Somniorum hadn’t attempted to test his skills with the bow on any of his unfriendly new acquaintances, and if he was to be honest with himself he wasn’t certain that he would ever be able to fire at something living. Still, that didn’t change the fact that each shot required him to achieve a degree of concentration that otherwise eluded him. As much as he despised practicing in his uniform it felt like a skill that might be important, at some point anyway, even if it necessitated putting distance between himself and any other people who might be roaming around. Explaining his presence to the regulars without giving them a thousand reasons to realize who he was was just one of many possible hurdles and it was for this reason that the page found himself in a remote corner in one of the ubiquitous local parks.

A printed target stapled to the broadest of the trees had proven an adequate point of focus for each of his arrows, though he had been less than satisfactory, many of his attempts having flown shy. At least he’d managed not to send anything into the more vulnerable parts of the grove.

With summer nearing its end and nightfall arriving a little earlier each evening, Piper was determined to make the most of the remaining warm weather. She’d taken her motorcycle out beyond Destiny City in search of winding roads, switchbacks, and scenic views that weren’t interrupted by stoplights every few miles. By the time she decided to head back, the sun was sinking toward the western horizon, painting the sky in warm pink and yellow-orange hues.

As she passed a park along the route home, something unusually light colored caught her attention through the trees. It was only a fleeting glimpse, visible in the narrow spaces between the trunks as she passed by, but it was enough to pique her curiosity. The safer, more practical option would have been to simply continue home, but Piper was rarely one to pass up an opportunity for a little excitement.

She’d slowed down to a more reasonable speed before turning into the nearby parking lot and cutting the engine. After lowering the kickstand, Piper dismounted, then removed her helmet to let her hair fall free.

Although there was the possibility that what she saw was a civilian out walking their dog after a particularly long day at work, Piper was willing to bet that if the person was powered, they were likely to be a White Moon Senshi or possibly a Knight like she was. It had been some time since she’d last powered up, more than a year at least. Other than Antisana, she honestly couldn’t remember the last time she’d actually introduced herself to someone new.

With her helmet tucked under one arm, Piper followed one of the park’s paths toward where she thought she had seen the person standing. It didn’t take long for the trees to part enough for her to spot a figure ahead. Clad in pastel cloths that looked ready for a formal event, or perhaps a wedding, she found it difficult to tell if they were a Senshi, a Knight, or neither while standing behind them.

Piper stopped at a comfortable distance away and waited, her shoulder leaning against the rough tree bark, watching quietly as they drew and released another arrow at a paper target several yards away.

Only after he released his next shot did she finally power up. Her motorcycle uniform was replaced by an unfortunately scantily clad uniform suited for a Page of Ganymede.

She stepped forward, clapping her hands together in a quiet applause when she sensed a friendly aura radiating from what she determined was a knight like her. “That last one was impressively close.”

“Gah!” In that moment Somniorum felt a sudden and thunderous awareness that he shouldn’t have allowed himself to become so intensely focused on his practice that the area’s activities and auras and faded into the background. The presence of a new energy signature probably shouldn’t have been as startling as it had been.

This one, at least, was friendly.

Or allied, hopefully.

The page still wasn’t entirely clear on the particulars there. Theoretically they should be allies, but theoretically people shouldn’t feed planets to cosmic horrors but that logic didn’t hold up in the reality in which he’d found himself. Humans were terrifying and brought far more traditional varieties of monster than he’d be willing to accept without having borne witness to their presence.

“Er…hello…thank you.”

He’d never seen a uniform quite like the one the stranger wore, she clearly wasn’t a senshi and based upon the unfamiliar symbol adorning her clothing he figured she was another knight. It looked like it would be a bit cold, and though he couldn’t claim any envy for the style, it seemed like it would be somewhat more physically comfortable than the slightly claustrophobic suit that was eternally determined to wrap itself around him.

“I’m just…practicing. I’m not sure how much I can use it in battle but…it helps me calm down. Focus. All that.” He gestured around him at the imaginary distractions. “I’m going to take the target down before I go.”

“Sorry,” a quiet chuckle escaped her.

Maya’s shoulders rose and fell in a small shrug, “I didn’t mean to startle you.” Then again, it could hardly be helped. Even if she had said hello while still a civilian, the result would likely have been the same; at least this way he should be able to tell she was friendly.

Nonetheless, she kept a distance between them, choosing to lean her shoulder against the rough bark of a tree about eight feet away. “Why are you unsure how much you can use it in battle? Isn't your knight weapon?” She held out her small bouquet of golden Gingko leaves for him to see. A trinket by comparison, but maybe his prince or princess was kinder to their knights and gifted them useful things.
