Aeris/Aerith

Aeris' name is really Aerith. But in Japanese, they can't pronounce the "th" sound, so they use "s" instead. 3nodding
At least that's what I've heard.
So it's correct either way. 3nodding *personally prefers Aeris over Aerith*

Taylor_Highwind takes the cake. ^_^
The "th" sound doesn't exist in Japanese. So, they have to write/pronounce the name with an "s" instead. -However-, in the official Japanese strategy guide, all of the characters names are written in romanized characters (our alphabet instead of Japan's), and her name is actually spelled "Aerith", though in the game, in Japan's alphabet, they use the "s".
It's my guess that because the "s" was used in-game, the translators overlooked the fact that it was not intended to be spelled that way. So, they chose "Aeris".

Aeris' name can be spelled one of two ways, as Taylor pointed out in her post. Her name is mostly thought to be a play on the word "Earth" to convey her close relationship with the planet, although the Hebrew word for flower, "Eryth," is also very suitable for Aerith.
Funny thing about me, is that I pronounce it as Aeris, but I type it as Aerith for the most part. razz
Usually, I only find Aerith's name mispelled in really, really bad fanfiction, where the spelling in general is bad, and grammatical errors run rampant across the page. Lots of them are posted at FanFiction.Net, a.k.a. the "Pit," but there are plenty of good fics there too.
I've also seen people in this guild spell her name incorrectly, although I do believe that the most bastardized spelling of her name that I have ever seen is probably "Aereis" or something like that. It was something that made me have to stop and think a bit to recognize it. Everytime I see her name mispelled, my face twitches somewhere, usually around the eyebrows.
Sephiroth also suffers the same dilema, as he has a rather uncommon name as well. Him and Yuffie both.
What's even more sad is that the people who play the game constantly see how the character's name is spelled correctly, yet they fail to spell it as shown onto their computer. sweatdrop I usually tolerate it if it's from younger fans, though, since not everyone around age twelve or younger is a spelling genius.

Also one spelling Ive seen people make, which is a big one but pronounced the same way is Aries/Ares, referring to the God of War, though its very off on that meaning. When truly the meaning is referring to her relationship with 'earth'. Thats my theory on it because of all of her abilities are land oriented. Such as Earth Protector.

I can't remember where I heard it from & I'm not sure if anyone's already said this or not...but I heard that Aeris' name in Japan (when it's translated into English) is Aerith. But, for the English version of the game, they changed her name to Aeris. I'm not completely sure if this is right or not b/c I can't remember if I got this info from a reputable source.

As everyone has been saying, they don't have the "th" sound in Japanese. So its pronounced like an S. And anyone in America that sees the name Aerith pronounces the "th" sound. Its also like Sephiorth's name. They says Sephirosu, in Japan and we say Sephiroth. 3nodding One other misconception I can point out about the difference between the American and Japanese language is, they don't use L's. In Cloud's name they say Croudo. They don't pronounce L's like L's, they use the "r" sound. 3nodding

Well, supposedly the 'L' and 'R' sound in Japanese is, like, half way between both of them. At least that's what I read on the internet (it doesn't make much sense to me either). So it's not a full 'R' sound in Japanese. As for Aeris/Aerith, I don't know where Aerith came from. The world may never know....

During some of the translations when being brought to America, for the games that included Aerith, was spelled differently essentially because of how it's pronounced. Technically the Japanese version of Aerith sounds exactly how you'd pronounce Aeris. So, this really isn't wrong with the exception of spelling. Of course, people get all beant out of shape over it, but that translation was allowed since it is basically the same thing. I hope this helps. I will look for the links and post them here that explains this little fopaa, just a little better than I have. Hope this helps!
