I was thinking about stuff

Yanno

As opposed to not thinking
(Shut up, Pyre)

And I realized I got a whole lotta memories. Big ones, ones that stand out.

Like when I called my wayward father before I left for college.
Or my sophmore year where I threw my lucky charm into the river.
And all sorts of stuff that defines my life.

What's some of the important memories you have?

Big ones, ones that stand out.

in light of what the post is almost titled, this made me laugh.

as for my memories, i'm having a hard time telling whether the stuff i remember is what i actually remember or whether it's what i'm telling myself was important. you know, first kiss, leaving for college, getting the big scar on my finger... that kind of stuff. is it what automatically comes to mind when someone says "important memories", or am i digging it up because it's SUPPOSED to be important? what if my real memories are getting high and playing cards with my college roommates, or walking back up from the bus station in the cold?

Most of my memories were made while in the hospital.

In fifth grade, I was hospitalized in Chicago for migraines. I was nautious all the time, but the doctors and nurses kept telling me to eat. So, I ate Fruity Pebbles. Yeah. After throwing up Fruity Pebbles for a full week straight, I can't smell the stuff without gagging.

In eighth grade, I was hospitalized once again in Chicago for migraines. That time I met this kid from France and we watched The Sandlot in the movie room. That was the first time I saw that movie. Anyway, as we were watching it the kid kept asking me what certain words meant because he wasn't all that fluent in English, especially not the slang words and such. It was fun.

In eleventh grade, I was hospitalized here in town for pneumonia. There was a huge sign on the door that said that no one but family could come in to visit me. I found out that all my friends are distantly related to me... ninja It was fun because the nurses obviously knew all those people weren't family but they let them in anyway.

This year, I was hospitalized here for migraines. Again. All my friends came at once, and as I was lying in the hospital bed they surrounded me and sang "Kumbaya" or however the hell you spell it. It was freaky. Also, the screw connecting the IV tube and the tube going to the medicine came undone and blood spurted everywhere. It was horrible at the time, but so much fun to look back on...

Other than that, the only major things I remember are getting our dogs and cat and switching over from the hippy-trippy-skippy private Catholic school to public school in sixth grade.

I'm kind of in the same boat as pg - what if the stuff that I think is important really isn't, but I'm just telling myself it is? *shrug*

But anywho.
The two that stand out the most to me revolve around performing, and me realizing that hey, maybe I'm good at it. ;o

When I was 13, in 8th grade, I snagged the lead in one of the three plays we did and had a huuuge solo song with the guy lead. I was uber-nervous 'cause it was my first time since 3rd grade singing in front of an audience by myself, but after our song was over there was a huge roar of applause...and a little later, when I was in the hallway waiting for my next entrance, this gorgeous high-school guy came by and stopped me to tell me I had a beautiful voice. And then I actually gained confidence in my singing abilities. =)

The other one was my junior year in high school, when we did the Wizard of Oz and I was the Wicked Witch. My first appearance was in Munchkinland, and we made it uber-dramatic by having me pop up behind all the ickle little kiddies with fog machines going and shtuff. So yeah, I ran around onstage and scared them all off, taunted Dorothy a bit, and then disappeared into the fog again, all the while cackling evilly. It was a good scene, but I wasn't expecting any real reaction from the audience - so needless to say, on opening night when I made my exit and there was yet another huge roar of applause and cheering, I was thrilled. They liked me. =D

...aaand there's the other shtuff, like first kiss, first job, attempting to run away, etc. But the applause memories are the best.

I have too many memories. In fact, I have a problem with thinking about them too much and not concentrating on the present and future enough.

But I have some good ones. Like the first time I met TM in the bookstore. The first time I thought my heart was going to physically rip in two.

On a happier note, the letter that said I got in law school is a good memory.

Walking across the stage at graduation and how none of us would talk about it for the longest time because we were all scared to death of graduating from college and facing the real world. And the night before when we all hung out trying to squeeze the last little bit of college life out of the year.

Stuff like that. For me it's far less the place and time and more the emotion that goes with it. The underlying sense that something is changing and you're either powerless to stop it, or it's something that you know HAS to change and so you step out bravely into it. Either way, those types of things tend to stand out in my head.

I like my memories. A lot of them would be ******** up, but they still mean a lot to me.

My first kiss with that girl on the back of the bus in kindergarten (Hey, I was curious and she was too) and the subsequent terrible excuse to my mother explaining everything. And my first crush, on a girl named Sophia in the first grade. Then finding out she was the sister of a girl my brother was dating, and feeling really creeped out. She was still cute though. I guess I was never really shy about girls. Suprise there.

Like staying with my cousins when they ran away from home and learning how to fight from them because I was getting bullied at school, then knocking that fat flunky on his a** like 15 times.

Nearly failing school time and time again, and sleeping on the lab tables in biology. And still somehow passing all my classes, getting my way in the end anyway. Then quitting, just to annoy them all.

In fact, I remember when I decided I was going to sleep in the hallways, so cheerleaders would have to jump over me to get across. That was worth it. And then my friend trying to one up me by running and sliding inbetween their legs.

Falling in love with this one girl, and just about everything that happened with her. Holidays, spending summer vacations together, her getting into schools, and college, stuff like that. Actually, some of my best memories are with her. But they're mostly like sitting around all day watching the food network and playing video games, lying around on one another. Or getting ice cream, the totally non important things.

I guess I have a lot of important memories. But it's too long winded to go into.

