It had been a long while since Amelia stood on this doorstep. Truth be told, when she had pulled up in her Mercedes, she hadn’t recognized the manor as much. With all the trees and well-kept plants, she was half certain that the manor had been sold to someone else or that Melody had decided to hire a new gardener herself.

Standing there for a moment more as she took in the manor, her lips stayed in a flat and unreadable expression. This could have been her home if it hadn’t been for the series of unfair and delusional requests left by her ex-husband’s father. That and the son who had followed in the drunkard’s footsteps, apparently, until recently. Something had changed, according to Melody, but she didn’t buy that for one moment. There had always been something wrong with Aloysius, in her opinion.

Finally, she knocked, a quick and sharp rap against the old wood of the door. It was all she needed to do to announce her arrival. A letter that had been sent by someone named Liam in regard to a wedding brought her here. Better to warn whoever the poor sap was that the son who tore the whole home and family apart was toxic. Then she could wait until they dropped dead and get what should have been hers or her ex-husbands over a decade ago.

Liam hadn’t expected anyone to turn up today, he’d been working from home, so when he heard the knocking the blond looked up from his work before slowly standing and making his way from the living room, stretching as he went, his legs were a bit stiff from sitting on the floor working on things for the family. But he enjoyed the work really, even if it might be considered a lot, he was working on something for Melody which dealt with the lounge.

Dressed well, though comfortably, Liam finally reached the front door and opened it. Smiling as he looked over the female standing there. “Can I help you?” He’d never seen his spouse's mother so he was utterly clueless as to who was standing there, or that he should be worried or feel on edge, he was his usual self as he greeted her. While he didn’t know who she was…she did look familiar, very familiar, she looked like Melody. But didn’t Aloysius say his mother wasn’t likely to turn up? That was who this was…right?

Should he tell his partner? That would likely just upset him, stress him out even, so Liam pushed the idea away and stepped aside to let her in. “I can get some tea if you’d like, or something else? Coffee, espresso?” There was no wine kept in the house, for anyone, he was lucky he let a bottle of cooking wine remain in the place and that was kept away from his partner. He trusted him but he didn’t want to have it there to bother the other, to remind him of the past, it wasn’t nice to do such things.

With a slight smile that seemed warm and welcoming, Amelia nodded just slightly to their question. “Oh yes, of course. I was nearby and thought I might visit my son.” Leaving out the fact that she knew all too well that Aloysius was not going to be home today, she followed the blonde inside and took stock of all the changes.

The fact that the centennial carpet was gone had the corner of her lips turning down into a scowl behind the other’s back before she caught herself and refreshed the pleasant and welcoming smile she wore at outings.

“Tea, something light with no sugar, please.” Not that she needed to mention it was because she needed to watch her figure in case a better opportunity for remarriage ever came her way. Eyeing the new furniture and all the changes to the manor, she saw a few that she actually approved of. Taking count of all the contractors and changes that would need to happen when this home was rightfully hers again.

“And who might you be, dearie? I thought my son might be home, but I must have come at a bad time.” Feigning sadness at missing a meeting with her child, one she hadn’t seen for almost half their life now, she dabbed at the corner of her eye with the silk monogrammed handkerchief from her small clutch purse.

“Any preference in tea? We have a lot of options in the kitchen.” Which he would, of course, show her since they had a lot of options for tea in the house and it was best she choose what she’d prefer. Liam didn’t think it wise for him to attempt to pick something for her, he didn’t know her at all, whereas he had no problem just picking for Aloysius and even sometimes Melody he’d pick food or drink for.

“Why don’t I show you the tea options and I’ll make whatever you’d like me to.” That was the safest bet, as far as he figured, while heading them both to the kitchen so he could open one of the cabinets and let her see the large selection they had.

“Liam ma’am.” Wanting to be polite, perhaps overly so, he wasn’t about to misstep here…at least he hoped not. “His fiance, it’s nice to meet you. Did you want me to call and let Aloyisus know you’re here?” Even though he was certain it would stress his partner out, he would call if she wanted, he didn’t plan to otherwise though.

Following the blonde, apparently named Liam, and also her son’s fiance, Amelia gave them a closer look over. They looked young, very young, and not like someone of high society. They didn’t have that air to them and she could tell they were cautious as she looked over the opened tea cabinet.

