What if you could create your own custom FF party (7-9 characters)? Anyway, here's my teams (post yours here):
1. FF7/8 Delta Force
A. Cloud (FF7) B. Barret (FF7, I want at least one strong guy with a powerful gun arm, especially when fitted with Microlaser, AM Cannon or Missing Score! Or maybe a Dalek Gun (!).) C. Rinoa Heartilly (FF cool D. Cait Sith (I prefer a multi-role attacking talking cat with a tough moogle plush on my team! I wonder if I should give him a Neo Bahamut summon for starters?) E. Selphie Tilmitt (at least she won't sell you out to Shinra and steal your materia like Yuffie did once! But I hope she's wearing underpants with her yellow dress!) F. Irvine Kinneas (a crack gunner/sniper is what I want on my squad.) G. Tifa Lockheart (She just screams sex appeal as well as martial arts grace and power.) H. Cid Highwind (If it weren't for that damn Shinra, he would have gone to "Infinity And Beyond!". Either that or Cid would have waited till Shera got out of Shinra No. 26.)

i would have:
POWER HITTERS
Squall (good for both long and short range)
Sephiroth-AC (gotta have him on any good team)
Cloud-AC (for the multi-sword attacks and looks better)
Vincent (he's a worthwhile character)
and finally.....*drum roll*
Auron (he's a real power hitter and his support skills really come in handy)

For the sake of the argument, I will only use FF characters who are playable, no Sephiroths or Kefka's in my party. No FFXI characters. And granted I have yet to play FFXII, so after playing that game I just might go back and exchange a character or two from people from XII.
Main Character- Terra FFVI: She is a very well rounded character with lots of abilities, including white and black magic, strong attacks, and the ability to turn into an Esper to fight. Now there is some debate over who exactly was the main character in FFVI, but if you ask me it was Terra, and she is who I choose to be my main character.
Whm/Smn- Yuna FFX: A nice combination of White mage and Summoner, Yuna wasn't afraid to face a challenge, heck she was ready to throw her life away for the greater good when she became a Smn. Just the type of Whm I would want rather than the ones who run away the moment they draw hate or get hit once in a fight. You all know the type I'm talking about from FFXI
Warrior- T.G. Cid FF Tactics: You got to have a Cid in the dream team. And though most people love Cid Highwind from FFVII, for sheer power and awesome warrior attacks and streangth look no further than T.G. Cid. I mean there is no other character who once you got them in your party made the game so easily beatable.
Dragoon- Kain FFIV: Another great damage dealer. Dragoons are an excellent fighting class in the FF series, and when it comes to Dragoons Kain is at the top of the list. Always a must have in my party.
Mnk/Nin- Armarant FFIX: Is he the best Monk? no, is he the best Ninja? no, but he is an awesome combination of the two. Great streangth, ninja abilities, and ranged attacks. If ranged attackers or just need another powerful attacker in my party, Armarant would be a good one to change in when he is needed.
Black Mage- Edea FFVIII: Okay I did say only playable characters, but Edea was playable in FFVIII, even if it was only a short while. But she fulfills my all out black mage role, she is the only blm I can think of powerful enough to where an entire army/special task force in Seed needed to be created just to take her down, and she has that awesome theme song. Fethos, Lusec, Wecos Venosec
Samurai- Auron FFX: Another great swordsman and damage dealer. Heck only character I know of who when built up strong enough can deal over 50,000 HP damage. Granted FFX is the only FF game to allow that so far. But if I need to have an all out DD main group, and T.G. Cid isn't enough to handle it alone, Auron is right there to back him up.
Ranged- Vincent FFVII: another strong fighter, and he gives me another ranged attacking character for those pesky fights where you need all your melee fighters to be ranged, that and he can turn into Monsters for even greater damage. Can't top that.
Gambler- Cait Sith FFVII: I don't care what people say, I like Cait Sith. And while he really hasn't shown any excellent abilities to be a stand out in a dream team, he does have one ability no other FF character has. The sacraficial lamb. For those scenes like the temple of the ancients where someone has to die for the quest to progress, Cait Sith can do it, and just come right back with Cait Sith 2,3,4 and however many times you need to use an expendable body.
Honorable mentions
Irvine FFVIII- I wanted another ranged attacker with Armarant, Though is gun skills did better damage than Vincent, Vincents ability to turn into monsters made him a better choice for a multi- use character.
Freya FFIX- I wanted a dragoon, and though she had more abilities which could heal and increase status effects, I felt I had the well balanced character in Terra and I really didn't needed to stack up on characters like that.
Ridia FFIV- at first I thought about stacking Blm and Smn into one character in which Ridia was the only character who was a Blm/Smn, But I felt the combination of Yuna whm/smn with Edea Blm was better than Ridia blm/smn with any other whm you can name.
Cloud FFVII- arguably the most liked and best main character in an FF series, but I already got great sword users in T.G. Cid and Auron, I really didn't need a third one at the expence of all the extra abilities Terra brought to the table.
