i am sorry but fire bending is already so cool why is lightning part of it. if anything Lightning should be airbending or some kind of crossover.

But you see we've only just experienced lightning bending. We dont even know if its a fire thing because weve only seen so little of it. Possibly it could just be a trait in zuko's bloodline that just took form in azula and iroh.

Firebenders should not be able to bend lightning. Lightning is electricity, which is completely different from fire. I am angry at the complete dunderheads over at Nick for thinkingDumb Nick People Fire=hot and lightning=hot, therefore Fire=Lightning! Yay!
Sigh.... Maybe the dumb Nick people did realize that, but they didn't want to throw off the whole storyline by adding a new type of bending. I guess that would be kind of a problem.... but they should've just thrown the idea out, then! As if Azula wasn't stupid enough, now we find she bends something that's NOT fire. stare

I am with you guys, Lightning is a whole other element and has to do with electricity which has nothing to do with fire (except for the fact of it being hot). If Lightningbenders where in the show, they would blow the rest of the elements out of the water.

I'm just afraid because it will create a whole new breed of fangirls. Ohh, the horror. Well, okay, fangirls are already bending lightning, but now they have proof that they aren't totally bullshitting it.
I don't know, I don't mind that she can bend lightning. As long as Iroh can as well. >w<

And we've only seen Iroh redirect one bolt of lightning. And he was pretty charred afterwards.

Well, both fire and lightning are plasma, so there might be a connection. There have also been quite a few times where lighting (or electricity in general) has caused massive fires.
So... maybe that would be a good answer?

Er...haven't been on Gaia for awhile really, anyways...
A lot of people at the avatar_fans community on LJ were discussing this and they came to the conclusion that since flames can conduct electricity, being able to use the ligthing and fire are both included in firebending.
Tossing around the idea of energy, plasma, and whatnot...
