Overview

Pros
- Interesting Battle Style, a different way of the Shining series.
- Randomly generated maps and set treasures, so you never know what you'll get
- More Field type work
- Angel Wings are actually pretty useful
- Multiplayer makes the game interesting, but i haven't tried it yet.

Cons
- You'll be pressing A a lot
- It's not very long
- You can only carry about 25 items...
- It gets rather redundant

Well, it doesn't look all that different from, say, Shining Wisdom and Shining Tears... except for the choice of heroes. Should be interesting.

Well i'm playing it right now... and so far... It seems that the Vampire/Assassin-like character looks fun.

Playing Wizard again, and SP runs out so much faster XD.

::pokes the Mentalist:: You wanted to be reminded about doing a review of the much reviled SaGa Frontier.

If it makes no reference to the overt lesbian overtones in Asellus' path I shall be very disappointed.

As I have demanded it

This Week, May 21th - Mat 27th, The Spotlight goes to

Saga Frontier

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

System : PSX
Players : 1
Genre : RPG-Menubased

The Characters

-The Whole game is made up of 7 different stories in practically the same world. You can play 1 at a time, and completling all 7 unlocks the Bonus part thing XD.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Blue

- My Personal Favorite ^.^
- Blue is a Magician from "Magic Kingdom", and is on a journey to master 3 different opposite magics and to defeat his "brother"
- He is mainly a Spellcaster, but as all characters in the game, you can easily make him into anything you want
- Blue's speciality is magic, and late in the game, He is the ONLY one who can master up to about 8 Different magics (Yes Even Realm + Mystic Magic)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Emilia

- A Fashion model who gets blamed as being the murderer of the man of her dreams, as she chases out the true criminal, her life becomes rather involved with... well... the best Girls in the game. XD
- She's suppose to be a Gun-Girl, but I never bothered with Guns. I made her a Hand-2-Hand Fighter. She can go anyway you want it though.
- Emilia's speciality is the fact that she is a fashion model. As her missions progress, you are allowed to change Emilia's Costume. Also she starts with one of the BEST Hand-2-Hand Fighters in the game. Liza! ( The reason is because she learns DSC the fastest, as well as being uber strong).

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Red

- While on the brink of death by a mysterious syndicate called Black X, the hero saves him, by turning into a Hero.
- Personally, I really really really hated Red for no apparent reason... XD
- He's a Hand-2-Hand or a Sword Fighter, you could try magic, but I wouldn't.
- Red's speciality is the fact that he is able to turn into if there are People or Monsters in the party, Mecs are the only exception.
- Note: You'll notice how you can't change Blue or Red's name for a reason XD.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Asellus

- My 2nd Favorite XD
- Asellus was orginally a Human girl, but after some carriage crash, she disappeared and was saved by an infusion of Mystic Blood, making her Half-Human - Half-Mystic.
- As the her story progresses, she makes "Mystic Friends", such as White Rose, and if you're lucky (Or a lazy person with a guide) Princess Rei (One of the Few characters with Mirage Magic).
- Asellus' speciality is her Half-Human, Half-Mystic Blood. Mystics are given 3 different "Item-Attacks" - Mystic Sword, Mystic Boots, and Mystic Glove each can "absorb" a monsters ability and use it as your own. Asellus is the only one who can use Mystic and Human abilities. (Personally I used her as a Swordswoman XD, Her + Asura = You're so dead)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

T260G

- A robot with a forgotten mission, is found by a little boy in the town of Junk.
- As a Mec, he can easily be overpowered because of the fact that Mecs gain stats through wearing Equips or Items, but as the game nears the end, Mec's usually become useless except as Punching Bags.
- T260G's Specialty is his ability to change into different Mec-Types. ONLY in his story he is able to do this. Each Mec-Type has different abilities and special stats. My favorite was the Small one, with Bit-System XD.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Riki

- A monster class Hero, whos homeworld is on the edge of destruction. Riki is journeying to collect all the "Rings" in order to save his world.
- As a Monster ( and I do hate Monsters), he is able to "absorb" a monster at the end of every battle and take a skill from them. As your skills add up, Riki will change into different monsters, acquiring their stats. (Making the best monster is pretty hard)
- Riki's speciality is the MOST USEFUL THING EVER, The Rings!. As the story goes on, Riki will collect rings and will be able to use them once every battle. Some of them, are rather cheesy, others rather useless. Riki starts out with the Guardian Ring.
- Note: When you get Mei-Ling, and you will, DO NOT PLAY HER IN RIKI's GAME EVER.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Lute

- Lute is a BOY (I thought he was a girl XD), and is a musician seeking adventure.
- Though the story is really brief, he seems to be portrayed as a "Normal" human class hero.
- He's a Fighter type XD
- Lute really has no specialilty other than the fact that he is enabled to use the Ship as a travel source.

