I was visiting Jynk in her new shop, The Beat Generation, when I first saw Anna. Her smile was open, eyes wide with something I can only call curiosity, and her skin beautiful. The markings were exquisite and I was drawn to her. She saw me, walked towards me and simply looked at me. When she did, I felt as if the curiosity in her eyes had somehow been communicated to my heart. I couldn't help but feel a strange kinship towards her.

Eager to be around this creature who effortlessly seemed to open my eyes, mind and heart, I readily agreed when Jynk offered me a job at The Beat Generation coffee shop. I was even more ecstatic when I was offered Anna's guardianship.

Anna inspires the desire for exploration, which was why I felt that kinship with her. I had the soul of an explorer myself, so she complements me incredibly well. And what she inspires, she is. She is forever running around, looking for things she hasn't seen yet. She's forever widening her field of exploration, and I worry that the day might come when I can't find her.

When she's not exploring, she's reading about the adventures of others. She loves reading about the pioneers in history, or the adventurers in literature. Speaking of which, I better stock the library. Perhaps that might help in getting her to stay home every so often.

Anna has a quiet personality, but she's not shy. She just prefers observing more than being in the center of attention. She's more independent than your average Beat (if any of the Beats can be called average) and doesn't really care much for rules. The best way to approach her would be the direct one: Extend your hand for a firm handshake and tell her your name. She appreciates straightforwardness, being mostly straightforward herself. This is not to say she can't be mischievious. She can be, mostly when you're not expecting it.

Afsana herself holds the love of exploration in her heart, which is why she feels such kinship towards Anna. As a person, she's loving, compassionate and friendly, with occasional mood swings.

She is also bouncy to a fault and easily approachable if you're not afraid of overbouncy people. Her favorite way of passing the time is being with her pets and her closest friends.

Anna has a room of her own, where she spends most of her time when she's at home. Her room, furnished by Afsana, contains a large wooden bookcase, desk and a double bed. A large window, complete with a window seat, covers a large part of one wall. It is here that Anna sits, her eyes, like her heart, on the world outside.

Her walls are adorned with landscapes and pictures from various areas of the world, and her bookcase filled with books of all languages and genres. The wooden desk was clear of any clutter except for the journal in the center.

August 26, 2005: Anna comes back to the Beat shop after a long period away. She meets Nairn; there is something brewing between the two, I tell you.

August 27, 2005: Anna finds herself with a familiar, an aquatic being. She doesn't know what to name it yet.

The moon was just beginning to rise. That was the first thing Anna noticed as she entered her room, not tired, but looking forward to some quality reading time. She went to the window seat, and sat a while, enjoying the clear view she had of the rising moon.

Barely a few minutes passed, when her attention wandered, and her eyes fell on her desk. In the middle of her desk, sat a polished, leather-bound book with a pen beside it. Curious, she went to the desk and picked up the book, examining it. She turned to the first page. In neat handwriting, she saw the following note:

Note
Anna,
I got this journal for you hoping you will find this useful. I thought it a shame that a person that saw the world with eyes as curious as yours had no way of recording what it saw, so I got you this, confident that one day, the adventures recounted here will surpass even those imagined by Jules Verne.

With all my love,
Afsana

Forgetting about reading, Anna sat down on her chair, picked up the pen, turned to a fresh page and started writing her first journal entry:

Anna
I have not used writing tools before. This will be interesting. I saw many new things today. Many eggs hatched and there are hatchlings in all corners. They have beautiful colors. There is much activity, but it is enjoyable. The shop is interesting. It has character. It is more my home than this one. I suppose I can say this room is my second home.

I like writing. I am glad I got this book and pen. I should remember to thank Afsana.

Anna yawned and sat at her desk. Opening her diary, she realized that she hadn't written in it since her first "introductory" entry. She picked up the pen next to it and started writing, her handwriting somewhat shaky.

Anna
I have not gotten much sleep this week. Two miles from here, I found a big, old mansion, and it has been very interesting to explore. There are many rooms, and many interesting pieces--pieces of art, pieces that look like they come from another world. There was also a room with many books, although they looked unread. I did not bring any of those pieces that looked expensive, but I did bring an old brush that looked like it will not be used again. I did not bring any of the books either. I spend some days looking through them in the room itself. Some books are boring, lots of numbers and tables. But there are some with interesting pictures and some with nice stories.

I noticed extensive gardens around the mansion. That, I have reserved for tomorrow.

Anna
I just read over what I last wrote. It's been a while since I've written. I get so busy running about town, looking for new things that I forget to write about what I see. I hope Tirnanog won't be mad. I've rarely seen her either and I know she's not happy about that, but still she lets me have my way. As long as I don't do anything bad, I suppose it's fine with her.

There is a big forest a few blocks from that mansion I wrote about. And when I say big, I mean very big. I heard new sounds in that place, and I caught sight of things I never saw before. There were all sorts of colors and I even found a gem at the bottom of a tree at one point. It's clear usually, but it changes color sometimes--mostly in the pale colors. Once I saw that it was dark blue, but that was on a rainy day, so that may have been a trick of the light. It's beautiful. I haven't stopped going to the forest yet. It's calm, peaceful and beautiful, yet mysterious. It captivates me.

Anna
It's good to be home. I spent some time at the shop yesterday--most of it in the backroom. I met Nairn...he's grown up some. Some, meaning a little. There's still a bit of a boy in him, although I suspect that's his influence showing.

We were children together, Nairn and I, so it was strange to find that something different had entered into the way we communicated with each other. We should have been more comfortable with the one another, but things at some times got very tense. There were many things that weren't being said, and a lot of it was on his part. I remember him being more straightforward than this. Maybe it's because I'd been away for so long...

Oh, and I have a new friend. Jynk calls it my familiar and says it's aquatic, but it's nice to think of it as my friend. I still haven't named it yet. Maybe some of the books on my shelf will suggest a good name.

Anna
Looking for ideas for names, I was flipping through I book I read a long time ago. It is an Irish story about the adventures of a ship that got lost at sea. The Captain had a pet fish--an exotic kind that he'd paid a very high price for--that he'd named Ula. It means "sea jewel". That, I think is a perfect name for my floating little friend.
