Name: Magnesse Melrose (her parents were hoping so hard for a boy that they had a name picked out...and had to "adjust" the back end to make it a girl's name)

Nickname: Any permutation of "Mag" or "Meg" is preferable to her actual name (Mag, Mags, Maggie, Meg, Megs, Meggie, etc)

Gender/Pronoun: She/her

Age: 16

Birthday: April 20, 2010

Sign: Aries/Taurus cusp!

Gemstone: Amber

Blood Type: (Optional)

Fav. Food: Cherry limeade, cherry soda, cherry syrup, maraschino cherries...any candy-sweet cherries or candy-sweet cherry flavored drink, as long as it's not a medicinal cherry flavor

Hated Food: Any form of preserved herring can die in a fire

School/Occupation: Crystal Academy (she boards to be away from her mother and take advantage of her father's desire to Keep Up Appearances)

Hobbies:

Trashy Romance Novels
Despite being functionally the child of a trashy romance novel (albeit one with a very unhappy ending), Mags has a fondness for trashy romance novels, the trashier, the better. Because she doesn't want to deal with the social hassle of having them in a dorm room she has to share with another human being, she borrows them from the library, reads them as quickly as possible in private while keeping them in her school bag, and then promptly returns them from the library early, if at all possible. Mags isn't entirely sure why they appeal. Maybe she wants to judge the characters, maybe she simply wishes to live in their world, but, either way, she can escape from the unpleasant reality that is her life while within the pages of this guilty pleasure.

Poetry
Mags first got interested in poetry through classes, and started to scribe down her thoughts as poems she keeps in a separate pocket notebook she hides at the bottom of her school bag. It's not that her poems are bad, per se, it's just that Mags feels insecure about the poetry in some way she can't fully articulate. Published poetry is a beautiful expression of the human mind and soul, even when it comes from a human trash heap; Mags' poetry is, from her perspective, amateurish drivel that allows her a moment to get certain thoughts she'd rather not publicly express out of her head and onto a page that nobody else gets to see.

Singing
Mags is a pretty decent singer, quite good, really, and enjoys singing, as well. What started as "a good way for any young lady to express herself in a genteel and refined manner, girls" led into joining the school choir, where Mags sings mezzo-soprano. She enjoys the challenge of singing a piece well and with feeling (and also enjoys the praise people give her based purely on her sound, not her looks, not her dumpster fire of a family background and upbringing). Preferred pieces are operatic and other classical pieces.

Figure Drawing
There's something sort of peaceful about sitting in a studio, drawing the person before you in all honesty. Consequently, the contents of her school bag include a sketchbook she's slowly filling up with figure drawings and studies of the human body and how it moves. There's a kind of honesty in drawing the world around her, particularly the people, and doing it in such a way that people have to admire the frank humanity of the piece.

Cosmetics
They look so pretty, ok, despite the fact that Mags is painfully aware that the stuff she actually wants that looks the best on her is wildly out of her pay range. If she ever got the opportunity to get her hands on a nice set of cosmetics, that'd be fantastic, but, for now, she subsists off cheap products from the drugstore worn at times that won't get her in trouble for wearing them. Besides, she can use cosmetics to cover up her freckles, and make her look pretty enough that a person could forget about how utterly flat-chested and coltish Mags looks.

Virtues:

Hardworking
Mags works hard at what she does. She doesn't like half-assing things, and is painfully aware that good things won't come if one sits and waits, fluttering their eyelashes and hoping a hero will come and fix things. If she's here, she's here to work, not goof around.

Meticulous
Mags is pretty careful and detail-oriented. As the saying goes, "the devil's in the details," as has been so painfully illustrated since her conception. She pays close attention to information, and organizes and compartmentalizes it as it comes in. As a result, she doesn't lose track of things very easily, and hates missing out on any crucial information that could be the dividing line between success and failure.

Driven
Mags is, as stated before, aware that good things don't come to those who sit around wishing on stars. And, coming from a rather unpleasant family she'd very much like not to belong to, she is VERY aware that, if she wants to leave and lead her own life, able to at last afford everything she's ever desired, she can't afford to sit around waiting. Extra credit homework, to get into better classes to get into a better school, ideally with a scholarship of some sort? Done. As many working hours as she can take as soon as she's allowed to get a job? Check. Money scrupulously squirreled away for a future that doesn't involve her family? Checkmate. Toward that end, not only does Mags work hard, she's also very careful to only spend what allowance is gifted her as strictly necessary, and she got her father's lawyer's assistance in setting up a bank account her mother does not have access to, which is fine by her father and his lawyer, as that means less for them to have to interact with Mags' mother.

Honest
Rather surprisingly, Mags is a pretty honest person. Possibly to the point of being blunt, but she's generally a pretty honest person. Honest about how things suck, honest about how she feels, honest about her own shortcomings. From her perspective, there's no real benefit in lying, particularly as her mother's attempt to lie about Mags' gender prior to Mags' birth, solely to keep Mags' father involved enough to marry her, probably did more to ******** up Mags' life. Sure, a person can get in trouble for being overly honest, but, from Mags' perspective, the fallout from being caught out in a lie is far worse than just being honest in the first place. Plus, there's something kinda nice, and absolutely useful, about being considered an honest person.

Flaws:

Insecure
Mags is deeply insecure. Hard not to be, with two manipulative parents, her mother living in denial that the relationship would ever end (and blames Mags for destroying the relationship), and her father was never going to stick around for her mother, but would have sought to gain sole custody if he thought Mags would be worth keeping (viz, if Mags was born a boy). Consequently, she's spent her life being criticized by her mother for being the wrong gender, for not being pretty enough, for not being smart enough. No matter how much she tries to drown out the gremlins in her mind, the damage of 16 years of this kind of emotional abuse has done its work, and Mags privately sits somewhere between simply not thinking she's good enough and actually hating herself. While she doesn't express this very openly, someone triggering this insecurity might find Mags can be a perfectly snappy and bitter person.

