About me
My name is Cerceris. I don't have a second name because I don't have a tribe. I am an Aanida, what you could think of as a spider-girl. My four arachnid appendages double as arms and legs, depending on what I need at the moment. They are tipped with sharp claws for gripping and... we'll just leave it at gripping. I don't spin webs, so don't ask. I do have six eyes. Please don't stare. They are all blue and yes, they all work just fine. My hair is red and not long enough for anything interesting. Someday it will get long enough for me to tie it in a knot, or else I will get sick of it and cut it all short. But I like the way Clerise can cover her face with her hair, so maybe not. I am quiet, for the most part. I am patient too. I like to read and play board games, and conversation is nice if you can start one. The games that Clerise teaches me are fun, but I get tired sometimes. I like tea. A lot. I also like my roommate, Clerise.

People I know
RA. The housekeeping AI. It's been nice to me. I like it. But... it hurt Clerise? But it wasn't the AI RA, it was the other RA because the AI RA isn't working properly... I don't know. I have to think about it some more. Clerise. My roommate. Kittyperson. I like her very much. heart She's all fused with evil RA now, but I still like her. Tabitha. Soon to be my English teacher. She's sort of mysterious, but she likes tea and she smiles at me. Akira. A boy with wolf parts. He's sort of shy, but nice. He helped me get some soup for Clerise. Soooooup. He also helped me find my way when I was lost. I think he will make a good guide for the dead someday. Aerin. Mouseyman, dresses pretty. Nurse. Nice nurse. He gave me a hug and said Clerise would be okay.

Possessions
Messenger-style bag - small and black. I keep my stuff in it. White Rabbit - a plush rabbit holding a golden pocket watch. Don't tease me about him. Clothing - a few items of clothing, maybe five different outfits. My body doesn't exude the same oils as a human, and I don't sweat, so changes of clothing aren't very high on my list of priorities unless I spill something on them.

Journals Begin
Record start.
This is the first of presumably more than one recording I'm going to make. Clerise just taught me how to do this. I think it's neat. I think she's neat. She's my roommate. I met her when I woke up from getting my Feed in (that's you). She was poking me with one of my own legs.
We've been... "hanging out" together lately, since classes have yet to begin. Though I'm much better at hanging than she is, since I still have legs free to do things with. Her hair is really pretty. It reminds me of fire, which is now a nice thing. Her eyes remind me of fire too... well, one of them does. The other one is always covered by her hair. She has soft furry black ears and a soft furry black tail. I think she's the softest thing I've ever touched, and [the stuffed rabbit] is really soft.
Clerise teaches me lots of things. She teaches me how to use you, and she teaches me games to play when we go outside. The games are pretty easy to play and to win, but they're still lots of fun. Especially when Clerise wins. I like the way she laughs. It makes me want her to win some more.
I haven't spent very much time exploring the school outside of what Clerise has shown me. I think I might do that later. But right now I want to get some rest. Today's game had a lot of chasing, and I'm tired.
Record stop.

 Record start.
I'm worried about Clerise, still. I haven't seen her in a long time. I hope she's okay. I would be very very sad if anything happened to her, like [half-formed image of violence and pain] - nonono, I don't want to think about that. But I got a little bit of it from RA, when I asked it about Clerise. I think it might have been a mistake. For a computer, it seemed awfully distracted. And then it wouldn't talk to me any more.
I haven't been meeting people. I've figured out how to talk to the walls, though. I can make it so they're easier to grab onto with my claws. I've been walking on the ceilings a lot. Just to make sure I don't run into anyone on my way to get tea and sometimes food. They don't want to bring me tea in my room, I don't know why. Maybe I'm not asking right. I'm afraid to meet people. What if they don't like me? What if they aren't as nice as Clerise? I don't want anyone to hate me. And they can't hate me if they don't know I'm here. But what will I do once classes start? I'll have to meet more people, I guess. Even though I don't really want to. Maybe they'll like me, like Clerise. Even though I'm not good enough for a tribe. Tabitha was nice too, but she doesn't know that I'm [rush of thoughts, a mixture of inadequacy and neglect and displacement]
At least I have [the plush rabbit]. He's nice and soft, sort of like Clerise. And her side of the room still smells like her, a little. Not like she stinks or anything. She smells nice. A little bit like fire, and maybe something else I don't know... it just smells like her, and I like it. Comfortable, like tea. But tea doesn't play games with me, or teach me things to do with my Feed that it learned from Linesleith or figured out on its own. It smells a little bit like rain outside. Maybe I can go on a walk with Tabitha. That would be nice.
I miss Clerise.

