, but he didn't listen. I just hope he doesn't force any meat on me when I'm visiting.

I went to eat with my dad again, and he was pestering me to choose a place, and I said we could eat any where except McDonalds and Burger King. But he still doesn't understand, and he said something that really hurt me. He called me "the problem". Is that all I am? Some picky eater that is just a bother to everyone else?!
I NEVER WANT TO EAT WITH HIM AGAIN! scream
