2025 Winter Holiday Prompt
Biting Chill ( 18 ) : The cold is strangely harsh, and even the still wind is vicious enough to sting. But the cold isn't the worst part of tonight--it's what comes with it. Out of a swirl of blowing snow, a massive, wispy wolf takes shape, enormous and snarling, with fur spiked like jagged icicles. Its eyes glow with a cold, wild intelligence, and before you can even react, it lunges as though you’ve trespassed deep into its territory. Every strike it makes feels like the bite of winter itself. Wherever its claws slash, wherever its jaws snap, frost cakes over. Even if you're lucky enough not to take massive damage, the cold seeps bone deep. When you manage to land a hit, the creature bleeds a strange, clear blood--icy water that freezes instantly into slush on the ground. The more damage it takes, the more its form flickers, shredded like wind-torn snow. The wolf fights with the relentless instinct of a dire beast, but it is not invulnerable. It will never run. It will fight until its body is broken and flickering, then--finally--a sudden gust will rip through the air and carry its dissolving body away. Howls echo on the wind. The rest of its pack probably isn't too far behind.

Note: This strange wolf is not a youma but can be used as a battle requirement for a character. It can only be used as a battle if there are two powered characters involved; you cannot write a solo and count this as a battle, and your character must be powered to meet battle requirements. You can use the prompt for as many characters as you like and it will count as a battle requirement, however if you repeat the prompt with the same character, only the first time will be usable as a battle.

Super Sailor Sinope was out on patrol, wearing his jacket and pants over his shorts in the cold winter weather when a swirl of snow blew toward him, suddenly revealing a snow creature. The massive monster took the form of a very large wolf with fur that was spiked like jagged icicles. Sinope didn't like the look in its eyes, either; far too intelligent for most creatures or even most youma - at least most youma he knew of. Where had the beast come from and why had it appeared? It growled and snarled at him as if it felt threatened by him, but when he began to step back slowly, trying not to make any sudden movements, it lunged.

The Dark Mirror Senshi really disliked how many creatures like the wolf he had come across as of late. When he didn't have an intelligent opponent like another powered being to battle, his senshi magic was practically useless. Not that it was much use even against another intelligent being, but it at least had an effect. Against youma or other animalistic creatures like the wolf, natural or unnatural, he couldn't even tell if it did anything at all. Besides, they already seemed angry at him enough without him giving them a reason to want to attack him.

When the wolf lunged toward him, Sinope fortunately had been attacked enough in the past to instinctively jump back as a reflex. Where the canine had slashed, however, frost immediately covered the spot, further confirming the creature was supernatural much like Sinope himself. Too bad he couldn't exactly fight magic with magic, but as Sinope like to say, there was always another way to do things. Looking around, he picked up a hefty rock nearby before throwing it at the wolf. It already seemed to be focused entirely on him with completely aggressive intent anyway, so he didn't think hitting it with a stone would give him any disadvantage or worsen his situation. He might have normally attempted krav maga, but as that involved him getting into contact with the beast and potentially getting a limb or something bitten off, he wanted to save physical combat as a last resort and use projectiles like rocks instead, lame as that might have been.

The rock flew through the air and struck the wolf on the head, instantly creating a gash. Instead of blood gushing from the wound, however, clear liquid that seemed to be water spilt from it instead, falling across the creature's face and freezing into a slush as it landed on the ground. Curious. Perhaps the whole animal was made of frozen and liquid water. Regardless, at least that proved that it could be hurt. Perhaps if he'd had a flamethrower, a welding torch, a heat gun, or even just a hairdryer, it might have made a more effective weapon than rocks, but as none of those were handy just then, Sinope reached for another rock. He never took his eyes off the snow predator, not wanting to take any chances and split his attention even for a nanosecond.

Lt. Tetrataenite Sara Kohana]

X Date

──˚─•✧•─˚─┘

What Tetra would give to stay at home, with his lovely partner and cat, having a warm meal and avoiding the winter cold that begun to breeze harsher today from what he could see from his window. But a few months in as a negaverse agent, it was clear the ongoing war waited for no one. That meant no breaks even during the holidays. And quotas to meet , with no care for how Tetra had begun to feel about this whole…. thing.

Of course these worried had been shared to his partner, whom had made it very clear that no matter what path Tetra choose, his partner Actinolite would be with him. While Tetra appreciated it, it made him even more wary about making the right choice. His usual dose of indecisiveness kicking in. He had managed to put it at the back of his mind all until he was on this last (or at least it should be) shift this month.

Now, on patrol alone, he ventured. Doing his best to keep his mind on his goal for today, but getting distracted every now and then. A certain fox ear hooded chaos senshi flickering through his head every now and then. More importantly, his words, and the expression he showed Tetra in the short but impactful conversation he had last time. Jeez.. if only an answer could just…. appear in front of him. Guiding him to making the right decision. Perhaps Sailor Sinope would've changed his mind if he saw Tetra right now. What sort of person that had good gut feelings be hoping someone else would give them the answer?