Battle System

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

As you can see, battles are intiated when you decide to run into the monster, or Vice-Versa. The Above Screenie depicts Shrike's Bio-Lab. The best place to Get Skills, Stats, and a Monster called Cotton.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

While in battle, there are a lot of actions to choose from.
Moving left or right, changes which set of moves you want to use IE: Items, Sword Skills, Magic, etc....
There is a way to defend, but I forget which button it is XD

A special feature to Saga Frontier is the Combination Attack.
~ While targeting a particular enemy, you have a chance to combine your parties attacks, (From 2 - 5 People), to do increased Damage.

Tips

~ Here are some Major Tips to follow!

1.) DSC = Dream Super Combo, you need the Skills : Sliding, Suplex, Babel Crumble, and Giant Swing ( All Hand-2-Hand Skills) in order to use. (By then end of the game, you will be busting out at least 10k Damage with it.)
2.) If you don't have Blue as your main character, travel to Luminous or Devin's Port, and find Rouge ( a White Haired Mage, who in fact is Blue's "brother")
3.) The Asura, can be bought for 4 LP ( Lifepoints), in Fancitaru (Asellus' starting place), it maybe a heavy cost, but it's worth it.
4.) The Spell Lightsword, gives you +10 All Stats, and is the strongest sword in the game, If you ever make a Swordsman (*COUGH* GEN * COUGH), Make him learn Lightsword before the end of the game.
5.) Make sure to balance your team out, between Healing and Fighting.
6.) DO NOT GO MASTER MAGIC WITHOUT HAVING YOUR "Desired" party. Otherwise they will not recieve the "Gift" to learn the advanced Spells.
7.) Having a majority of Fighting/Sword Skills or Magic Skills, enabled you to have a "Crown", making those skills cost 1 less WP or 1 Less MP.
8.) (Do the Ingot Cheat, if you're too lazy to hunt for money to get all the good equips.)

Recommended Characters.

- Rouge
- Gen
- Liza
- Time-Lord ( You'll get him pretty late I bet)
- Lute
- Rabbit ( Red Only )
- Annie ( Replacement or Equal Level to Gen )
- Thunder ( If you want a Monster, let it be him)

Overview

- Though it may be the same world 7 times around, the game is full of different characters to make your party with, Different Skills to be learned, as well as different Magics to be mastered.
- In my opinion there really are no major Cons, but there are a few nit-picky things here and there.

Overall Rating 10/10

This post made no reference to the overt lesbian overtones in Asellus' path. I am very disappointed.

Blue

- My Personal Favorite ^.^

I did not so much like Blue. Almost every other character path let you pick up his 'brother' Rouge, whose magic was always a great help. Then in the very beginning of Blue's go around, you're told that you have to kill Rouge. So I have to kill the one who has been helping me whilst playing as the other characters, favoring the life of some loser who didn't bother to lift a finger in any other quest? Argh. I just let Blue die in their duel because of that.

Quote:
Asellus

- As the her story progresses, she makes "Mystic Friends", such as White Rose,

Oh, is that what they're calling it these days? ^_-

Quote:
Lute

- Though the story is really brief

Gods, I'll say. It's basically a matter of going through the intro and then leveling up until you can take on the final boss. I got far, far more use out of Lute in other characters' stories than in his own.

Quote:

Well, there is Lute's poor excuse for a quest. Then there's the fact that you have to go through the same subquests three or four times with different characters (sometimes as a part of the story, sometimes to build your characters up), so obviously the designers should have provided more to do if the game was going to be so drastically non-linear. Also, there are those characters that you're forced to take with you who are utterly useless. The lack of characterization for most of the secondary characters (and Lute) was unfortunate...

Eh. Some good ideas, but in the end an average game. I found that SaGa Frontier 2 improved a lot over the first.

Sio: Just one of those nitpicky things I hated about Red <,<...

Zodiac: To be honest, I think I might have hated Riki's quest the most... seeing as the first time around, I had Mei-Ling as a main character /sob
And for some reason, if you didn't use all your powerful moves in the beginning of the final battle on the "boss", all your damage woul be lower than 8k ( Even for my Gen with Asura + Light Sword and all the other cheap armors and equips XD)
