Rune loved the mountains where he dwelled with his lovely mate, among his wonderful herd. Yet when he'd heard about the alliance with the nearby Vulpine herd down in the forest, he couldn't help but descend his home to meet some of his new friends. He was no diplomat or ambassador but he felt he could leave a good impression among the common folk of the Vulpine herd. With good intentions he set out down the mountain, seeking certain flowers along the way. His mother had taught him the language of flowers, and he wanted to make a good impression on the other herd.

The first flower he found was the chrysanthemum, the perfect symbol for friendship and honesty, the traits he most wanted to put forward towards the new herd. Next he located the hyacinth for sincerity and steadfastness. To Rune these blooms were a promise he was making, a sacred covenant to be honored. The sunflower was next on his list, to put forward loyalty, adoration and joy. He expected much joy in this new endeavor between the herds and hoped for many revalries as well! To honor the new beginnings of this union he found a batch of daisies and added to the bouquet he was making. For devotion he found lilies, for prosperity and good fortune he went for peonies, and lastly, for lasting Peace and serenity, he chose lavender.

He was at the base of the mountain and near the edges of the Vulpine her when he was finished, and paused to admire his work. He hoped that this gesture would be understood and appreciated. With a confident smile he stepped into the Vulpine territory.

There was something on the wind. Toshi was hunting and was at the edges of their territory when she picked up the scent of a stranger. This didn't immediately set off alarm bells for her, as she knew there were far more patrols in the area hidden. If they'd felt threatened she'd have been alerted quietly and retracted into the forest. Instead she was curious and while remaining concealed she watched as a large stallion emerged from the mountain and into her land. She followed him a while as he carried a bouquet of flowers through their lands. She noticed others from her herd curiously watching from the shadows as well, imperceptible except by those who know how to see. It seemed everyone was content to simply watch, but not Toshi.

She stepped from the shadows, deliberately stepping on twigs to alert her presence, as was customary in their herd. It was considered polite to make oneself known before speaking. When the stallion turned his attention to her she spoke.

"Welcome to the Vulpine herd, can I help you?" She cocked her head at him curiously, peering at him from under her skull mask. the rest of her face was hidden beneath the skull, unreadable. She guessed this stallion must be from the herd they had just made an alliance with. He looked like one of them anyway, and smelled like them. She remained calm and curious.

the stallion was a littler surprised when he wasn't immediately challenged as he entered the Vulpine herdlands, though he knew they were an elusive lot. Still, he felt eyes on him and glanced around looking for the sources but seeing nothing. Unsettled, but determined he pressed on, looking for anyone to speak to. He maintained his composure when the cracking of sticks and crackle of leaves behind him startled him, and he turned to meet the mare that stepped out of the shadows like a ghost. He could swear he'd just checked the spot she emerged from a moment before.

"I'm looking for the herd leaders, to make an offering!" He said jovially. He took in the mare before him who exuded a sense of mystery. Her face was unreadable with only her eyes peering out at him. "Or are you someone I can entrust this to?" He gestured to the flowers he had brought.

Her lavender eyes looked the stallion up and down, then gazed at teh flowers he had brought. She recognized them for what they were, an offering of friendship between the herds. She thought it sweet, but she also knew the herd leaders were busy. Her three tails shifted and swept the leaves around behind her as she pondered.

"I can take them from you," she finally said. Suddenly she had an idea. She turned and pulled some pelts she'd recently prepped from her hunting spoils. "Take these as gifts in thanks," she said as she slid them over. She hated parting with her pelts, as these were particularly nice but it was better to return the favor. This stallion was setting a precedent of kindness between the herds, and Toshi would meet that challenge.

"My name is Toshi, by the way," she said as he gathered the pelts and she took the flowers. "What's yours?"

He couldn't hide his disappointment when she offered to take the flowers instead of taking him to see the herd leaders directly. They were probably busy with the arrangements for the royal marriage and the new alliance and trade routes being established. He could only imagine how much work was being done by those above himself. He took her offered pelts gladly - furs and pelts were great for the mountains and he would happily pass them out at home.

"My name is Rune," he answered pleasantly. "I am from the Snaerblod Herd up in the mountains, as you may have guessed. I came down of my own accord to greet the new herd and offer my friendship personally." He smiled warmly at the mare. The skull stared back at him, but to Rune it seemed the eyes crinkled in a smile.

"We would welcome you up in the mountains if you ever chose to visit. It's a wonderful place, devastatingly beautiful. Though perhaps a different beauty than you are used to," he added as he looked around the lush vegetation around them. He noticed more faces peering out from the shadows than he had a moment before. He found the Vulpine members a little mysterious but curious and kind. After all, this stranger he just met had given him the gift of pelts! He hadn't expected anything in return for his meager gift and thought he was perhaps outclassed in this exchange and vowed to return with more useful gifts.

"This place is truly wonderful," he said as he brought his thoughts back to the present.

She considered his offer to visit. What a notion! She thought about looking out over her home from atop the mountain and thought it might be a lovely sight.

"Maybe I shall meet you up there some day soon. I confess I've stayed away from your territory before. I know your kind to be very large and not ones to be trifled with. But you seem kind and level-headed. Perhaps you can tolerate some of our tomfoolery." She cocked her head to the side to look at him. The vulpine herd was a little mischievous and complicated for most to navigate easily. The new Queen should clear some of that up and help them connect with others more easily. That was Toshi's hope anyway. She hasn't met her yet, but if the Protector took her for his then how bad could she be?

There were a lot of hopes and fears riding on this new alliance.

"What do you think of this alliance?" she asked suddenly. She wondered how the other herd must feel about their Heirress marrying a shifter, one from another herd no less. Perhaps they held no prejudice against them, but it was still a harder road.

Her question caught him off guard but he had to think about it for a moment. He had merely accepted it when he was told, but now he really wanted to give it proper thought. What DID this alliance mean for him? He looked around again at the beautiful forest around them, a place he was now welcome. If there was nothing else offered between them this would be enough for Rune. "I think the alliance will really open up both of our herds and I can't wait to learn more of your culture. Can we see more of your lands? Some of these trees seem twisted deliberately, are you growing the trees in patterns?" He tried to see deeper into the woods but the canopy above was thick. Still he saw hints of structures and patterns in the branches and trees deeper in. He would like very much to see these things up close.

She stared at him for a while, her eyes unreadable. She was pondering his answer, weighing it, tasting it on her tongue. He wished to learn more about us? That was an interesting notion. She was interested in learning of the mountain and the hunting grounds she might be afforded. She was also curious about the herd members and wanted to see what they made their homes out of, if not trees grown into huts. That was all she knew. The Vulpine herd had been so isolated for so long that Toshi couldn't even guess at what all she doesn't know.

"Yes, we cultivate and grow the trees and their branches into patterns and architecture, mixed with other techniques. Our homes blend into the forest in a truly magical way if you ask me." She nodded slightly as if agreeing with herself.

"I can show you around, sure. There's plenty to see and it's all really cool to see." They had paths through the forest that unless you knew it was there it couldn't be found it blended in so well with the rest of the forest. Along those paths were branches grown into intricate patterns and swirls making walls of art around you. She would walk him along those paths and show him their gardens, both food and aesthetic, and some homes, and some other points of interest around the herdlands.

"Shall we go?"

He was really impressed with their ay of building. He looked forward to studying it up close.

"Please lead the way," he said as they walked down a path together.
