Halflion Hills

Concept:
We've got a pride of dwarves and a pride of elves, it only seems right that we ought to have a halfling/hobbit pride as well.

Species: Lions as the primarily members, open to buffalo and avian allies.
Coloration: No colorations are turned away, but there is a preference among the halflions to be colors among the ground: browns and greens, blacks and greys.
Naming Rules: Follow shop standard - no English names. Standard halflion names, however, are usually tied to food or nature.
Breeding Rules: Lions may only have cubs with other lions, the Halflion culture is open-minded... but not that open-minded.

Halflion Hills - A Summary

History: Even when you're half the size of your neighboring prides, it can be easy to feel overcrowded. When the dwarves took the mountain and the elves took the forests, not to mention all the pridelander and outlander business, the small group of lions that had been named by their taller peers as 'halflions' decided it was time to move out of the way and find a more suitable territory.

They took little with them save for some seeds from their homelands, and moved far beyond the reach of the pridelands. They passed the dwarves' mountains, stretched beyond the elves' forests and even moved beyond the snowy peaks where they witnessed a different pride forming. They left before they could be felt by the dawn lands' touch or the night plains' cruelty. At last, they settled in the very far east, greeted by rolling hills covered in lush grass. Here, they found their refuge, where at last they could be at ease without having to worry that they would be pushed any further out. Surely, they'd left plenty of territory between them and the home they'd left.

Territory: In times since first arriving to the hills, they've dug out a place for their pride - literally. Rather than having dens above ground, left to bake in the heat, they've dug out caves in the hills. Each family has a hill to their own and it's seen as a right of passage that when you make your own family with another, that the intended couple will move out of their family's hill and carve out another for themselves. The coolness below provides a safe spot to wait out the sun on exceptionally hot days. Many lions will keep a wall of stones around the entrance to their den to dictate their personal territory line. Within the stone line, it's common to keep a small personal garden and the insides of the dens are often decorated to preference, with some preferring soft bedding and others enjoying dried flowers to decorate the walls, stuck up with mud or placed in carved alcoves.

Culture: Halflion culture is not as grandiose as the elves or as built on tradition as the dwarves. Nay, it was built simply from finding out what worked best and what did not, with traditions being picked up one year and set down the next.

These traditions are ever-changing and evolving as generations grow and pass, but keeping allied animals as a means of harvesting milk and eggs as a viable food source, salting meat to preserve it for harsher seasons when food is scarce and celebrating with parties and festivals to keep spirits high are some of the long lasting traditions of the halflions in the hills.

Another important thing to note about this pride is that they have no single leader. Elders in the pride are respected, and so are particularly talented workers, but many halflions keep to their own rules within their own dens. The Guards exist to patrol the borders, but they are managed solely by themselves and a sense of duty, rather than any lord they swear allegiance to. Of course, this may lead to some interpersonal skirmishes between families, but such is the way of living with a large pride with no leader - and honestly, the halflions prefer their privacy and minding their own affairs, rather than having some pompous fluff-mane try to tell them how to mind their own business.

Festivals: Halflions always enjoy a party and this pride has dedicated its years to having as many parties for as many reasons as they can. While halflions may celebrate with small gatherings in the privacy of their own homes, the celebrations that bring halflions out of their holes are as follows:

[Autumn] Harvest Festival - A celebration of food and plenty, all manner of jobs come together and show what they've created in the seasons leading up to the harvest. There's plenty of food and drink to go around, and often halflions will present their best crop, food or drink to be judged by the crowd, to help improve upon for next harvest. Curers, Fishers and Gardeners are especially recognized during this festival.

[Winter/Summer] Solstice Celebrations - To celebrate the shortest day of the year, halflions will party hard through the daylight hours, often getting their most intoxicated (save for the ever-watchful Guards) so that they can sleep through the night hours. In celebrating the longest day of the year, halflions will start the festival at dawn and party through the sunlit hours, ending their celebration as the sun at last sets well into the evening. The winter celebration favors the Brewers, while the summer celebration favors the Bud Tenders work the best of all.

[Spring] Spring Equinox - Often referred to by locals as the 'spring fling', it's not unusual during this celebration of growth for single males and females to weave flowers into their mane to indicate that they're looking for a life partner. Gardeners and Herders are especially prevalent in this festival that celebrates growth and new life.

Jobs and Job Changes

Halflions don't have ranks assigned to them at a certain age, they're taught whatever calls to them and can change it at any point. While it's more typical for a family line to have a specialty in one field, it's not uncommon for a family of gardeners to have cubs that want to explore being Fisherfolk or Brewers.

When your lion joins the pride, they may pick a job to list as their rank, and if they wish to change it later on, they need only post a job change form in the joining thread, along with a RP or SOLO interacting with another lion who teaches them the ropes for that job. (Example: A Herder wants to become a gardener? They'd write a solo or rp with a gardener and post for a job change!)

Gardener - A halflion who tends to their own garden, or anyone else's in the pride if hired. Specializes in tilling the earth and growing seeds and sprouts. They occasionally work with Bud Tenders, another plant-aligned job.

Bud Tenders - A specific gardener who specializes in the lion equivalent to catnip! They grow specific types of grass that's used as a painkiller for some lions and a relaxing snack for others.

Brewer - Working alongside gardeners, brewers have mastered the skill of malting grain and fermenting fruit alike. As such, they're able to make both beer and wine alike, though every brewer will have a different "secret recipe" that's been carried down in their family for generations!

Fisher - Fishing halflions are often called lazy due to the fact that they spend so much of their day sitting by the river, but they're actually very diligent workers. With fast reflexes to scoop fish right out of the water, most fisher lions know how to swim, in case they end up falling into the river when they overshoot their strike.

Curer - Halflions have learned about the miracle of meat preservation! Through purely accidental meals wherein someone buried a fish in a salt deposit, now meat curers regularly visit the salt deposits in the valley to rub against meat to conserve for longer periods of time, especially for the hot summer seasons, when fresh meat becomes more scarce.

Herder - While buffalo allies are able to help with any job, herders are halflions who exist to tend to their allies in particular, directing them where to mow down areas of grass, facilitating heavy lifting requests and aid in tilling fields. These halflions have always had an affinity for other animals, so who knows, maybe a new job will be developed in generations to come, if other animals express an interest in joining the pride.

Guard - All halflions are encouraged to protect their individual dens and patrol around their yard lines if they are inclined to do so, but Guards exist who will patrol the hills to keep an eye out for any predatory intruders or newcomers. After traveling such a far way to keep out of the reach of other prides, any newcomers to the Halflion Hills are treated with great suspicion until proven trustworthy, and the Guards are there to be the first contact point.
