Star Charm: Sapphire

The Fireflies (6) : In the warm summer nights, little glowing lights begin to bob and dart through the city. Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn't the first time they've appeared in Destiny City, but no one's been able to tell where they came from or where they're going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers.
"Come on Navi," Tortuga called out to the little light ball, expecting it to come bouncing over like it normally did, when it didn’t he got worried. “Navi? Navi? Where are you?” . It was hard to think that just a few months ago he had fervently wished the curious spot of brightness to go away. To stop haunting him or to leave him be. He had honestly disliked the creature if only for the fact that it was always around, always just zipping past or exploring everything. It wasn't hurting anything, but it also wasn't being helpful. It was just there. He had been indifferent to it, if not down right rude. Only relatively recently had he softened his stance in his little 'shadow', given it a name and even started to praise and scold it when it did something remarkably intelligent... like startling a bird or chasing a squirrel. Or finding his lost necklace. That one in particular really deserved a treat but Tortuga didn't know what Navi, the name he had given the sprite, would or even could like. So it was a bit surprising when he felt the concern and worry build in him as he looked for his little companion and came up with nothing. There was no spot of light zipping in from the darkness, or popping out of a bush. It wasn’t right nearby like a child exploring but never drifting far from their parents. “Navi? Come on buddy, this isn’t funny.”
Tortuga tried to keep his voice steady and calm even as he picked up speed, turning a corner in a local park and coming to a dead stop. To his surprise, in the stretch of grass that was normally full of children playing or couples picnicking, there were hundreds, no… possibly thousands of little pinpricks of light. Little sparks of color flying all about, flickering on and off like little colorful fireflies. And there, in the middle of them, was one steady light. Bigger than the colored lights, not flashing on or off, and definitely not some strange color like most of the lights. “Navi!” The squire called out, relieved when the ‘odd’ light paused in its playing before racing over to him. Once it settled down in Tortuga’s outstretched hand the knight set about lightly scolding the little fella. “Don’t go wandering off ok? You could get hurt or lost.” He didn’t really know about that, since he had no idea what Navi was let alone where it came from, but he didn’t want it to get hurt.
Once done reprimanding Navi, Tortuga sent it off to play with one last reminder to stay relatively close. He watched Navi bounce among the flickering lights for a while, absently fiddling with the little Sapphire star charm he had in his pocket from earlier. He watched silently, only muttering a curse when one of the fire flies drifted too close and gave him a good zap when he brushed it away. “Guess that makes sense,” He said to absolutely no one. Not even Navi was near enough to listen to Tortuga’s observation. “They are lighting bugs…. I really don’t want to see ‘Fire’flies then.” Just the thought of a field of bugs that could start fires was giving him the chills.
With that thought he decided it was time to call the night of patrolling done. “Lets head out Navi, say goodnight to your new friends.” Once the little light zoomed over, Tortuga headed out, making sure to keep an eye on the ball of curiosity as he headed back out into the darkness with a new understanding on how his folks felt when he was a kid.
