Kylian had, for the most part, been lucky enough to avoid any of the strange nonsense people talked about in Destiny City. Sure, he'd heard it discussed, but it felt, to him, like people were really exaggerating the frequency of Generalized Weird s**t. clearly, Destiny City was no weirder than parts of New York, and DC just thought it was special the way every city did, when the ones justified in feeling that way were actually few and far between.

At least, that was what he had been telling himself.

The problem was, apparently he had gotten too comfortable in that.

He wasn't entirely sure what was going on in front of him, if he was honest. He'd decided to take a slightly longer, but prettier, route back to the inn from his hookup's house--staying the night was not in, and there would be absolutely zero cuddling, gross--and it had taken him through a lovely park that was open after dark, with pretty lights going down the path.

and he'd come across two people--one standing, with long hair that rivaled his own, dressed in an admittedly cute little black-and-blue outfit; and the other slumped over, looking barely conscious.

That seemed ominous, somehow.

Kylian stood, frozen, heart hammering in his chest.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" He demanded, though as soon as the words were out of his mouth he regretted them. s**t, he did not want to attract attention, for once, and yet here he was, doing it.

Ilmari really needed a win.

Unfortunate, he thought, that his default state in so many things, so much of the time seemed to be <******** me, I really need a win for once”—but so things had gone since the start of the summer. (Honestly, since a little bit before then, too. Baz’s parents had been on so much bullshit about trying to push him into doing all kinds of things that they seemed to think, without even asking how he felt in any way that he acknowledged as valid, would be better for him and it was getting a bit difficult to keep everything straight.)

Most of the time, Ilmari felt perfectly content with just draining energy. He could cover for everyone on the team, that way. If he did somehow allow any lapses to escape his notice, then it was probably fine because Ms. Hestia was also incredibly on top of her duties (a true role model in all things related to being a senshi and serving the Negaverse, always). But the dog days of summer were upon Destiny City, and with the stifling humidity came a claustrophobic sense that Ilmari wasn’t doing enough. Needed to do something bigger—something more—to prove that he wasn’t some weak b***h who could get pushed around by Order.

Picking a civilian to steal a starseed from was easy. Ilmari didn’t recognize them, but they were stupid enough to be alone, in the middle of the night, completely absorbed in their phone. Maybe they were playing one of those stupid mobile games like Pokémon Go. Whatever the case, they didn’t notice Ilmari sweeping in until he shoved his hand into their chest. In turn, however, Ilmari didn’t notice that they were not alone until he heard a voice behind him.

But—wait, he knew that voice. Or he was pretty sure he did.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Ilmari smirked. Oh, yes, he had known that voice.

“It’s called starseeding,” he said silkily, pulling his hand out and letting the civilian hit the pavement with a dull, meaty thud. Turning toward Kylian with the air of a spider who very badly wanted to entice someone into her parlor, Ilmari held out his hand and showed off the little glittering gem. “Beautiful, isn’t it? It’s something even you could do, if you wanted.”

All Ilmari would’ve needed to do was take Kylian to a General-Sovereign. If he had a senshi starseed, then the Negaverse gained a new senshi like Ilmari and Ms. Hestia. If not, then they got a new agent like Ms. Jadarite or Litharge. Either way, a distinct win for the Negaverse (and by extension for Ilmari himself).

Stay calm! Stay calm! Stay calm! Stay calm! Andromeda repeated these things in her head as she sprinted as quickly as she could. Vivian had just been walking home when she'd seen Kylian ahead of her; his hair made him delightfully unmistakable. The problem was, when she'd been about to call out to him, she noticed Ilmari. And she knew exactly what Ilmari was doing. She'd run to a nearby alley between buildings to transform, and now she was running as quickly as she could to stop Kylian from being Ilmari's next victim.

"HEY! BASKET HAIR!" Andromeda shouted out as she jumped up, twisting her torso and rearing an arm back with her fist clenched. "Get away from him!" As she came down she threw herself forward, hoping to distract Ilmari from Kylian and also punch him as hard as her body would allow her in the process. Maybe if she was lucky she could save two lives tonight.

Whether she hit Ilmari or not, a desperate look was sent Kylian's way as she landed on her feet. "Just run, Kylian," she begged him before turning back to the corrupted senshi. She balanced her weight with her feet spread carefully, her posture at the ready to fend him off, just as Maus had taught her.

It had been time to check in on Andromeda, and by check-in Creedence meant stalk Vivian and see if she was being a FailSenshi in need of some special training. And the answer was...

From on high, the cat let out a gusty sigh and bapped at the bronze horse's head. "Well, you can't expect people to learn to be a proper caster in a month." It was said in a tone that made it clear that you definitely could expect that, but that she was willing to be generous to her latest sprout. But, once again, Andromeda did show initiative!

Tail lashing she watched to see how things would play out. A chaos super wasn't as big of a problem as an eternal but the advantage was still pretty steep. She might have to laser beam from the peanut gallery this time. Especially if NPC Boy didn't get out of the0hey wait a minute!

Squinting, Creedence leaned forward and urged the spiritual version of a yellow exclamation point to float above her head. Run and hide you stupid! Beautiful! Newbie!

Oh.

Oh, holy ********, that poor person just--dropped. Limp and still.

Kylian had seen perhaps too many corpses in his time. His parents', first. Aunt Marjolane's. None of them quite this fresh, but the unnatural stillness was still something that stuck in his memory. And here it was again, right in front of his face.

"No, gross, why would I want to do that?" He was already stepping back, putting distance between himself and the (admittedly pretty) homicidal stranger, while he tried to pull together what was happening in front of him--it was possible to...pull something out of someone and they just...died.

