Story:
One year on their birthday when they were very young and still very naive, the three Ma'Duwi siblings were told of a special ritual they could perform. The ritual would guarantee they had a great birthday and happy year ahead. It was a tale told from generation to generation in their pack. The ritual was simple. The night before their birthday, they had to leave a small trinket or something they cherished as an offering to the Birthday Guardian in a secret hiding spot. They couldn't tell anyone where it was or it wouldn't work. The day before their birthday, Thea, Helios and Selene all set out on their own to find that special item they were going to hide and the best possible place to hide them.

Thea knew exactly what she wanted to hide. She had a beautiful feather that she had found and painted with some dried berry paste. It was a lovely color of purple and red and had some beads tied to the end. She was sad to let it go, but knew it was the perfect thing to leave for the Birthday Guardian. She also knew of the perfect spot to hide it. There was an old gnarled tree that she liked to visit sometimes and she knew there was a big hole at the bottom of the tree where she would sometimes hide from her siblings. She carried the feather to the tree, dug out some dried dead leaves from the opening and gently laid the offering down and covered it back up with more leaves. Satisfied with her hiding spot and offering, she left to go back home.

Selene couldn't figure out what to leave so she decided to go looking for something to hide, thinking it really didn't matter what it was, so long as she were able to hide something. She ventured out, no real plan in mind just looking for something interesting. She found an odd shaped rock that sparkled in the moonlight, but kind of resembled the shape of a crescent moon. Perfect! She picked it up and looked around for somewhere to hide it now. She spotted the old gnarled tree where she and her siblings liked to play hide and peek and sometimes climb on the lower branches. That seemed like a good hidey hole. She rushed over to the hole, quickly dug out the old leaves and debris, raking a paw across something stiff in the process. She didn't really pay attention to what it was but quickly tossed the sparkly rock inside and shrugged saying, good enough, and went back home.

The third sibling, Helios, was a little more calculating. He took the longest to pick out the offering and even longer to find the perfect spot. He decided on an iridescent shell that had chips and scratches. He also chose the old gnarled tree with the rotted-out hole at the base. He meticulously cleared out the hole, noticing the sparkly rock that was inside. He paused as he had a feeling that this might be someone else's offering from some time ago. Perhaps it had long been forgotten about. He decided to move the rock out of the hole and placed it nearby on a root. He put his offering inside and covered it neatly with some fresh dirt and a few leaves picked from some low branches nearby. He took a few more seconds to walk over the dirt to push it down more, leaving paw prints all over the fresh dirt.

The next day, Thea came back to check on her feather to see if the Birthday Guardian had come. Thea found that her special painted feather had been moved and replaced with a shiny shell. It made her paranoid it would happen again. She huffed. Who had moved her feather? She didn't want to stay there next to the tree to keep her treasure safe in it's spot and ruin her chance at a great year, but this birthday had to be awesome, even if she did have to share it with her brother and sister! She looked around and noticed her feather lying under some leaves nearby, discarded from the hiding spot inside the tree. She padded over to it and sifted with her paw at the leaves. "I will find a new spot for my feather then." As she stood there with a puzzled and irritated look, her siblings soon arrived after her to also investigate whether the Birthday Guardian had come. She whirled around to find them. "Wha.. really? It was you... both?"

Selene ran up to the tree and noticed that Thea was there, digging in some leaves. She stuck her paw into the hole of the tree and felt around, only finding the shell there. Helios watched Selene and Thea go back and forth.

"Why are you here?" Helios asked as he interrupted their conversation.

"I put my gift for the guardian here, and I came to check it," Selene answered proudly but cautiously, unsure as to why Helios was curious. Then the idea hit her, "Hey! Did you move my rock?" she accused Helios.

"If it were a sparkly rock, then yes." He answered matter-of-factly; he didn't have a secret to hide.

"This was where I put my gift for the Birthday Guardian. Where is it?" She looked around in case it was nearby and noticed that it was sitting on a root nearby, out in the open. "There it is! How come you moved it?!"

Just as she was about to pounce on her brother, Thea started to speak. "It appears that we all chose the same spot." Her gentle voice filled the space around them.

"We can share the space, right? The guardian will be here any minute." Helios offered after a minute of silence, his mind wandering about how to solve the situation.

Selene was the first to start laughing at the situation. "You are right Thea, we all chose the same spot. It's pretty funny. And you're right Helios. I guess we can share, we do share a birthday after all. What do you think Thea?"

Thea nodded and they all added their items back into the hole and left together, tails wagging, happy that they had figured out a solution together. They raced off to play, hoping the Birthday Guardian would soon come and take their gifts. It wasn't long after the pups had left that their parents sneakily stole their kids offerings and left behind some of their favorite treats. Later in the day the trio returned and found the treats that had been left for them, and had one of the best birthdays ever!
