Quote: Snowbunnies (1) : Winter seems to bring out the cutest of all rodents; this isn’t the first time that small, white rabbits have infested Destiny City. They’re small, rarely larger than a guinea pig, and have large eyes and wiggling noses. They are always pure white and seem to show up whenever there’s snow. They aren't menacing or evil, they're just everywhere. They seem strangely domesticated; they are sweet, curious, and friendly creatures that will eat anything you give them. They always seem cold to the touch, and when they shake, little snowflakes sprinkle off of them. While they seem to be social creatures who seem to appreciate anything warm and will cuddle up to steal body heat, they are too skittish and fast to be kept for pets. They can show up just about anywhere, either alone or--often--in pairs. They tend to wander off on their own without any trouble, but if you surprise them or try to catch or hurt them, they may bite. Their little teeth are enough to break skin, but after one bite they run away. The bite itself isn’t bad, but the effects are a bit unpleasant: for roughly two days after the bite, the injury is cold and the victim will feel random, cold, shooting pains. Their core body temperature will drop and they will often be sent into random fits of shivering. No medicine seems to help, and no amount of blankets or hot baths can soothe the chill. You're just going to have to deal with it and hope it gets better… Most experiences with the bunnies are perfectly pleasant, you just have to worry about them burrowing. There are holes peppering Destiny City, and with the fresh fallen snow it can be impossible to tell where they are hiding. The holes range from small holes to several feet deep, so can be a minor inconvenience to a potential hazard. On the bright side, sometimes you wind up covered in bunnies looking for warmth from their sudden guest. On the other hand, there are a rising number of trips to the hospital for twists and sprains. The bunnies always leave with the snow, so best to enjoy them--or avoid them--for as long as you can. Christmas was over, as was New Year’s Eve. It was officially 2026. Not that he had stayed up to watch the calendar tick over. Sarah had been put to bed and both he and Dessie had dozed off on the couch. He woke up to the sun peeking through the curtains in the living room, bathing the entire space in a golden light. Nate smiled at the memory of how sweet Dessie looked curled up on the couch, under the blanket he had tucked around her at some point. The quiet morning quickly ended when Sarah woke up and announced it to the world by asking for breakfast. At least she seemed to have forgotten all about the salty words she had learned recently. He was truly thankful for that. Their little girl loved parroting words back, regardless about how appropriate they were for a nearly three year-old to say and ‘pissed’ and ‘hell’ were definitely not on the toddler approved list. Dessie had a doctor’s appointment, just a standard check-up so Dessie said he didn’t need to go, and he had a meeting later in the afternoon for work so after some coordination with his wife they decided he would take Sarah for the morning and Dessie would get her in the afternoon. With the daycare closed until the following week they had to work around each other’s schedule. In an effort to help wear their little hellion Nate decided to take her out to the park, only this time he picked a different park then last time. He didn’t want to deal with any more sheep. He chose a smaller park, where there was a playground for kids. Mostly older ones if the size of the jungle gym was any indication but there were at least swings for smaller children. Sarah absolutely adored the swing. By the time his arms were aching from pushing the little girl endlessly on the swing Sarah was ready to get down, unfortunately she was still a bundle of energy she was just tired of just sitting there. The swing hadn’t done much but make her more excited, she wanted to get out and do something. After glancing at the time he decided that playing in the snowy sandbox wouldn’t hurt anything. He was right there afterall. “Ok princess. Just for a little while, ok.” “K daddy,” The little girl agreed, before promptly toddling around in the sand babbling to herself. Nate kept a watchful eye from a nearby bench. There wasn’t anyone else around but that didn’t keep him from scanning the surroundings. That is how he missed the sheep last time. He still couldn’t believe someone lost an entire flock of sheep. Who even had that many sheep in the city? Nate mentally grumbled, still a bit sore over the whole fiasco. Not that anything serious happened, he had just been surrounded by the wooly nuisances. The worst thing that happened was that Sarah desperately wanted a ‘fluffy’ now. She truly had wanted to take one of the creatures home. “Fluffy!” The toddler squealed, drawing a sigh from Nate. “No darling, no fluffy right now,” He assured the little girl, seeing no sheep in the area. He did however miss the small little rabbit that was nearly perfectly camouflaged into the snow in the shadow of the play equipment. He might have missed it but the little girl sure didn’t, “Fluffy!”

