Welcome to the Nest of Shadow and Soldier, South Wind's residential heartless. This thread may be a bit... unique from other nests, as it will contain information not only on Shadow and Soldier, but on the NPC flock they are a part of.

Currently, this flock is strictly limited to just Shadow and Soldier - it is my goal to, one day, turn this into an actual flock. Here you will find the information on this NPC flock as well as their mythology and beliefs which will be the under laying "basis" for the flock. It won't be limited to just heartless, though you may wish to seriously consider and double-check your options if you wish to have your hippogryph become part of this flock... >3

Quick Rules

  • Please do not post! This is still Shadow and Soldier's nest.
  • If you really like the heartless flock, feel free to IM me over AIM or talk to me in the thread. If you use IM, please introduce yourself - Maru has a habit of collecting AIM SNs and forgetting who is who sometimes.
  • The heartless flock are evil, plotting bas--ses. Please don't take offense at their actions and/or words. They just want your yummy heart to hug you with their sharp claws and biting dispositions.
  • Any ill and evil created IC is to stay IC. The trouble with evil characters is that players take it personally. If in an RP with Shadow or Soldier makes you feel uncomfortable, LET ME KNOW! I really don't want to upset anyone on accident! ><
  • So... interested in joining the heartless ranks? Any's welcome as long as they share the same goals as the heartless. Personally, I'd love to make the symbol of their flock similar to the heartless' insignia, or use it exact. This as well as the flock's mythology and such are open to debate with others who wish to form a flock - I am just laying out the base. =x

Flock Info

Name: "The Heartless" is what others call them; the name amongst themselves is unknown.
Territory: The fringes of the Care-a-Lot Flock
Members: Varies; this "flock" is composed of a loose band of black hyppogryphs with glowing yellow eyes. They are few in numbers, but widespread and similar in appearance to the point that their numbers are often, currently, exaggerated.
Alphas: Claws-of-Abyss and Eyes-in-Darkness (NPCs no dah.)
Beta: Shriek-in-Night and Wrath-of-Dusk (NPCs no dah)
Values: Trickery. Deceit. Strength. Speed. Stealth. Silence. The faster a foe is overwhelmed, the better. If you fail to take them down, then you'd better hurry and try again before another sees you. Dishonor and ranks shift pretty quickly in this flock, and they often change with little or no warning. The upper ranks assure their rank by attacking those of a lower rank - this gives them a "violent" and "cruel" appearance, yet in reality... Well, if you were ticked at the world, you'd want to take it out on something too, right?

Stealth, being one of the prized values, is often used by one flock member on another to attack them. Whether the attacks begin by first sneaking up on the other or by attacking in a sudden fit are unimportant - it's the surprise that matters. These attacks are not serious, that is, unless both gryphs refuse to yield to one another. As a result of this, one can be killed or seriously injured. It is rumored that this flock contains cannibals that eat not only their weaklings, but members of other flocks. This rumor has yet to be proven, as there is also several rumors that this flock is composed of demons, hags, child-eaters, one eyed one horned flying purple people[/strick] black gryffon eaters, and human-lovers. Really, the most "love" that a member of this particular flock ever gave to a human was a screech followed by several swipes and the theft of a head of cabbage, which was blamed on the neighboring bunny.

Despite all of these traits, the heartless are highly protective of their offspring. While the offspring of this clan learn separation earlier in comparison to others, it does not mean that the heartless are any less... well, heartless. This is done to ensure that the chick becomes strong by not becoming emotionally dependant on another. The only time a heartless truly depends on another is when they become mates, in which each becomes a "mirror" for the other. Always together, always attacking in sync, rarely alone. There is, after all, safety in numbers... Siblings have been known to band together until they find mates.

Flock Mythology
(As told by He-who-Catches-the-Moon-in-Claws)

The fur of our kin never began as black as the deepest abyss within these cold mountains. No, once it was as white and mottled as those creatures that live within the world above within the snow. Light, yet not pure - never pure, as nothing exists to be pure. Time has devoured our Ancestor's name, thus they are known as Who-Cast-the-Shadow.

