The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn't be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it's incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it's just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there's something undeniably magical about it.

Thaddeus had... a particularly warm and gentle smile on his face when he'd suggested that Lovas might find the summer nights in Destiny City especially enjoyable. Which was already a bit of a weird comment, since Lovas didn't frequently complain about the nights (it was the days with the blazing sun and scorching temperatures that he struggled with). And he already spent most nights outside, anyway. It was not so easy to feel at 'home' on this planet, but the nights were closest.

Still, Thad had spoken of the summer nights with a pleasant and wistful note to his voice, as if he was half-enamored by some sweet memory. Maybe he was. Lovas didn't ask; he didn't think he should pry his eyes into a beautiful, personal experience.

But his friend had given him a set of coordinates on his Senshi device and had instructed him very particularly that it would be a good night to not patrol. The Chaos would always be there, and Lovas would definitely find it if he looked, same as every night. ...But maybe he could ignore the lure of confrontation just this once, follow the map Thad gave him, and have an experience he wouldn't usually get to see on Earth.

There were a great majority of things on Earth that he wasn't used to seeing, and Lovas preferred to be defending this planet from the putrid poison so eager to spread across it (because few in his circle were so keen to defend it)... But... he could take Thaddeus' advice this once.

The location recorded on his Senshi phone was rather out of the way; Lovas saw barely anyone as he made his way there. It was out of the major pathways of the city. Maybe in a state park, although he hadn't seen any identifying signage. Through a small copse of trees, up a hill, to where the stars shined unimpeded in the sky overhead- they almost seemed close enough to touch, even. And he'd barely been there for even a moment before the twinkling stars began to jet across the sky, leaving colorful trails in their wake.

Lovas' head canted, mouth popped into a little 'o' of surprise as he watched with widened eyes turned glassy by the night.

Sky phenomenon was not particularly common on his world. Everything had been... murky and dreary for as long as he could remember. Nothing like what the sky looked like here, ever. Let alone now.

It had been so long.

So long since a meteor shower had streaked the night above Bacchus.

The suffocating grey of the Bacchanalian sky had only shifted in depth, barely enough to mark the passing of the hours. An expanse of endless grey nothing unpierced by any merciful glow that might have given some comfort in the silent centuries.

It was all he could do to keep from sinking to the ground, allowing himself to sink into the uncharacteristic wonder he’d refused to feel, secure as he was in the knowledge that nothing lasted long enough to make it worth the wasted emotion. Still, the strange lights above invited him to slip through that stubborn barrier, if his reluctant mind could be persuaded.

One of the various videos that had made their way across the screen of his phone had told him that these weren’t actually stars, had nothing to do with the souls of the dead in their journey through the branches of the sky. But still, he couldn’t be entirely certain of that. Humans hadn’t even fully mastered space travel. They were ignorant or in complete denial about the existence of magic, something the entire rest of the galaxy had managed to grasp. How could they know that all of them were space debris? He nodded to himself, satisfied at least in the ambiguity he knew remained.

They couldn’t take that from him.

A mirthless chuckle escaped his throat, it made little difference whether the gods were dead or never lived, the end result was the same and at least some of the souls had escaped before Chaos denied them that freedom. A wave of guilt shuddered through the senshi’s body as the worst parts of him hoped that it might have the ability to hold them in place. At least until he would have more time to prepare for the possibility that he might have to face them here.

Maybe another millennium or two.

The thought made him feel

Bacchus sighed and craned his neck skyward in the hopes that he could let these stars chase away the gloomy thoughts, at least that was his intention before another distraction presented itself in the form of a friendly energy signature.

Scanning the area, he found himself pleasantly surprised by the sight of a familiar face. With a wave he gave a shout to Sailor Lovas, “Hey!” He trotted over to the other deep space senshi, gesturing widely in the general direction of the sky. “So…this!” Maybe he was a bit more at a loss for words than he’d realized. It was a strange sensation, certainly, unusual for him to say the very least. Maybe it would be worth it to sit and watch for a while. It would be easier with company, at least. Were he willing to focus on the notion long enough to acknowledge it, he might admit that he appreciated the idea of watching this bizarre phenomenon with someone else who’d experienced something similar to what he had. With a hint of a smile he sank to the ground, face upturned.