“This one would be perfect.” Pointing towards one of the loose leaf tins that was of Lady Earl Grey, she could tell they were taller than Melody and herself, but given how long it had been since she’d seen Aloysius, she couldn’t be sure of how they compared. But it wouldn’t matter, considering kids wouldn’t be possible without extra steps, so genetics might not play a part in things.

“Amelia, DiMarto, and it is nice to meet my son’s fiance.” Looking at the kitchen table, she took a seat carefully before dabbing at her eye again. “Oh no dear, if he’s busy I wouldn’t want to bother him. I know it’s been awhile since he’s reached out to me.”

Nodding as she chose which tea she’d like, Liam took it down from the cabinet and went to set about preparing tea for her, even fetching the good tea set from where it was kept. He and Aloysius didn’t use it often, there was really no need for it, but this was his partner's mother and he knew she’d expect something beyond the usual tea kettle and cup. While the water heated, and he set things up, he nodded his head once to her words.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you finally, I’ve not heard much about you I’m afraid. I’d like to know more about you, if you don’t mind.” Deciding to learn about her, since Aloysius didn’t speak about her, Liam figured it was best to keep her talking about herself rather than asking him things. He didn’t want to step into any traps by accident, as he was certain she would try poking into things she shouldn’t be, he wasn’t ready to try dealing with someone on her level and he knew it. So he’d divert if he could, and hope it worked, he could hope she wouldn’t see it for what it was.

“I never did think to ask Melody about you either, something I should have done though.” Had Melody told Amelia about him?

It was quiet here, not that it hadn’t always been that way, but it felt different than it had years back. With the changes to the interior as well as this blonde who was busying themself with getting tea prepared, she wondered what other work had been done on the manor.

While it wasn’t surprising that Aloysius hadn’t brought her up, she wasn’t sure what Melody might say. Her daughter was good about keeping things quiet, at least when it came to personal information and matters. But it didn’t matter much, she could offer some sparse information to them.

“I was a singer for many years, mostly in opera and some theatre productions. Music does run in the family, of course. Do you play an instrument?” Directing back to Liam, she noticed the mention of knowing Melody at least enough to talk with them. It was surprising to find that she was interacting with her brother now. It was something she’d played a part in making sure wouldn’t happen. Nothing good could come from that boy, not if he took after Victor. Wherever her ex-husband had vanished to, she hoped he was suffering.

“Opera..I had asked Aloysius, recently, about going to see an opera.” He was still hoping for that, though he knew nothing about opera, other than the obvious, but it was something he wouldn’t mind experiencing. Especially since it meant singers who could sing and keep on pitch.

“I don’t play an instrument but according to Melody I have perfect pitch…and I can sing, I used to sing growing up…just for myself.” Nothing trained, nothing learned by him, but for himself and the children at the orphanage because they’d enjoyed it, it helped them on bad nights. “I wasn’t aware that such a thing existed until Melody mentioned it to me.” So he had some talent, just nothing he ever put to use, though he honestly wouldn’t mind taking singing lessons. It was something he might bring up to his partner, or even Melody. As both were likely to assist in such a thing.

The smile that came to her face was genuine, at least in part, as they mentioned having perfect pitch. If her daughter had come to that assumption, then she knew it was probably right. If anything, her daughter had taken after her when it came to singing, even if the range was different.

“She really is a dear when it comes to things like that. My darling daughter always had an ear for talent. She does take more after me anyway.” There were some things she wished hadn’t come from Victor in both of her children, but with him out of the picture for most of Melody’s upbringing, the damage had been minimal enough.

“So how did you meet my son? Was it at one of his shows?” They looked younger, though she couldn’t quite place his age. They could have a whole life ahead of themselves if she could find a way to eke out something to make them realise who her son really was beneath it all.

It would make sense for Melody to take more after her mother, both singers and she had lived with her mother, and while he got on well enough with Melody he knew to watch for the mother. He remembered enough from his partner's words about her, few and far between as they were, and yet he found himself smiling and nodding. “Melody has been helpful, I enjoy what time we spend together.” Since she was going to be his sister in law, and she always seemed up for trying new food with him, Liam somehow enjoyed bringing new foods for her to share with him and see what they thought of them. It was something for them to bond over, he didn’t try nearly as many new foods with Aloysius as he did with Melody. Because they worked together he was able to treat her to food, often, and critique it with her.

A lot of the places they liked he then bought from in the future and shared with Aloysius, because he knew the food was good enough to have again. Perhaps, in an unplanned way, it made Melody a tester for new foods but that was fine - it was all good.