All of my fondest memories involve seeing a particular movie or playing a particular game.

I don't know if that's good or bad.

I remember the first time I actually saw the Arrowhead. It was a landmark for the entire valley, but I didn't see it. Mom and Dad, on clear days, would point it out, and I'd pretend to see it, but I didn't know what I was looking for. For the longest time, I thought they were referring to a spot between two mountains, which dipped down a bit.

We even drove up to Lake Arrowhead once, and I still had no clue why it was called that.

But then one day, I was outside on a windy spring day, rain during the previous week had prompted a wild growth of tall soft grass on the steep hillside out past the huge intersection of powerlines in the field out behind the community, and I climbed up partway to a ledge, just looking around at the mountains.

And then my eye was snagged by something. A white patch on the mountainside far across the valley, and I realized that the white patch was a huge rock face in the mountain, and it was shapped like a stone arrowhead pointing down.

It just sort of clicked in my brain.

I don't know how important it really is, but that Arrowhead defined the entire valley, and ... the valley defined my childhood.

Lying in the grass with two of my friends and the grass was swaying and we were listening to peter gabriel and yeah, it was just a feeling of total happiness.

When my class went up to Cape Scott, I have a lot of memories there. Like when I just ripped off my pants the second I got there and ran to the ocean honestly not caring what anyone thought.

And running down Mt. Saint Patrick with my friends and jumping over logs and leaping down rocks. It was a 3 hour hike up, and a 45 minute run down rofl

I have a lot of good memories. So many that I often think it would be okay if I never left the house again, I've seen enough of the world.

One that I'm particularly fond of is when I dreamt that I was underwater and saw a sea turtle and the next day I went diving and really saw one for the first time.

When I started smoking.
When I started cutting.
When I stopped cutting.
Standing up to my father.
Getting the courage to talk to The Emo Kid, albeit over the internet and rarely.
All the times I've said something stupid and it turned into a catchphrase with my friends and I.

Sleeping on a park bench in Philly for two months.

Getting into college, against common logic.

Failing out of college.

The ******** up fights I've had with my girlfriend.

Eating lo mein and playing Halo until three in the morning.

Err... I hardly leave the house, and I've never moved in my entire life, and I've never been on a plane, and I've never been to Disneyland... Umm...

Oh.

Last summer, my friend took me to Legoland. It was hilarious, since we were both 15, and there's all this kiddie-stuff there. :] The rides were really tame, but I refused to go on the one that twirled you around and upside down and stuff. I don't like being upsidedown...

At the very end, we went to one of the fifty giftshops and we both got a foam sword, shield, and a little cape. We were sword-fighting the whole way out of the park and into the parking lot. :] A few people stopped and stared, and this one kid had the most priceless expression on his face I've ever seen.

Probably not my best memory, but the first that comes to mind. ^^

i once got my aunt to rough up a school bully after i had stood up to her. she never messed with my friend again and i made her feel liek if you just stand up for yourself anythign is possible. Probably false hope, but it was nifty :]

that and beating upa neighbor boy cause her was trying to shoot a puppy with a b-b gun.

taking pictures of DC and it's nifty crazy people and odd things that walk by.

meeting the love of my life only to realize that love isn't all you need to be happy (maybe a bit of mental stability should be thrown in there).

camping at the seashore and loosing one of my little plastic cowboys int he surf.

the day i caught 14 frogs in a bucket.

when i had a fanboys and enemies at an old forum when i was 13.

thinkign the thing that put me to sleep instantly changed my teeth to silver.

the smell of my old house when it rained.

leaving out the side door into the forest.

catching butterflies by hand off the tree in my front yard.

the day my doxy died.

and maybe the last day i had at my parochial high school, i was stilla bit sad even though i despised it. and i knew that i couldn't truely hate everythign about it.

but these are all pretty much useless to everyone else. it's just teh sort of thing that makes my heart feel a little stronger, maybe.

Wow, that's a lot of memories.

I've still got a lot more world to see, comparing with everyone else in this thread. Maybe time spent on the internet is time not spent in the world... sweatdrop

I remember moving. 8 years ago our family moved across the country, to Canada's west coast. I was pretty indifferent at the time, which is wierd. I guess, though, I've never been too big on caring about things that I can't change. I know my limits. o.o Plus I wasn't too close to my friends, just as I'm not now. Shifting social groups isn't a big thing when it happens.

I remember, very vaguely, how my father apparently spoke only French to me for the first 4 years of my life. All my family members are native English-speakers, but he wanted me to learn French, which was his second language, as well as he did, so he spoke French to me until I started school, and he put me in French Immersion (basically, a 100% French class). Same story for my brother.

I remember those things that you just don't regret, like learning French. Also, I remember the conversation with my parents when I brought up that this year, I was old enough to play in the school orchestra (grade 4), and we agreed that I would learn the violin. I'm still in the school orchestra in grade 11; next year I'll be the concertmaster in all likelihood. I'll never regret that simple conversation with my parents, when I was too young to even understand.

I remember when my friends and I started a band. It's just for fun, like 99% of high school bands, but oh, what fun. Same friends that I started playing The Game with. (losethegame.com) And yes, I just lost the game.

Oh! I remember when I got my SNES. whee XMas '95. Damn was I excited when my dad showed it to me. I mean, seriously, my first console. I still have it. Some of my strongest childhood memories are games like StarFox, Disney's Goof Troop, and Home Alone.