Judgy
Perhaps as a self-defense mechanism against her mother, Mags has turned her pain and insecurity into a tendency to be judgmental. Some things are off-limits, like gender, sexuality, race, and disability, but your appearance, your personality, your poor life choices are all fair game, and Mags will tell you just how much she thinks you suck. Mags would feel more upset about how this pushes people away from her, but Mags also feels like she's less emotionally vulnerable if she doesn't have too many people close to her who can hurt her.

Jaded
Mags sees the world through jade-tinted lenses. Her mother was never going to be good enough for her father, and her father was always going to look for a reason to weasel his way out of a relationship with her mother. There's always a selfish angle, and it's better to not get one's hopes up, whether this be politicians, business managers, lovers, or friends. It will always hurt more to believe in them, and then to have that belief rewarded with betrayal, so it's better to have never believed at all. Between the jaded views of the world and her judgy nature, Mags doesn't have a lot of friends. And, at least on the surface, Mags tells herself it's fine, that way, nobody can hurt her if she doesn't let herself believe that anyone would be interested in her for her.

Rebellious
Mags can play the good girl as need be, but Mags isn't the sort to sit around and wait for good things to happen when she can go in and push for what she wants, even if it means upsetting the authority figures around her. She regularly snipes back at her mother, hurling the inflicted pain back in her mother's face, is brutally honest with her judgy opinions, and works hard for the life she wants, damn the consequences, damn what anyone else wants from her. After all, her mother wants her to cultivate a better relationship with her father in hopes that it'll mean good things for her mother, her father is more or less giving her nice things in case he needs her for business or political purposes, and Mags...honestly wants to get the heck away from both parents. Authority figures may say they want the best for her, but seldom do they actually mean it in any way that actually takes her wishes and desires into account, and Mags isn't about to start trusting authority figures now.

Family

Mother
Makayla Melrose (36) is Mags' mother, and the only parent present for all of Mags' life. She is a selfish, lazy, manipulative person with delusions of grandeur, who felt she was entitled to a better life with her well-born Swedish boyfriend. She was so convinced she would have a baby boy that would basically guarantee said Swedish boyfriend would stick around that she made zero attempt to confirm the baby's gender while the baby was in utero. Being abandoned after Mags' birth brought out her abusive tendencies, and Makayla has inspired nothing in Mags, except for a desire to get the heck away from Makayla. Makayla has worked a lot of different jobs since Mags was born, but the most consistent ones have been gas station attendant and bartender at a bar run by an old friend (Sherry) who mostly felt bad about Makayla's daughter growing up in such difficult circumstances. Makayla has an unfortunate tendency to bring home wealthy-looking bar patrons she's hoping to seduce in a vain attempt to get the life she feels entitled to, which has not made Mags feel happier about spending any amount of time at home.

Father
Magnus Bengtsson (40) is Mags' estranged father, a well-born Swede for whom Makayla was only ever meant to be a fun romp in the States. Getting her knocked up wasn't in the calculus, through the promise that the baby would be a boy was worth sticking around, just so he'd get a son and heir he could take home to Sweden and use as an excuse to perpetuate his playboy lifestyle (once he found a way to dump the baby mama in the States and carry off the child). Mags being born a girl wrecked that plan; at that point, it would've been easier if Mags looked just like her mother, as then Magnus could claim that Mags wasn't really his, that Mags was just the desperate ploy of a manipulative American sidepiece hellbent on not just being a one night stand. Unfortunately, Mags is visibly his child, redheaded, freckled, with a tall, lithe build. After pulling a runner on Mags and Makayla at the hospital, he was counseled that Mags could eventually be useful to Magnus, but only as long as he didn't completely abdicate responsibility for his illegitimate daughter. Consequently, he has arranged for her education, and periodically arranges for dinners with Mags at a fancy Swedish restaurant in town, among other little things to make it look to an outside perspective like he actually cares about Mags. Mags hates these dinners, she hates spending time with Magnus, she hates being reliant on Magnus' nebulous charity, and she absolutely loathes herring. The sooner Mags can find a way to no longer rely on Magnus, the better.

Secondary Mother
Sherry Marchand (36) is an old friend of Makayla from a time in elementary and middle school when Makayla was a much less unpleasant person. As they went to different high schools, and Makayla grew to be a far more unpleasant person, Sherry and Makayla grew apart. However, when Sherry heard through the grapevine what happened with Makayla, Magnus, and the baby, she reached out to try to help. However, the Makayla she reached out to was a decidedly unpleasant person, manipulative, deceptive, selfish, lazy, seductive, dishonest, prone to delusions of grandeur, and even downright emotionally abusive. While Makayla accepted Sherry's assistance, she was pretty entitled and ungrateful about it, treating Sherry's kindness as an automatic given, and Mags a failed meal ticket. Sherry sucked up all her growing anger about the person Makayla had become, and tried to be supportive, though there were times she had to fire Makayla from the bar Sherry worked so hard to open, only to rehire Makayla after Makayla had once again burned too many bridges, and started taking it out again on Mags. Due to finding it hard to put up with Makayla, Sherry has not always been present for Mags, though it doesn't mean Sherry hasn't been trying to keep an eye out for Mags. She's set aside a bit of money for Mags' college education, as she knew Makayla wouldn't, and has promised Mags assistance getting a job once Mags is old enough to get a job of her own.