 Record start.
Clerise is back, but I'm not any less worried about her. She's changed. Now she's almost two heads taller than me, and she has a wing (I think it might not be on right though) and one of her arms is all black and squiggly and it looks like it hurts a lot. And her teeth are really sharp now, she made herself bleed by accident. And she uses them to make a weird clicking sound that might be a different language but you won't translate it for me. Even her ears look sort of different. [pause as she reaches out to touch one gently] They're still mostly soft, but they're almost sort of like RA's ear fin things now.
[pause]
There's a lot that looks like RA now.
[pause]
If it's done anything bad to her, I'm going to [brief flashes of rage and screaming and pain] be very upset with it.
But it might be some sort of... sickness? That makes you look that way, and hurt that way. And maybe that's why RA is only a hologram now, instead of a real personthing to touch. I hope they don't have to make Clerise into a hologram, with her body floating in a tube somewhere. I like her the way she was. And the way she is, I guess, but I don't like how she hurts. She did say she was in a sort of tube thing, liquidy darkness... it sounded like an artificial growth process of some sort, I think. It would explain how tall she is now, but not really the other things. Unless they messed it up somehow, but she looks so much like RA, and would they really make the same mistake twice?
I should get some food for her, for when she wakes up, but I don't want to move. She's warm and she smells different but still like Clerise and her breathing isn't right but at least it's steady for now. It isn't what I wanted, when I wanted her to come back. I was hoping she would be the same, all in one normal piece instead of these weird new ones and talking about staying together or falling apart. But she's still my Clerise and I'm happy she's back. I'm going to ask the staff what happened, if any of them know. Someone has to. Maybe I could start at the infirmary, she said she was there. Maybe I could start with RA.
Wherever I go, it's going to have to wait until Clerise is awake again. I don't want to leave her alone right now.
Record stop.

You have just returned from getting your roomate food, and moments after setting it down you receive a formal message in your head seemingly from the Academy itself. It is played in your head, with an urgent undertone.
The chemicals in your brain have breeched the maximum capacity for genius for your developmental level. Go to the Infirmary immediatly, so that you may be placed into the Accelerated Convalescence Room to complete your first level of advancement.

Cerceris blinks, startled. It seems that the school is speaking to her through her Feed somehow. The concept of the Academy as a sentient being is interesting, but the message sounds too urgent for her to spend much time thinking about it.
Accelerated Convalescence Room... advancement? Maybe that's what Clerise went through. Maybe I'm going to get a twisty arm and pointy teeth too... well, I did want to go to the infirmary anyway. She casts a fond, worried look at Clerise, still asleep. Impulsively, she leans down and touches her lips softly to the slowly healing gash on the other girl's bottom lip. Get better. I'm going to try to find out what's happened to you.
The Aanida exits the room, following the red trail in her mind's eye. After a moment's thought, she begins composing a message to leave on Clerise's feed in case she wakes up before Cerceris returns from... accelerated convalescence.
Clerise, I got a message telling me to go to the infirmary for advancement. I hope it won't take long. I'm going to find out what happened to you while I'm there. There is soup and tea for you. A boy told me that soup is good for you. I hope you feel better when you wake up.