Oh, what was that?
A flash of white had caught Quicksilver's attention and the small Mauvian turned her head just in time to watch as one of the small bunnies she had seen previously scampered by. Well it was good to see that the little critters were alright. Thinking back to the first encounter she had had with the creatures brought the smallest sound of displeasure as she recounted the other unfortunate encounter that had followed. The man that had apparently hated cats had done some strange trickery after she had bolted with the stuffed mushroom. He had somehow made the item disappear from her hidden cache of stolen objects after she had dropped it off. For when she had gone back to check on things several hours later, it had been gone. There was an extreme sense of disappointment that overwhelmed her at that sudden loss of a treasure but Quicksilver had adapted and gone back out in order to hunt down something else to replace it with.
Pushing the thought of a lost treasure out of her mind Quicksilver rose to her feet and began to pursue the lonely bunny as it loped onwards towards a wooded area in the distance. The kitten was simply content to act as this little bunny's silent protector for the time being, given it a shadowy escort that would guard it from those that chose to offer harm or danger. Quicksilver was already quite taken with the air of the unknown that the bunnies exuded. What other creature only seemed to exist after it snowed? She also found herself often stumbling upon the holes that the creatures made and gently dropping in on purpose in order to simply mimic the feeling of being ensconced by warmth and family once more. For even if she were an intellectual being that was as old as time ... there were times that she still longed for the recollection of being safely sheltered from the cold and unknown, much like how it had been when she had had litter mates. It was a win-win situation in her books. The rabbits seemed to crave her warmth and she in turn had a peaceful rest amongst the impromptu warren.
What Quicksilver did not expect to see was a child tottering around chasing after another rabbit that seemed to have materialised out of seemingly nowhere and that was heading right towards the one that she was shadowing. Given the child's exuberant cry of 'fluffy' ... the young cat believed that she would probably have to intervene and make sure that the bunnies were able to disappear, away from the grasping hands that reached for them. Why was this child not being supervised more closely? Anything disaster-like could occur and then how would the caretakers feel dealing with the outcome? Quicksilver sheathed her claws and padded in the general direction of the young child before putting herself directly in the path of the toddler. She merely wanted the bunnies to be able to get away safely ... and then she, too, would disappear.

He might have been a little distracted looking for sheep but he wasn’t so distracted that he didn’t notice Sarah go chasing after something. Nate was on his feet fast and heading her way but he apparently wasn’t as fast as a toddler who had found exactly what she wanted. With a happy cry the child grabbed a gray creature and cuddled it close, “Kitty!” She turned around just as Nate reached her and he sighed. “Princess, you need to put the kitty down. Gently baby.” At least the smallish cat was still better than the sheep. Although the gray fur was definitely not what the toddler had been chasing at first. He frowned down at the child, his gaze drifting over the area. Where was whatever she was chasing a moment ago? “NO, my kitty!” “Sarah, you know better. Put the kitty back.” He tried to be firm but the quivering lip and the rapidly filling eyes were hard not to cave too. Nate knelt down so he could face his daughter at a much closer distance. “We can’t have a kitty baby, they make mommy sick.” It was a lie but both he and Dessie agreed that it would be too dangerous to have a cat in their household. Especially with a child running around.

