Soquili’s Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) 2026 Raffle Starts: September 30th, 2026 at 12:01am EST
Ends: October 7th, 2026 at 11:59pm EST
It's been a while since we've done this, hasn't it? The shop hiatus in 2023 certainly threw off our groove, but thanks to our amazing colorists for bearing with me on a little last minute planning, we're returning with our Truth and Reconciliation Day raffle!
What is Truth and Reconciliation Day? It's a day dedicated to the children in unmarked and/or mass graves across Canada - victims to residential schools. Originally starting as a movement called Every Child Matters, people pressed the government and churches to allow the search of the mass burial areas for passed on victims of the residential school system - a search which continues to this day. It is also a day to show respect to those who have survived residential schools and the many horrors Indigenous children faced after being pulled away from their families.
Orange Shirt Day, which is what September 30th has been for years now, is a day where everyone wears an orange shirt to pay homage to Phyllis (Jack) Webstad whose shiny new orange shirt had been taken from her on her first day at residential school. There are many other symbols that represent this day, a few of which you can read about here.
If you'd like to learn more about Truth and Reconciliation Day, you can visit the Government of Canada website.

Kwey kakina,
Just a little Vis Corner Moment.
I want to give my thanks to Nyoko for helping me run this, this year. The last few years were tough (null 2023 when we were not running new events) and Septembers were not kind to my family.
I want to say thank you to all those of you who have asked me over the years to run this again when it was easier. And again, thank you so much to Nyoko for stepping in and hosting. Another thank you to the colourists who have submitted art for this, and for those who couldn't this year but were supportive and wanting to see Truth and Reconciliation come back this September.
My mother and her parents were not victims of the schools but they were victims in a way that my Nanny had to strip her identity and ignored passing her teachings on to her children. My mother had the belief she was Metis (First Nations/European mix) but only a few years ago did she find out she was a much higher percentage. Her mother and grandmother burned their records to flee the government from placing them in residential schools. The residential schools wiped the specific Huron teachings, beliefs and languages from history...
Her father's side were nonreserve kids that lived off grid and were able to live off the land and pass down their teachings.
I am Métis... And I have many friends who were raised by those with exceptional trauma that stems from their upbringing in the Residential School Systems. I proposed this raffle idea of it being foal-heavy not only for those poor children in those graves but also to those children who had to suffer, and who had to raise children while they were working on healing traumas of the past. I know these are pieces of art but the fact that we can spread awareness to this cause each year means a lot to me even in this small community.
Again. Migwech.
-- Vis.
