What US states have rodeos?

Biggest Rodeos in the World | Sports Planning GuideRodeos are held in all 50 U.S. states, with the strongest traditions and largest events centered in the West, Southwest, and Midwest. The sport's hub is heavily concentrated in the "dry rectangle" of states ranging from Texas to the Dakotas and west to the Pacific Northwest.

A breakdown of top-tier rodeo states highlights the following hotspots:

Texas: Known as the Rodeo Capital of the United States, rodeo is the state sport. Key events include the massive Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and The American Rodeo held in Arlington.

Wyoming: Home to the "Daddy of 'em All," the Cheyenne Frontier Days, which is the largest outdoor rodeo in the world.

Nevada: Features the Reno Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo (NFR), the premier championship event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) held in Las Vegas.

Arizona: Hosts major winter/spring events like the Tucson Rodeo (La Fiesta de los Vaqueros) and the Arizona Invitational Black Rodeo in Scottsdale.

Montana & South Dakota: Known for deep cowboy culture and major summertime events like the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale (MT) and the Black Hills Roundup (SD).

Beyond the American West, rodeo circuits—such as the Mid-States Rodeo Association—are active in the Midwest and East Coast.

Even states with strong agricultural and livestock industries far from the frontier, like Florida (e.g., the Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee) and New Jersey, host localized rodeos year-round.

What are Mexican rodeos called?

TPRMexican rodeos are called charrería.
The events themselves are known as charreadas (or sometimes charros), while traditional Mexican cowboys and cowgirls are called charros and charras.
The distinct, smaller variations often focused on bull riding are known as jaripeos.

These events are deeply rooted in Mexican history, dating back to 16th-century cattle herding traditions. While similar to American rodeos,
charrerías place a heavier emphasis on dressage,
equestrian grace, and traditional attire.

Core Elements of a Charreada:
The Venue: These events are hosted in specialized arenas called lienzo charros.

Escaramuza:
A highlight of the charreada, featuring women (charras) in colorful, ruffled Adelita dresses performing precision horseback riding in synchronized patterns.

Competitions:
Events test traditional ranch skills such as Coleadero (steer tailing), Manganas (roping a horse or mare from a distance), and the thrilling Paso de la Muerte (Pass of Death), where a rider leaps from their own horse onto a wild, bareback mare.

Atmosphere: Charreadas are heavily festive, typically accompanied by live mariachi bands, folk dancing, and traditional Mexican food.

Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage,
charrería is proudly celebrated not only across Mexico
but also by Mexican-American communities
throughout the United States.

Rodeo clowns

Historically known as bullfighters, barrelmen,
or rodeo protection athletes—
are specialized rodeo performers who keep
crowds entertained and protect bull riders
from dangerous livestock.
Today, the role is often split into comedic
entertainers (barrelmen)
and athletic protection specialists (bullfighters),
though both require extreme agility and courage.

History and EvolutionEarly 1900s:
Promoters hired versatile cowboys to fill lulls between events with lighthearted antics and jokes.

1920s: The introduction of aggressive Brahma bulls raised the stakes, shifting the job toward rider safety and distraction.

1930s: Performer Jasbo Fulkerson introduced the wooden barrel as a safe mobile refuge, creating the iconic "man in the barrel" role.

Modern Roles

Bullfighters: Elite athletes on foot who physically intercept and distract bulls the moment a rider is bucked off.

Barrelmen: Entertainers who use a large, padded steel barrel as both a comedic prop and a protective shield that riders and clowns can duck behind.

Outfit and Gear: Traditional baggy clothes evolved to help performers move freely and avoid being pinned by horns, paired with modern protective vests and padding