Tetra would've continued to mull over their conversation for potentially the hundredth time if not for the rapid movement that caught his peripheral vision. His brows furrowed at how the wind only seemed colder as he hesitantly came closer to the clearing. The chill digging into his bones as his eyes widened seeing. A supernatural-like wolf had his back towards him. The trees vaguely shielding Tetra from it's view.

Tetra didn't look too close at who the wolf was nearer to. The winds swirling around it made it difficult to make out who exactly was there, but all Tetra needed to see was the wolf's body movement. He had seen these before at the animal shelter with dogs in particular. Guarded, aggresive, territorial. Whoever it was near, was at the huge risk at being hurt.

No thinking needed. Tetra brought his fingers between his lips, releasing a loud whistle to attract the wolfs attention. He dropped Samantha in front of the same foot he used to kick many sports balls in the past. Though not doing any kicking yet, his eyes steeled on the wolf that snapped its head to Tetra's direction, immediately barring its teeths and growling.

"He-hey……. buddy.." he tried to say, though like with the feral dogs he knew, that didn't work on the wolf, who turned his attention away from - wait - was that who he thought it was? Tetra's eyes widened and grimaced but tried not to move as the wolf moved closer to him. This wasn't really the type for greetings. Explanations could be saved for later. " I .. I realy don't want to hurt you...so please...… " he pleased as he tried to reason as if the wolf could vaguely understand him. But as much as Tetra wished he didn't see it, it was clear in the wolfs eyes that it had already decided Tetra was no friend, but an enemy.

It took a distant howling that acted like an alarm that rang when a timer ran out. The wolf snapped and ran towards Tetra. Tetra's own instinct kicked in, using whatever strength in his leg to kick Samantha high up in the air to the side, nowhere near the wolf. Trusting his own ability and speed to grab the nearest thick branch, running to the Samantha's side, jumping high before hitting Samantha midair, angling it just to aim the wolf's side body. Usually - a vulnerable spot for 4 legged creatures - he thought. He placed all his strength in the hit, that even if it was a plushie the force might be enough to push the creature away enough to distract the creature.

The effect on the wolf was as graceful as Tetra's landing back to the ground. Tumbling into the hard snow and losing his footing right around Sinope's area. He pushed through the pain and tried to stand up, wobbly legs, shaky breaths and a tightened grip on the branch he was still holding on too. " H-hi!" he tried to say, the adrenaline making it hard to say a proper polite greeting. " A-are you okay???" he says as if he had not tumbled horribly in snow a few seconds ago.

"Tetrataenite?!" Sinope called in shock when he noticed the lieutenant and his absurd plushie. He worried about the Negaverse agent joining the fight, especially when his 'weapon' seemed so useless against a giant, supernatural wolf and when Tetra himself seemed like such a non-violent guy. However, it seemed like the lieutenant was willing to hop into the fray if it meant drawing attention away from someone else in danger. It was his technique that worried Sinope as he heard Tetra call out to the huge wolf-thing like it was a pet dog.

Before Sinope could warn Tetra against treating it so gently, he noticed the lieutenant act offensively, grabbing a nearby tree branch and using it as a bat to knock his plushie at the creature. Well, that was pretty creative. And the mid-air hit was quite impressive. Even if the plushie wasn't especially harmful, the force with which it hit its target seemed to be sufficient enough to give the beast pause.

Still, as Tetrataenite fell back down and tumbled into the snow by the senshi, Sinope winced and went to check on him. That had looked like quite the fall. When he tried to stand, the Dark Mirror Senshi did his best to support him in his attempts, draping one of his arms over his shoulders so Tetra could lean on him. "Hi," he answered with an anxious smile. "I'm fine! But are you okay? That was a crazy attack!"

The snow canine seemed stunned just then, but Sinope didn't know how long it would last.

Thankfully he didn't feel as bad as he felt like he should've. Tetra didn't really have a chance yet to be able to use his newly found abilities as much as he should. If it was a civilian, he was sure he would've felt a deep sore in his muscles with a fall like that. His eyes widened a little at the support, but feeling thankful and manged to let out a shaky breath. Gosh... that was scary.

" I- I'm okay! Thank you...sorry-" he said nervously, letting an arm drape a little over Sinope's shoulders, managing to find balance in his feet before pulling away, a sign to show he was okay. For the most part. " Si-sinope whats that.. uh.. how do we trap it.. " he glanced nervously at the ice wolf. He wanted to suggest they run but seeing the speed of that thing- even only momentarily.. that wasn't a good idea.

"Don't sweat it," the redhead told the black-haired agent when he thanked him and apologized.

"Trap it?!" Sinope repeated incredulously, turning to face Tetra as the lieutenant pulled away from him to stand on his own. "You want to trap it? What for? It doesn't seem like an actual creature. More like...snow, ice, and water possessed by wild magic to take the shape of a creature. It's not real like you and I are real," the Dark Mirror Senshi tried to explain. He knew Tetra would have a hard time battling the strange, supernatural wolf otherwise. "If we want to get out of this alive, we have to defeat it. Which probably means destroy it. Like destroying a snowman." A very vicious, dangerous snowman with sharp teeth and claws that could freeze whatever it slashed or bit at.