Even as small hands reached for her Quicksilver knew that she would not be able to speak to this individual. Being picked up and cuddled into a small body, even if the grip was a little tight, had Quicksilver instantly knowing that the bunny she had distracted this child from going after owed her ... something. For the moment though the Mauvian remained silent in terms of her ability to speak there was no harm in charming this youngster even more and so letting cat instincts take over Quicksilver began to gently knead at the girl's side even as she began a low purr.
What the small feline didn't expect was to have someone, obviously the child's father, march on over and issue an edict to release her. Quicksilver's ears flicked back once in disapproval but she felt a little bit of satisfaction when the child, Sarah, insisted on holding her even tighter as a result. Inwardly she gave a sigh before gently twisting around in Sarah's grip to position herself a little better.A Already she could picture the tantrum that would follow in a child being told "No" by the parental figure and maybe she could alleviate the inevitable meltdown. Stretching out a little further she nosed the small hollow at the girl's throat before her little pink tongue appeared to "kiss" the spot there. It was her hope that she could distract Sarah long enough to simply ooze out of the child's hold.
Wriggling a little more, Quicksilver turned her head to peer at the man that was now crouched by his daughter before issuing the sweetest little mewing sound in response to his words about the absent parent. There was a small inflection in the man's voice and she caught it. That was obviously a lie. But if that was the case so be it. Instead she let her blue eyes pierce the stranger's green eyes in return before she gave a slow blink. Her tail twitched just once before it stilled and she moved to squirm a little more in Sarah's grasp.
For such a young human Quicksilver was quickly learning that they had an extraordinary grip. She wouldn't push the issue if Sarah refused to release her as she didn't want to harm anyone but the grip was tightened around her small body as she felt a little bit of the infamy of toddler defiance and she issued a small squeak of protest. That had not felt pleasant at all.

Sarah giggled and held the cat tighter as the feline licked her. Nate tried to persuade her to drop the cat while watching the cat carefully. He was expecting claws, maybe even teeth, but the stray was holding back remarkably well. Nate was relatively calm, if cautious, at least he was until the cat looked at him. It wasn’t the gaze that had him stiffening but the little ivory star on the cat’s forehead. The grown man sucked in a breath of surprise before hissing at the cat, “You can’t have her.” He wanted to shout. He wanted to yank his daughter away from the guardian and hide her behind him, but he also didn’t want to traumatize her. “She is too young and I will not allow it.” The toddler, sensing something was wrong, froze. “Daddy?” she asked hesitantly, her grip loosening on the cat, even as she looked to her father while trying to understand what was going on.

So, it seemed as if this man knew what she was. Quicksilver's heart sped up a little before her ears caught the words that he was speaking. Oh, oh. He thought that she wanted his daughter to awaken her into a warrior for Order. How absurd. The child was still much too young for something like that to happen and even now, as his actions brought a cause for alarm to wash over her did the Mauvian sense the grip that Sarah had on her loosen a little. Instead og squirming to free herself Quicksilver's eyes never left the man's and she gave him a slow blink. Would he know that it was a feline's way of saying 'trust me?'
Following the slow blink Quicksilver turned her head in a back and forth motion, remnants of a human shaking their head in the negative to the situation that she was being unfairly accused of. Motion out of the corner of her eye had the Mauvian catching sight of one of the bunnies watching the scene from the line of foliage before she sighed. It already seemed as if the man deduced what she was but she did not feel like speaking in front of the child so she continued to simply shake her head back and forth.
She could only hope that the human would infer that she had no desire to do anything towards Sarah that would be life-changing. Under her breath though she spat out a drawn out, "nooo," but disguising it as a yowl.