There is darkness. It is not suffocating or eerie. As a matter of fact, it's rather pleasant. It covers Cerceris like a warm blanket, leaving her mind free of any visual distractions. There is no taste in her mouth, but the comforting scent of Clerise is all around her. A smile plays over her lips. Finally, all is right with the world. She is content and comfortable, wrapped in this warm darkness, and Clerise is nearby and undoubtedly okay. Her arm doesn't hurt her, her teeth are under control, and there isn't a violently insane alien consciousness invading her mind.
Stretching her limbs languorously, Cerceris discovers that the darkness around her is less like layers of blankets and more like a viscous liquid suspending her weightlessly. A lazy wave of her arachnid legs informs her that it entends beyond her reach. The Aanida is unconcerned at this discovery, content to laze about in the warmth of the liquid darkness. It faintly tickles the spines along her arms and legs. She waves them again, not quite giggling at the sensation.
After an indeterminate length of time, her ears pick up a faint tapping sound. Cerceris tilts her head curiously and leans toward the sound, which is growing steadily louder. It soon becomes a rhythmless, desperate pounding. She shies back, alarmed. Something is trying to get into her lovely floaty space, and it frightens her more than it should. I like it here, what are you doing? Her throat seems paralyzed with her sudden panic.
The pounding takes on a decidedly different tone - instead of dull thumps, it has turned into sharp cracking noises. It sounds like metal or wood hitting glass. Something shatters, and the darkness around the Aanida lurches drunkenly. She curls into a frightened ball, spider legs forming a makeshift cage around her soft body as she pours out onto a cold floor. The air seems to strip the heat away from her body, eliciting a gasp. She shivers and curls up tighter, weakly willing the cold to go away.
There is a voice then, an angry one. It is shouting and hissing and making guttural clicking sounds, and a strong hand siezes her. Her mouth opens, but her straining throat seems unable to produce any sound. Terrified, she allows herself to be dangled limply by the single arachnid leg the mysterious hand has taken hold of. What remains of the warm liquid drips onto the floor below her; she can feel the faint heat running in rivulets down her skin, and she can hear the droplets hitting the floor.
The hand sets her delicately on the floor, but its sudden gentleness does little to disarm the panicked Aanida. She retracts her leg as soon as the touch is gone, curling it back around herself. Something clicks on the floor once, and then a hand touches her face. She flinches away, eyes wide and frightened. At least, it feels as though her eyes are open, but she can't see anything. She opens her mouth to cry out in dismay, but again her throat fails her. The hand on her face traces sadly down her cheek, brushing against her mandibles. The taste is startlingly familiar; she recognizes it from just before her trip to the infirmary. Her mouth silently forms the familiar name, and suddenly there is a pressure on her sightless eyes. There is no pain, but a fresh wetness slides down her cheeks. She unconsciously licks her lips as the moisture gathers at the corners of her mouth, then spits at the taste. The pressure repeats itself on her four lower eyes, adding to the slick mess on the Aanida's face.
Clerise's hands finally recede from Cerceris, and she reaches out hopelessly. Wait, please- She drags herself laboriously forward with her arachnid legs, straining forward with her human hands. Suddenly, the Aanida is alone again. She curls back up into her protective ball and sobs noiselessly, the floor cold against her skin. Don't leave me alone...
---
Cerceris woke up shaking from the force of her dream sobs, sheets hopelessly twisted around her. She lay motionless for a moment, absorbing information from her surroundings. She could see. Her head fell to one side, and she studied the texture of the blankets and pillow. Her brain slowly reminded her that she had fallen asleep in the mess hall after eating with Akira. He might have brought her back here, in which case she would have to thank him later. And apologize for her rudeness - she hadn't meant to fall asleep on the table, but the drowsiness had been relentless.
Her breathing had calmed somewhat, and her fists unknotted from the sheets. She was still content to lay in her bed for a moment, digesting her dream. It could probably have been called a nightmare. She would take a look in the library later to see if there were books on dreams and nightmares and what to do with them.