Who-Cast-the-Shadow was smart, swift and strong as the legends tell. It is from our Ancestor that we have learned how to hunt, to find shelter and to strike swiftly without hesitation. We are unafraid of the life that streams in many. The red water which runs within all of us has made us who we are - others may quake in its scent, while We owe it everything. It is vile to taste, yet without it we would not exist.

It came to pass that Who-Cast-the-Shadow took a liking to another. It did not take long for Who-Cast-the-Shadow to discover their heart's desire elsewhere. Filled with envy, Who-Cast-the-Shadow began to plot a way to be rid of the other in order to obtain the other for their own.

This did not come to pass.

The wind had shifted, bringing the scent of Who-Cast-the-Shadow to their foe. As their head raised in confusion, Who-Cast-the-Shadow abandoned their plan and attacked. With each swipe of their claws, the ground became redder and redder. The Flock rushed to the battle, and Who-Cast-the-Shadow was found to blame. With crippled wings pressed tight against an aching body, Who-Casts-the-Shadow ran as revenge for every glance and hiss of envy was extracted until the territory was reached.

But Who-Cast-the-Shadow continued to run, slowing only to rest before running again. It came to pass that all traces of their treachery was cleaned by the ground, yet the ground itself was diminishing, vanishing beneath the once red paws.

Soon, Who-Cast-the-Shadow came to a river. It was chick's play to fly across it, even if their world before consisted of cold, snow, and ice. Here, the land was green and fresh... and sprawled beneath it all was a gigantic tree. This tree had roots of an odd, cold yellow substance and leaves of blood. When one of these fell, it was Who-Casts-the-Shadow who caught and ate it, having eaten nothing while they fled.

It became clear.

It was all
their fault, why Who-Cast-the-Shadow was exiled. It certainly wasn't their own - didn't they just want what any other hippogryph wanted? Who-Cast-the-Shadow had a plan.

It was when the moon was spun, showing its darkness and light seven times that Who-Cast-the-Shadow returned to their homeland. Bitter envy nearly choked them with rage upon seeing how
well off their former foe was. Who-Cast-the-Shadow was determined to bring them down.

And lo! A whisper in the dark here, a whisper there. With each tale, with each sweet lie Who-Cast-the-Shadow turned the flock against their former foe. It wasn't Who-Cast-the-Shadow's fault that they had fought, was it? No one had witnessed the start of it - what if they had, perhaps, judged unfairly?

Who-Cast-the-Shadow stayed far from the Alpha and Beta pairs of the flock. It would not do any good to get their attention with the lies. Even though already they were wary of the words being spoken, Who-Cast-the-Shadow chose their listeners carefully, lying in the snow, close to the ground hidden while whispering upon the wind. First was lies and tricks of guilt, and now... Now, the shunned omega learned what had befallen Who-Cast-the-Shadow, of how
warm and how much food they had found. One by one, Who-Cast-the-Shadow lured three of the flock and lead them away.

It was not to where the Great Tree was. No, Who-Cast-the-Shadow followed their shadow to the mountains, where the air was cool to comfort and food was plenty. It was here that Who-Cast-the-Shadow began our kin, mating with the strongest of the males she had lured off and allowing the other two to become beta. Born in darkness, our fur was pitch black with their guilt and Who-Cast-the-Shadow's sins...

...but these sins we bear willingly, as it reminds us that those of the light are not to be trusted. They are thieves who steal what they please, be it another's Half or earthly thing. It is up to we, Children of the Shadow to trust our Ancestor's tale and seek revenge where we may, and spread lies where we can. It is our duty to be where we are least expected, and to turn any opportunity into our advantage.

And now, now there are those who believe they can change the world with happy thoughts, rainbows and kisses that are in our territory.
They have not felt or known what we have known though our Ancestor's tale whispered within the deepest caves. Perhaps they are the offspring of Who-Cast-the-Shadow's enemy - for this reason alone we are to seek their weakness and make use of it.