“It’s ok princess… Everything is alright,” Nate tried to assure the toddler, who seemed to have tears brewing the longer this staring contest with the guardian occurred. Even with the cat apparently shaking her head, and refusing to talk, he was leery of the feline. No guardian cat was a good omen, or at least when it came to having a younger child around. That was his staunch belief. He had been dragged into this fight almost by accident. To protect Dessie… while she herself didn’t need protecting. Now he would protect his child by keeping her out of it. He would do whatever it took to keep Sarah clear of the magical war that happened in Destiny City. He was about to say something more to the cat when some soft rustling off to the side had him glancing over. There in the bushes were rabbits. As he looked around he realized it was more than just one or two from what he was seeing, all smaller than normal… all most likely as magical as the cat. That's when he put a few things together. The fact that his daughter clearly had said ‘fluffy’ before ‘kitty’, that the gray cat was much more visible then the white rabbits that he had a hard time spotting even when he knew they were there. He would have seen the cat when he saw Sarah chasing after something. He had very likely been misconstruing the entire situation. “Sarah, put the nice kitty down,” He instructed the toddler even as he reached out to pat the child on the head. The toddler’s lower lip stuck out in a pout and she looked away, ignoring her father’s direction. “Sarah,” His tone firmed, “If you don’t put the kitty down then I guess there won’t be any ice cream for dessert tonight.” That had the toddler finally putting the guardian down even as she protested about the lack of ice cream. With the cat on the ground Nate pulled the toddler closer but he didn’t get up from his crouch. He didn’t hide the child or otherwise try to get away from the guardian, he just bowed his head slightly. “You got between them didn’t you? I’m sorry… I just assumed.”

When Sarah finally released her, set her on the ground, as per the instructions that had been given Quicksilver gave a sigh of relief. Her gaze turned to the side to watch the bunnies that had been lining up a short way from the coverage that the foliage had provided. Swinging her head around again to face the humans did Quicksilver heave out a little sigh of relief. Her bunny friends had been saved and in essence so too might have Sarah been saved. Her father, though, the Mauvian narrowed her gaze on him before pushing away the irritation that threatened to overwhelm her. She couldn't speak at the moment, trying to keep the toddler in the dark about things, but if she could she would have lambasted the adult in this scenario about the consequences of jumping to conclusions.
Instead she took his words before simply moving to twine her small body against his crouched body before reaching up to pat at his free side in an act of partial forgiveness. She disliked his attitude and everything like that but knowing when to apologize when in the wrong thawed her enough that she would not show her claws at all.
Sarah was a sweet girl and maybe if she caught this man out and about by himself - they could have a few words.
Moving away to sit a short distance away from the pair did Quicksilver simply observe the pair with a little bit of curiosity. It was obvious that the father did not want Mauvians around the child for practical reasons.

At least the guardian didn’t seem to hold much of a grudge, not if the twining about or the gentle patting was any indication. It would have been so easy for the little feline to put some claws behind their moves, at least with him, to express any irritation but they hadn’t. A small tinkle of a bell had him start before fishing out his phone to turn off the alarm. “Sarah, we have to go meet mum. Do you want to go see her?” “Mommy?” The toddler cheered up instantly and didn’t even fuss when Nate picked her up and straightened up himself. They really did have to go. He had a meeting he needed to get to… and a wife to warn about the rabbits. And maybe the cat as well. He paused for just a moment before leaving to nod to the cat and to express his gratitude, “Thank you. I really mean it.” Nate quickly situated Sarah into her stroller before mentioning to the guardian, because he really did feel horrid about the way he jumped to conclusions, “I’ll stop by in a few hours, without the kiddo. If you're around I can get you something…. I just…. Sorry. Really. I just-” any explanation he was about to give was cut off as a follow up alarm went off. He had to go or he would be late. “I’ll be back. If you're here, good but if not, I understand.” With that he left, still feeling like the biggest heel ever to be born.

The sound of an alarm had Quicksilver canting her head to the side as the adult fished out a phone and silenced it before he moved to pick up Sarah in order to be on their way. Even as the man shuffled around to place the girl back in her stroller, Quicksilver remained sitting on the ground, a silent sentinel. The only reaction that the Mauvian gave to the proffered chance at reconciliation was a short dipping of her body before the duo were gone. Quicksilver then turned her attention back to the fluffy white bunnies that were slowly retreating into the foliage before she followed suit.
For now it was time to go over the strange meeting. She could only hope that if the next meeting did occur that the man would be more forthcoming about certain things.
She would show up.
