Quote: Poultrygeist (10) : As Destiny City is a bustling metropolis, it’s not unexpected that there should be some strange animals running the streets. Sometimes it’s a tiger, sometimes a monkey, sometimes a chicken. Sometimes it’s something worse. Strange egg clusters have appeared in Destiny City’s parks and officials aren’t really sure what they are; these eggs have nothing inside of them. Though it’s an anomaly, they are chalking it up to teenaged pranks. However, they have advised to just leave the eggs as they are. Nobody wants to say why, but if you’re out late at night, you’ll find out. In the darkness, whispered between the sounds of the city: a guttural, rasping cluck. The creature stands on stilt-like legs, rooted to the ground with razor-sharp talons. It wears a cloak of long, oily feathers that drag on the ground with a sinister scraping. If you stare into the darkness, piercing red eyes stare back at you. That’s all it takes for a confrontation: a mangled bird, maybe a chicken in another life, comes barreling out at you. It stands easily as tall as a person, but the proportions are all wrong. The smell of sulfur follows it as it lunges, pecking and screaming and scratching as it attempts to chase you away. Maybe, from the nests full of empty eggs. The battles are fierce, but fleeting; it will viciously try to chase you away but the effects are always the same: at some point, the eggs are crushed. As always, there’s nothing inside of them, but with one final wail, the bird will vanish into a plume of foul smoke. Trier was back at the park again, and honestly, she was just here to make sure there weren’t any new egg piles. There was the feeling of a Page nearby and she thought about approaching. She really did. The thought was there, and then it was gone and she was fine with it. She didn’t want to be a mentor. She was far too snarky for that.
Of course, when she found the nest and pile of eggs, the dread that filled her chest was something she couldn’t ignore and she gave a heavy, long winded sigh and turned around, moving with as much speed as she could towards the Page.
“Hey. You. You’re in danger. We need to leave. Now.”
No introductions, no fluff just.
There was a mutant chicken coming, and she had to do what she could with what she had.

It had only been a few months since he’d become aware of any of this, but Somniorum was already well sick of unfamiliar voices in the night. Even if they didn’t belong to horrible creatures from whatever unspecified pit was disgorging its contents today, or to sirens seeking to pluck at the souls of the unlucky, they tended to belong to well-meaning folk warning him about the former. Not that the page was complaining about having a heads up, of course, he just wished that it was easier to avoid what came after, given the fact that it usually involved him putting in a more valiant than preferred effort to prevent himself from becoming dinner. His face twitched slightly as an acrid smell twisted through his olfactory bulbs. He would have liked to believe that it was an open sewer line or something, but it was never something that simple. “Wha-?”Somniorum looked around, not bothering with a more eloquent response.

Trier nodded, and beckoned for the other to follow her. “Mutant chicken cryptid. Nasty and creepy. Smelly too.” She paused and then let out a groan as the smell hit her own nostrils. “Damnit. Too late. You’re a Page, yeah? So no magic?”
It wasn’t really a question, but she had to ask anyway just in case she was wrong! That maybe he had magic and would surprise her. “If you have a stick…if you can find a stick…sticks haven’t let me down much in the past.”
And maybe they would help this out. “I can hold it for a few seconds but. A stick would be fantastic. Whack a mole or pretend it’s a pinata.”
Was she making sense? No, not really but she was in a rush. And it was coming.

Cryptid? Right. Of course there was a cryptid. Probably like that damned wolf he’d met the previous winter, no friends to be made there. Even if Somniorum was inclined to befriend ravenous monsters he would have given that one a pass. If he hadn’t heard more than he wanted to about Tempesti’s adventures with some horrifying poultry demon, the word “chicken” would have been enough to convince him that the Saturn Knight was playing a bizarre joke on him. As it stood, however, he had to draw the unfortunate conclusion that he was about to make the creature’s acquaintance. The page felt his eyebrows twitch at the stranger’s comment, less at her observation than at its accuracy. Even if he had magic in his arsenal, he wasn’t entirely certain that it would make all that much of a difference and for the thousandth time he questioned the moon’s judgment. Or the Code’s? Or both? He still wasn’t entirely clear on the hierarchy that may or may not be in place there, but he suspected that whichever ancient sentient force had been in charge of that decision had been a bit impulsive in its selection. More frustrating still were the difficulties the Moon Knight had getting his hands on something that might actually enable him to defend himself. “I already have a stick.” He held up the splintery wooden handle attached to his lantern with something resembling an attempt at humor before summoning a hefty wooden table leg from his subspace. It had been his grandfather’s idea, people might find it a bit strange for someone to carry a furniture support with them but it was unlikely to lead to any arrests. “My granddad made me this though.” He was painfully aware of how stilted his anxious speech sounded as it made its way out of him but there was very little to be done about that at the moment. He shifted his grip on the sturdy wooden implement as he waited for whatever was coming. True, Somniorum had never actually used the makeshift weapon in combat, but he’d practiced with the thing. As much as he could call using it to bludgeon a punching bag “practice, anyway.”

Trier paused and stared at Somniorum for a long moment, or, really, at the lovely looking heavy leg of what appeared to be a chair or a table. “...You just…have that with you? In your subspace? That. That’s interesting…”
Not a bad interesting it…honestly was a surprise, and she half wondered if she should start breaking furniture to keep as a cudgel…
At least she had magic now. That was important. “My starting weapon was a pin. Pretty, but useless. Pretty useless, you could say.”.
Whatever else she could say was absolutely and utterly moot as a horrible, blood curdling cluck came out of the darkness, followed by a smell that she just…wished wasn’t. There.
“God. It’s here. Get ready for this s**t.” Famous last words? Maybe, but her weapon was held tightly, and as she let her gaze roam over the abomination…she wished that she too had a table leg.

Somniorum could hardly blame the other knight for her bafflement at his choice in weapon, were he in her position his expression probably wouldn’t be much different. “Yes, that’s where it lives.”Carrying it anywhere but his subspace felt entirely impractical, allowing him to have at least one hand free while it waited to be summoned. Felt more convenient than the alternative. Any thought of continuing that line of conversation vanished at the sound of the horrifying screech the blackness delivered. As for the stench, he decided that was best left unconsidered for now as he opted to sacrifice his nose to keep his mouth unsullied. “OK. OK. I’m ready.” Somniorum wasn’t normally one to lie, but as he clutched his table leg he hoped that he could at least fool himself long enough to get through this unshredded.