Their ways are alien to our's. Their ways are the ways that have lead Who-Cast-the-Shadow to eat from the Great Tree. Their ways are the ways that have driven Who-Cast-the-Shadow into a slow madness that ended only by eternal sleep. Their ways... are the ways of ruin.

Name: Shadow
Nickname: ???
Gender: Female
Distinct Markings: Two antennae instead of ears, and the Heartless crest upon her chest. Also pure black with hints of red, and glowing yellow eyes.
Personal "Quirks": As a newborn, Shadow discovered her lungs early and took every opprotunity to try them out.
Personality: Unknown as of yet.

Horsefly's Name: Alines
Horsefly's Gender: Presumed to be Female
Personality: A very put-upon horsefly, Alines was bullied by Shadow's parents into watching over her. While Alines sees Shadow as loud, obnoxious hippogryph... Well, she probably is. Alines is very good at his/her duty, however, and keeps track of not only Shadow but Soldier as well. Of course, Alines doesn't like Soldier much since Soldier enjoys using Alines as a soft pillow, but hey - what can you do when your charges are much bigger and heavier then you?

The Hyppogryphs Shadow has met, and her feelings towards them~

Alines, is a nice little fluttery creature! It keeps looking around as if it expects something to eat it, though. That, and every time I open my mouth it winces and draws back. Weird!

Asajj, is very... Um, I don't know. Her fur's different, and she has the same stuff that I think my brother has on that smells like something you eat. She tackled me the last time, and it was so cool! I wanna learn to pounce like that!

Soldier, is my brother. He sleeps a lot, but the long thing that comes offa his head is fun to chew on - it's so cold!

Unknown, but there was a nice scent about them... They were warm, too! (Aeryn)

Unknown, but their fur was... dark! Like mine! My watcher kept hissing at him for some reason, though. (Oz)

Beneath his paws, there was something... odd. Uneven. It wasn't necessarily cold - his side was pressed up against something warm, and there was something covering him. Soldier twitched his small paws, unknowingly crinkling the dried leaves that his den mother had painstakingly gathered to serve as a bed. The heartless flock had thick pelts to survive within the cold caverns of the mountains, but the young still had yet to grow the thick fur that gave the adults little to no discomfort.

He was tired. It wasn't that he hadn't done his share of flailing earlier that day - but his head was so heavy! There was always a slight chill present, given to him by the metal that protected his head. Occasionally, a soft, unheard ping! would sound out, followed by a soft vibration. Soldier liked the vibrations. He had no idea where they were coming from, but they were nice. The vibrations often came with many, seemingly incomprehensive smells - these faded as he seemed to have floated up, the chill in the air growing as he was moved into a more private, secluded cavern by his mother. Even now at rest, his mother kept a diligent guard over her young, hissing at the shadows as they seemed to thicken, then thin as the would-be trespasser quickly moved on.

It was no secret how dangerous the territory was. It was on the borders of the Care-A-Lot flock, and they wouldn't be pleased by how close the small band of "Endarkened Ones" lived. They lived in secret, always hiding and slinking about the shadows, wary of the day that they will be driven out. But danger didn't come from just outside the flock - inside, it existed as well. Standings and rankings in the flock changed dramatically upon whim as one member attacks another with speed, stealth and surprise, intending to catch them off guard.

As such, the heartless became very, very alert to their surroundings. At least, when rank and such mattered to them.

Soldier shifted his paws, tilting his head and tall helm away from his mother as he shifted, doing his best to get comfortable. His den mother spared him a glance before returning her gaze on the shadows, ever vigilant for the unexpected attack that could come at any time.

Soldier uttered a sleepy chirp of protest as something moved him, settling down onto his other side. The chirp grew sharper upon recognizing a familiar scent before curling closer to the bulk of the hippogryph that joined him.

His mother gave her mate a brief nuzzle of affection before slinking on and out, allowing him to take over guard-duty and rest.
