He spends most of his time studying. Whether it's learning a new language, studying psychology, or memorizing area codes. What's the point of living forever if you aren't going to build your mind? LONER Nicholas mostly keeps to himself. Upon turning, many vampires join clans and associate with other vampires. Nicholas never did. He had no desire to embrace 'vampire culture', as it is. He'll occasionally take to patrons in his bar, but even then, most nights are spent off in a corner, just watching. He doesn't let anyone really get close to him, and hasn't in over 100 years. PROTECTIVE Though in his life as a vampire, Nicholas often avoids people, if he spots someone in danger, nothing can stop him from intervening. He has always had the need to protect others. It was why he became an Auror all those years ago. He isn't afraid to put himself into danger if it means keeping someone else safe. In fact, he can often seem rather aloof in dangerous situations. STUBBORN Once Nicholas makes up his mind about something, he's unlikely to change it. He'll listen to new information, but won't let the opinions of others sway him. He also hates being told what to do. People rarely try it these days, but when he was first turned, other vampires tried to push him into their ways. He staunchly refused and hasn't wavered in the last hundred or more years. IMPULSIVE Though he has a better hold on it now than he did in his human life, Nick is still, at his core, impulsive. He often doesn't take the time to think about the potential consequences of actions and just does what feel right in the moment. This can also lead to having a bit of a short temper if someone manages to find his triggers. SOBER Nicholas seems very even keeled. He doesn't speak much, preferring to observe. He was much more outgoing in his human life, but that changed after he was turned. He's rather serious and seems emotionally detached. However, this also means he remains coolheaded in bad situations. He grew up with plenty of expectations from his parents and a number of older family members because of this. His family wasn't blood purists like some lines, but that didn't mean they weren't proud. He tried his best to be the person they all wanted him to be. By the time he neared eleven, he had gained five younger siblings. He was thrilled to receive his Hogwarts letter, not only so he could study magic, but also so he had a chance to be away from home and on his own. SCHOOL YEARS Upon arrival at school, Nick was sorted into Gryffindor to no one's surprise. Even from his first year, Nick was popular. He was outgoing, good at Quidditch, and wealthy. He had everything going for him. He had a group of several close friends who would eventually all go on to become Aurors together. In his fifth year, he was made prefect, as well as Gryffindor Quidditch captain. His initial OWL grades weren't fantastic, however, but once he decided he wanted to become an Auror, he buckled down and ended up doing quite well with his NEWTs. Once graduation came around, he was one of the top students. POST-GRADUATION After graduation, he began training as an Auror. He took to it immediately. He loved that he had the opportunity to protect and defend others. Though every day was different, it became almost a comfortable routine. However, it wasn't long before things changed.
On August 4th of 1914, England became embroiled in the Great War. Wizards were dissuaded from getting involved because of the supposed risk of breaking the statute of secrecy. That didn't stop many, Nicholas included. He fought alongside several other Aurors who disobeyed the orders not to get involved. He served throughout the war and was later recognized for his actions, and once the war had ended, he returned to his work in the Auror office.
The 1920s brought the threat of another one. This time, one specific to the wizarding world. In the early years of the decade, there were rumors of a wizard who wanted to 'remake the world'. Whispers of threats to both Muggles and those wizards who would support them reach the Ministry. Then, in 1926, Gellert Grindelwald came forward, committing a series of attacks in which over 100 people were killed. This immediately unleashed a worldwide manhunt.
Over the next year, Nicholas and other Aurors were sent all over Great Britain, looking for any sign of the Dark Wizard. Even sometimes traveling to other countries and pairing with their Auror department. He was briefly caught in another country, but escaped after only a short time. All the while, the man gained more and more supporters, all across the wizarding world.
It was at a rally of Grindelwald's supporters where Nick's eternity would change. The Aurors were attempting to go in quietly, at first wanting only to keep an eye on the rally. However, once the supporters realized they had company from the Ministry, it quickly devolved into chaos. Wands were pulled and spells cast. Nicholas didn't even know which side had started it, but the next thing he knew, he was fighting for his life. In the midst of the battle, he put himself between one of the other Aurors and an assailant. He didn't even know what spell the woman used, but the next thing he knew, he was on the ground, covered in gashes and lying in a pool of his own blood. After that, everything was a blur of screams and flashes of spells. Eventually, everything went quiet and dark, but he couldn't move, and no one had come for him. He was certain he was going to die until he saw a figure. He barely understood what came next, and all these years later, he still doesn't know why it happened. He never even fully saw the man's face.
The figure approached him, offering a drink. Nicholas assumed it was water, but the instant it touched his mouth, he knew something was wrong. He only figured out later that it was blood. Vampire blood. The man continued pouring it down his throat, and soon Nicholas's pain was doubled. His entire body felt like it was on fire, and all he could do was writhe on the ground. He could hear screaming again, eventually realizing it was coming from himself. The figure then disappeared. All Nick could see of his shadowed face as he left was a fanged smile.
By the morning, the pain had more or less subsided, replaced by a burning thirst in his throat. It was in those dawn hours that he first attacked a human. The minute someone crossed his path, his instincts took over, and he almost drained the person whole. When Nick finally caught hold of himself, the only thing he could do was run. Not knowing whether that person died or not haunts him to this day.AFTER TURN It took months for Nicholas to feel as though he had control over himself, but eventually he began to venture out, though he still mostly avoided others. Especially other vampires.
He couldn't stand being near them. They had this culture that he couldn't stand. He'd been forced into this life by someone completely unknown, and he had no desire to join some clan and go along with their little rules. He also didn't dare to go back to the Ministry. At the time especially, vampires were looked down on. Seen as a thing to fear. He also assumed that he had been counted dead anyway, so there was little point.
For the next several decades, he lived on the fringes of society, only spending time in towns to resupply, but once the 1960s came around, he felt it was time for a change. On a trip to Knockturn Alley, he passed a pub. It had been one of the places he would go to meet with informants back in his Auror days, and it was for sale. With barely a thought, he made an offer on it and soon became the owner of the White Wyvern.
Owning the pub slightly improved his outlook. At least now he felt slightly more comfortable being around people. He would spend most nights sitting in the dark corners of his bar, just watching. It was this habit that earned him the nickname Strider from some of his patrons.
The last 100 years have been spent in mostly the same fashion. He did make himself known during the Second Wizarding War and other conflicts, still not being able to stay out of a fight, even if he kept to himself. xxxUPDATESxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