It wouldn't have shocked Lovas had there been others to witness this sight. There were many humans on Earth, and they surely must be privy to the wonders in their own city. And seeing it alone did feel like it might dampen the experience a bit... But if he'd expected to be joined by anyone, he would've thought it to be strangers, people following the trends on their weird little devices.

Instead, he found himself quite warmed to see an actually familiar face. "Bacchus!" Lovas greeted, a wide, pointed-toothed grin lighting his features. "This is much out of the way, isn't it? Did someone send you this direction to experience the spectacle?" As Thad had done for him.

Lovas was beaming, himself. There really had been so little of interest on his world, with the intrigue dropping exponential the more the Chaos invaded. And it was a treat to partake, however briefly, in all the unique things Earth could offer...

They had met but once before, so Lovas was perhaps not the best judge of what 'normal' constituted for his friend, but he thought Bacchus seemed... more lively, somehow. Granted, Lovas had accidentally woken him on their first meeting, so maybe being roused from slumber didn't generally invite much liveliness... But Bacchus plopped down on the grass, and from his higher vantage point, Lovas could look down at the other man and see...

"Oh..." He crouched at Bacchus' side, threading a finger beneath the striped collar at the other Senshi's shoulders. And yes, perhaps if he cared to identify it, his aura was distinctly different than on their first meeting.

"Do you feel changed?" He asked, canting his head a bit, still smiling fondly.

It felt odd, the reminder that people knew about these things ahead of time, he supposed it made sense. Only a dead people ceased marking the time as it passed, and even if it frequently shared more heat and moisture than the deep space senshi would have preferred, Earth still had a sky to watch. That alone was more worth celebrating than the planet’s natives knew. He snorted, briefly aware of the grizzled elder his thoughts channeled, and thoroughly relieved that no one else was aware of

“I…no, I just…found this.” Rowan had mentioned it in passing, but for all her best efforts, his friend’s comments on the positive aspects of summer in Destiny City did occasionally get lost in her more colorful descriptions of the galline encounters she’d had the previous year. She’d probably say that it was a good thing to let himself find pleasant surprises. “It’s a happy coincidence.” He grinned at his companion, yeah it was nice to have someone else there.

Changed?

It felt like a strange question, considering the circumstances. He changed by the day, by the hour.

“I guess I do,” he didn’t talk about the empty places where his power once flowed, or the creeping obligation everything seemed determined to drag forward. “It’s ******** weird. Going through a magical adolescence again. I was supposed to be done with this!” Despite his complaints, his voice lacked bitterness as he leaned dramatically backward into the grass.

"Hm?" Lovas blinked a slow, dim glaze in Bacchus' direction at the complaints about his changed form. Not because he disagreed with the sentiment, but because- "'Again?'" He repeated, tone curious.

He tried to riffle through his own limited knowledge. Maybe Ophelia had also mentioned the ability to grow back into her magic once she'd acclimated to Earth and had her friends help her cleanse her world. So maybe it was the more natural occurrence to be a Senshi fully grown into their power... and for it to slowly wane as the Chaos drained their world.

But Lovas had only experienced his life as a Senshi off of his own planet, and had returned to it once its Chaos affliction had started affecting him from afar. He'd never been more than he currently was, and his limited time on Earth had yet to change that. Maybe his magic had become slightly less accessible over time... But even that was something he'd barely missed. His practical, physical abilities had always held more value to him and the people of his world, while they'd lived.

...He wasn't sure he appreciated the term 'magical adolescence.' And his smile, which had been bright, and then confused, was now more terse with the impending threat of magical adolescence.

Lovas remembered so little of his initial awakening. And he had never grown in power from that, but he did have the vague impression of being dissatisfied with 'adolescence' in general.

"It's not so bad, is it?" He prompted, hopeful. "Surely just a bit of extra magic here and there. And it should be magic you are familiar with, even? So controllable enough?" Not like it was when they were new Senshi. ...Presumably.