Silent. Immediate.

.....Was that what had happened to Aunt Marjolane?

He didn't have time to think. There was someone else on the scene, someone running in to throw herself into a fight--oh, this was the magic bullshit everyone talked about, wasn't it.

And apparently the redhead in the cute dress knew him. Knew his name, at least. for a moment, he considered wracking his memory to try and figure out who it was, but he decided that in that specific moment, he didn't care.

He gave her a nod and darted away, because he did not want to find out how the a*****e in black responded to having his offer denied, and at least there was an alleyway he could duck down.

He paused to catch his breath, and pressed a hand to his chest.

"What the ******** was that," he said, softly, even though he knew there was no one to hear him.

Kylian’s reaction was distinctly not what Ilmari wanted to hear or see from him.

They knew each other. Not like this, not yet, but as Baz and Kylian, they’d slept together last year, shortly after Kylian had come to Destiny City. They were as close to friends as Baz got with anyone who wasn’t either part of his team in the Negaverse (or a respected colleague from an entirely different team), one of his precious few neighbors like Shuangxu and his oversized guard-dog of a boyfriend who weren’t completely awful, technically one of Baz’s siblings more so than a friend, or one of his special friends online, the ones who also had “I’m not endorsing anything dangerous or self-harming, this is just my venting space, leave me alone” disclaimers all over their BlueSky and tumblr accounts.

“It’s not gross,” Ilmari protested, following Kylian as he stepped back and ignoring the flare-up of two nearby Order auras that otherwise might have told him that this would probably not be going his way tonight. “It’s power, and sure, it’s overwhelming at first. But you don’t have to—”

And that was when the fist came flying at Ilmari’s face.

EXCUSE YOU,” he snapped, staggering back a couple steps, and glaring in Perfectly Justified Outrage at the ginger-haired Order senshi, whoever she thought she was. Cute dress, admittedly. Lucky for her, she had the legs and the slender figure who could wear some poofy jellyfish-looking little number like that without it making her look too big. God, Ilmari could imagine how some of the fuller-figured senshi in this town would have looked in that dress, and he did. not. like. it. “Don’t they teach you any manners at the White Moon Academy for useless screw-ups?”

All thoughts of Kylian temporarily forgotten, Ilmari focused on the little redhead senshi. “The summer heat’s really getting to you, isn’t it,” he said, and blew her a kiss to summon up his magic.

Quote:
Super Sailor Scout Attack: Chaste Restraint.
Ilmari blows a kiss at his intended targets. Instantly, they are hit with a moderate chill that places them into a chaste state of mind and resets them to a pure, unblemished state by cooling their passions, dulling their emotions, and strongly urging them to exercise restraint in their actions, making it more difficult for them to attack. This can be distracting and can leave enemies feeling dazed, stunned, or without any drive. The chill is illusory; it does not deal damage. Ilmari can choose up to three targets within 15 feet. The effects last for 35 seconds, and Ilmari may use this attack two times per battle.

"You're excused," Andromeda shot back casually. Her eyes narrowed as she took a moment to pull her gloves off, tucking them away behind her and then bringing her hands up again and balling them into fists. Kylian had run away, and that was a huge relief. Her heart was racing as she stared down the stronger senshi. He felt a little out of her league, but thankfully not as much as Hestia was. It's okay, it's fine. This wasn't terrifying at all. Kylian got away and that, truly, was all that really mattered here. Suddenly she stared incredulously at the other senshi. Was he seriously? "Manners? Me? You just killed someone?!" Like, DUH? HELLO? "If anyone's the screw up, it's not me. It's the one who went to Disneyland and stole the collar off the Evil Queen's costume."

Wait. What was he doing? Summer heat? No, she was fine. Why was he--oh no. Nonono! Andromeda inhaled with a sharp gasp and tried to leap back away from him as he blew a kiss in her direction. She didn't know what exactly was about to happen, but something about that did not--did not what? Her eyes fluttered as she stumbled in her step, her arms relaxing a moment until she suddenly shuddered and grasped her own arms to huddle within herself. When did it get so cold?

There was a slow but brief glance over her shoulder, one last check that Kylian really had run away. Good. Hm? What was that feeling... was someone else here? Someone familiar... was someone here to help her? She looked upward, as if searching, but seemed none too concerned by whatever she didn't find before looking back to the blonde senshi again, looking him up and down with an impassive look. Oh... I'm in over my head this time, huh? She thought to herself as she was left with no choice but to plant her feet in place and try to stay steady.

"That," a voice rang out in the alleyway, coming from...his feet? "That was a Chaos D-lister trying to use you, either as a lackey or a battery."

A passing car lit up the alley, revealing a dark, fluffy cat with a star on its forehead. "But you know what? There's a secret third option. So let me ask you, Kylian, do you want to be strong?" And with those words something else appeared by the cat, something that didn't quite glow but also held a light that meant something more. Meant something for him.

Or at least, who he could be.

There was a cat. A cat talking to him. Either Kylian had accidentally taken something he wasn't expecting to or he was having the absolute weirdest night of his life. And given that this felt far too grounded to be a trip, Kylian was going to accept the second premise.

It took him a moment of blinking to process that the talking cat had asked him a question.

"Do I want to be....strong?"

Did he?

His first, immediate answer was no. He did not want to be strong. He wanted to run his little inn for a few more months and then decide if he was going home ot New York or staying in Destiny City. He wanted to be cute, and artsy, and hte kind of pretty boy big, strong men scooped up and carried around.

But he thought of that body.

And he thought of Aunt Laney.

And something angry twisted up in his chest.

"Yes. Yes, I think I do."