"Listen. Earlier I threw a rock at it and it bled water. And more than that, its form flickered for an instant, like the snow it was made of was being shredded and dissolving. Just for an instant, though. I bet if we keep on throwing more rocks at it, we can break it down." He paused, thinking. "Or...what about if I throw a rock and you beat it with that branch toward the wolf? You seem really strong, so I bet that would carry more force than if I just threw stones directly." The senshi sighed. "I think we just have to hurry. I heard more howls and I think more snow wolves like this one might show up soon to answer the call of this one if we aren't quick about defeating it."

Tetra blinked as the other seemed shocked at his suggestion. " The- the earlier howling I heard.. that's.. thats not it's family looking for him?" he said, the anxiety still lingering in his tone. But they relaxed a little more as the other explained it was more like magic, than a real being. Even if it relaxed Tetra a little, it didn't mean it abolished any guilt he felt about harming it. " A- a snowman.. okay" he tried to say. " Alive.. we .. we have to get out alive.." he reminded more to himself, nodding. Tetra didn't want Sinope to have to be injured just cause he felt a little uneasy about harming anything that looked somewhat.. just enough alive.

He tensed as the other mentioned about more howling. Tetra didnt feel a need to say anything, just nodding as if receiving instructions from a boss. He quickly took another stronger looking branch, steadying his grip and footing like he was in a life or death baseball game.

Giving an affirmative nod to Sinope, they were put into action. Like they trained to have done this before, Sinope very quickly threw whatever rocks he could scavenge and Tetra ensured to meet the rock with the powerful force of the bat like branch. One by one, the rocks came at too much speed for the wolf to consider coming too closer to them.

Like sinope said, it started to bleed water, its form started being less solid, and with the last rock thrown in Tetra's direction, he tried to hit it as hard as possible.

Just as the last rock hit it square on the head, a cold gust of wind ripped through the air, making Tetra need to squint and cover his eyes with his arm. When the gust stopped, he looked back at where the wolf was - and there was nothing. No body. As if it were never there.

"I highly doubt this thing has any real family," the senshi answered uneasily, though it did make him wonder. "I think it's just instinct as a creature mimicking a wolf to call for a pack to attack with. Which is why we have to defeat it while it's still alone." He felt bad for such an empathetic lieutenant, but they just didn't have time to think of another way. "It doesn't even yelp or make a sound when it's hit," he pointed out, trying to make his companion feel at least marginally better about what they had to do. "I don't think it even feels pain."

Once Tetra had made his decision, he nodded despite whatever misgivings or reservations he still had. He seemed like a good solider. The Negaverse probably loved agents like him - those that knew when to shut up and obey orders instead of questioning what they were told. Again, Sinope felt bad, but he knew he couldn't afford to. Not just then, anyway. They had to work together.

Their teamwork was like a well-oiled machine as Sinope threw rocks and Tetrataenite hit them with his branch like a crude baseball bat. The Dark Mirror Senshi found himself impressed by the lieutenant, and not for the first time. It was, however, the first time it had been by his strength because up until then, Sinope had never gotten a chance to see it in action. He was glad he wasn't on the receiving end of those blows.

After several rocks thrown and batted at the snow wolf, it eventually seemed to disintegrate into water and snow as the vicious wind seemed to blow what remained of it away.

"YES! We did it!" Sinope cheered, going over to Tetra and holding up his palm for a high five. If he wanted to give one. Honestly, the redhead wasn't even sure if the noiret was even the high-fiving type. "That was amazing! And so quick! Thanks for your help, Tetra. Definitely couldn't have done it without you."

Mimicking? No yelping? He supposed that.. helped a little. Sinope was right, Sara remembered the way Samantha hit it smack on it's side and yet he hardly expressed the usual behavior of an animal in distress. If anything they seemed annoyed and ready to fight back at the next few seconds. Still it didnt completely make the frown on his face ease with every hit. Even when it disappeared, he looked a little solemn. He may have used what he knew from basebal to aim at the creature, but this was no game. This was real life. And it shaken him a little to think if the creature was capable of feeling the tiniest feel of shame.

He took a deep breath to remind himself that Sinope and him were at least safe. It was them or the creature, he supposed. Meanwhile the other seemed to have a much more different reaction than him. Cheering and giving him a palm. Tetra was a little slow at first, but eventually gingerly high fived the other with a gentle touch, contrasting with his earlier show of strength. " O - okay! Y-yes!" he tried to mimic Sinope's enthusiam but with his stuttering and lack of confidence, he might've come off as shy. And he definitely was - since the next moment Sinope started complimenting him

" O-oh w-well thats .. it was just a little easier because you were fast with finding rocks. And - " Tetra paused and let out what almost seemed like a smile. " We... did good teamwork.. I agree." he nodded in the end.

Definitely not the sort of patrol he expected, but it gave him a sense that they both saw something in one another that was new from last time. Perhaps fighting alongside each other made them a little closer. Tetra would like to hope. But he wasn't going to urge that towards Sinope, considering what he knew of how Sinope viewed relationships.

Still... guilt aside it was nice that the person he bumped into here was Sinope.