“Meet Aloysius…” He couldn’t, and wouldn’t, answer that properly because that would cause his partner problems. He knew Aloysius had a s**t relationship with his mother but Liam would not make it worse, his relationship with his sister was bad enough. “I met him at the school, where he was giving free lessons to the children, one of the children taking lessons I lived with - I was picking up.” It wasn’t a lie but he knew it wasn’t the exact answer she wanted either.

“I ran into him one night and we got to talking.” Again it wasn’t the exact truth but it wasn’t entirely true either…but it was better than the truth.

Hearing that they spent time with Melody was a double-edged sword. While it meant that her daughter was finding talent to work with, in this situation, it led to her children being far too close for comfort. It might ruin the years she’d spent letting her daughter know exactly what Aloysius was like. She didn’t need to be around the boy to know he’d take after his father.

Watching as the blonde seemed to be recalling things, she was a bit surprised they’d met at school, even more so by the phrasing they’d used when regarding children. It wasn’t the way you’d mention siblings, and she found it odd, leaning forward a bit as she nodded. “What was your last name again? I forget if you mentioned it, dearie.” If it was one she recognised, or at least even remotely could, then it would answer a few more questions without them knowing.

“You wouldn’t be the first one he met through school, though I am surprised to see that he’s settled down. Eliza, I believe her name was, poor thing. I do wonder where she is now.” As if she didn’t know and held onto that for the future. Just one loose thread to pull when she could to try to tear things apart.

“Blackwood, it’s not really important.” Certainly not a name she’d know, not that he knew she would go looking into things to see if it held anything to it, he doubted she’d know it was the last name the orphans at the place had if they didn’t have one of their own - like himself. Some who were given up had parent names on file, last names given by those parents, that were used instead of the orphanages name being used as a surname for those who were most unwanted by their biological family.

“Eliza, he’s never mentioned that name. I’d imagine she’s doing well, I’d certainly hope so, just as we are. From the sound of things it was years ago.” Shrugging as he spoke, brushing off her comments, not thinking of her as trying to separate them, didn’t mother in laws always talk about their children's past relationships? Compare current partners to previous ones? He was certain he’d heard about it online and on tv.

It wasn’t a name she recognized, which meant he wasn’t from a well off family or a black sheep of some sort, which meant minimially the man wasn’t a fame chaser most likely. She filed it away to look into later, when she would look into whatever else she could about the change in things for the family business. Some of the adjustments she’d heard first hand from Melody, adjustments she was delighted to hear about.

Waving her hand vaguely she shook the comment away. “Decades almost.” Though she hadn’t been sure of the exact time frame aside from it being before Victor disappeared. Something that still bothered her but she hadn’t had any luck even with private investigators looking into things.

Picking up her cup of tea, she sipped at it lightly as she pondered things, the man wasn’t one who seemed to lie or at least their face showed a lot more than most of the people she dealt with did. It wasn’t surprising that they’d be nervous, meeting a soon to be inlaw had that effect on people. More so because of the fact she hadn’t exactly been around before so there hadn’t been warning either which was what she’d wanted.

“But that’s in the past I suppose. I am glad to hear he’s settling down, not something I expected but delightful nonetheless.” Putting on that fake and well practiced smile, she took another sip of her tea as she watched the man. “You do have a talent for making tea by the way, a perfect steep and flavour.”
PostPosted: Tue Jun 09, 2026 3:54 pm

Deciding not to focus on this other person, because it really was so long ago, the blond smiled towards his soon to be mother in law. “I’ve gotten good at it, Aloysius likes his tea.” Liam had gotten into tea as well, more than he ever had before they’d met, it had been something he’d had in the past though. The people who cared for him, who worked at and ran the orphanage, liked their tea and would at times offer the children a sip to try it. It was mostly to satisfy a child's curiosity over what they were drinking, as children were often curious about adult things, and he hadn’t liked each tea he’d tried but some had been good. Some he’d remembered the names of, or the flavors, and had bought for himself once he’d taken to living on his own.

To know he’d done well making tea was nothing new, he knew he was good at it, but from his mother in law on their first meeting was good. He’d heard enough about her, he was worried and nervous, so to hear that he’d done well as good. Maybe she’d like him? Or at least tolerate him and not think him unworthy. Neither thing would stop him from marrying her son, she didn’t get to decide his or Aloysius’ life, but it would make things better if she liked him.

“I’ll make sure I keep plenty of that tea around in case you visit again.” Assuming she would visit more.
