*sighs* The depths of human stupidity never ceases to amaze (and quite frankly, baffle) me.

Though I must say, even though I merely copy-n-pasted definitions off websites, these are quite thorough. Impressive, considering how the infallable the internet is (wee! sarcasm!). I know however that I missed genres. I know I have...

What about breaks and all the sub-genres of breaks? NU ENRG? Looks like you got all the house there. Maybe a bit more on the sub-genres of trance. You could look forever and never get them all. But over all, as I said before, good job! smile

Just compile a list of all the sub-sub-sub genres (or whatever) of EDM and I'll add it. One can never be too thorough.

No mention of freeform or trancecore in the hardcore genres, i think they need to be recognized as their popularity is quickly growing.

If you want to make life easier on yourself then there is really good music or bad music i.e. music you like and music you don't like

every brain responds differently to how music is perceived. One of my best friends says, music is the mathematics of emotion. It certainly feels that way with trance and me.

I tend to think of progressive (the set going somewhere as a journey) as the way I first heard it described as the b*****d child of house and trance.

Disco never died. It just went underground and evolved into what became house and techno.

Trance in the early mid nineties was for more techier than the euphoric or epic trance that blew up at the end of the 90s.

A good way of thinking of techno is as a looping of beats.

A good way of thinking of hard dance is beats over 140bpm.

Techno was the driving force behind where the music was going in the early 90s before trance became the melodic sounds that could.

At the end of the 90s, progressive (house and trance) started to become the driving force. Progressive had a lot of dtractors as afficionado as sets would take too long to build or slow prog. Personally, I prefer the pumpin' and bangin' prog that the style more or less as chosen by the dancers

In 2001, electro started to emerge as a major genre of influence for other genres.

Earlier, 2-step or garage was hailed as the big thing. But there was way too much violence with that scene on islands like Ayia Napa. The older more sophisticated crowds disappeared and were replaced by thuggier newcomer. And the popier two-step that was around was just seen more and more as a fad than music meant to influence. The sound went from having more mass market radio friendliness to the more urban sounds it's people identified with in the age of bling bling and taoists of Yo! That scene was its own worst enemy with all the stabbings and shootings.

Electro had more of a radio friendly sound and the retro-80s feel of the way the music was back then was updated for the times. And anybody and everybody jumped big time to electro as the most fashionable genre.

In the last few years, tribal has come to be the genre influencing all the others. Right now, tribal is music at the top of the mountain.

Techno has also had a resurgence in influencing the sound of other genres.

I heart heart heart trance. AVB (Armin van buuren) is my man for setting the trance course (It went from Oakenfold (before he got into prog and americanising his sound to do more movie work) to Tiesto to AVB setting the style. I know trance pretty well so for me I see DJs like Eddie Halliwell, John OBir, Phynn, and Gabriel & Dresden to set the standards. Paul Van Dyk believe it or not does not consider himself a trance DJ (riiiiight mr. for an angel). Also look out for sander van doorn (trust the dutch when it comes to trance lol) with a much techier trance sound.
If you know nothing of trance, then you should check out Above & Beyond, Kyau vs. Albert, Thrillseekers, Lange, Ferry Corsten (who throw in a lot of electro in his trance these days), Pulser.

If you want to learn more about the tribal then you should check out Chus & Ceballos and the master that is DJ Vibe.

If you like Electro see what Tfiefswarz (sp.) are up to as well as Tiga (he is the awesome!) or you can check out the popier stuff like the scissor sisters and fischerspooner.

Music is music. It take to much time to classify and most people have differing opinions on how to classify it. Sometimes it's better to just dance or sit back and enjoy it.

Believe it or not, the number one genre in terms of sales is....chill out because anyone can listen from 8 to 80 so to speak.

anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Hope that helps!

Or you could make that list a hell of a lot easier by going to http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html
Plus its got examples of each genre/sub-genre/sub-sub-genre...and what not....mind you there is a lot of biased information but its fairly organized.

Could we please put this list at the top of this thread so nobody else posts it?

I already did and now there's another.
