Quote:
Biting Chill ( 18 ) : The cold is strangely harsh, and even the still wind is vicious enough to sting. But the cold isn't the worst part of tonight--it's what comes with it. Out of a swirl of blowing snow, a massive, wispy wolf takes shape, enormous and snarling, with fur spiked like jagged icicles. Its eyes glow with a cold, wild intelligence, and before you can even react, it lunges as though you’ve trespassed deep into its territory. Every strike it makes feels like the bite of winter itself. Wherever its claws slash, wherever its jaws snap, frost cakes over. Even if you're lucky enough not to take massive damage, the cold seeps bone deep. When you manage to land a hit, the creature bleeds a strange, clear blood--icy water that freezes instantly into slush on the ground. The more damage it takes, the more its form flickers, shredded like wind-torn snow. The wolf fights with the relentless instinct of a dire beast, but it is not invulnerable. It will never run. It will fight until its body is broken and flickering, then--finally--a sudden gust will rip through the air and carry its dissolving body away. Howls echo on the wind. The rest of its pack probably isn't too far behind.

He still didn't get why it had to be so cold, or why there had to be even colder white stuff on the ground, this whole winter thing - made no sense to him. Why this needed to last so long, months he was told, seemed like nothing short of torture as well. He'd done his best to voice this all, something he'd been getting better at as the days went by, and he was fairly confident the siblings had understood just how much he disliked this weather and didn't see why it had to exsist. It wasn't a thing on his home planet. The clothing he'd had for the warmer weather had become useless as thigns cooled, and finally downright chilled, and Rowan now had a small collection of sweaters and blankets. All of them were much needed.

He hadn't wanted to go out tonight, despite the warm clothing and the long coat he had, but he'd been pushed into going out. He'd not been pleased, he still wasm't pleased but he was more cold than anything, while he huddled up as he walked at the knights side. His ears poked out of a hat, seeing as they just looked like part of the hat, as the wind howled and snow was kicked up and sent swirling into the air. This weather was not his sort of thing, he wished he could find some way to sleep thru the whole of winter.

Tucking his hands into his pockets as he walked, nearly shuffled, at the others side. So far no one was out, and for good reason, as he felt the cold sting of winter envade his nose as he sniffed at the air. He could smell fire, fire places he'd been told, and it smelt so good...sooo inviting.

As much as he liked to stay indoors, it seemed his like for it paled in comparison to their new roommate's. As the weather cooled and eventually chilled into its current, snowy, state, Freddy had started to wonder if Rowan might ever leave the house again (though that might have been a bit of an exaggeration, as he wasn't sure what he got up to when he was at school). Uncharacteristic as it was for him to insert himself into someone's business, he decided that he might be able to kill two birds with one stone if he just forced him to come out on a patrol with him for the evening: first, get him out of the house; and second, ensure that he didn't patrol alone.

Gods forbid something like that zombie chicken was running amuck and he had the misfortune of running into it on his own.

"Cheer up," he said, clapping the other on the shoulder after imagining how uncomfortable he must have been just going on how he looked. "It's only a couple more months of this, and then there's a rainy season, and then the hot and humid season," he didn't sound too happy when he said this part, because summer was his least favorite season, "and then autumn is my personal favorite. Usually sunny, and the weather gradually gets cooler."

Bamburgh gave the senshi another clap on the shoulder before slipping his hand into his pocket again. "But you can't spend a whole season cooped up like that. You'll go mad. Heard from a mate that they knew someone who had so don't go thinking it's impossible. Best be careful."

"I was alone, on a whole planet, for a thousand years..." Speaking softly as he set to remind the other of this fact, because he would not in fact go mad by being cooped up for the duration of the season. He would be content to spend most of the year cooped up, only coming out during that hot and humid season the other mentioned. He didn't want to deal with the rest, even the rain, if he didn't need to.

Staring at the other for a moment, looking to see how they'd react, he was certain they knew he'd been on a planet alone for a long time - right? So then they should know he could handle hiding away till summer came. At least this place had warm clothing, something his planet had not had really, and the warm clothing wasn't just warm but also comfortable and soft. It didn't feel so itchy against his skin and even the hat he wore the area around his ears was nice. It had to have cut outs, because of course it did, but it was nice and kept them warm witht he fur trim the cut outs had.

Shivering, despite the warm clothing, his ears shifted while he watched snow swirl in the wind. "Tell me...this holiday coming up. What about it?" He'd heard about a holiday coming up, he'd heard it everywhere including the tv, but he didn't know anything about it. Seeing as he was living here, on this planet, now he might as well learn about it. What would they be doing for it and should he be doing something? He'd seen what was going on around the house as well. It was about time Rowan ask about it all.

The Saturn Page deflated a bit at the senshi's words, not having connected the two together.

"Well," he said, his face scrunching together in mild annoyance (more at himself for forgetting such a detail), the slightest hint of defiance in his voice. "What I'm talking about is more 'stir-crazy' than 'lonely' I think." Which was true! And he wondered briefly if the concept was maybe uniquely human, though he didn't voice the question. "Anyway, it means what I was talking about—losing your head from being cooped up inside for too long. Not good for you, generally speaking."

He offered him another clap on the back. "Anyway, just short patrols once in a while should be enough to stop that happening. Be good for you, y'know."

Bamburgh forced a groan from coming out as he said it. He sounded too much like his dad just then.

Thankfully the topic switched before he could settle into that disturbing thought for too long, and he shrugged. "Christmas," came a simple answer, as though it should be enough. He knew it wasn't, but he let the word sink in for a second before going on. "Generally speaking, it's about being around the people you care about most and sort of celebrating each other by exchanging presents. There's loads of songs that really get you in the mood for it. Lots of places put up lights and decorations to welcome it." He gestured all around them at various festively decorated shopfronts, though quickly pulled his arm back in and shivered as a particularly sharp wind cut past them.

"Depending on your priorities I guess it can either be a really meaningful holiday or something completely hollow."

"Good for me....cold isn't good though." He said slowly, he didn't think the cold was any good for people. Maybe it was though, maybe it was an earth thing and the cold was a good thing. It wasn't bad where he was from per say, just something that they weren't used to. It was cold at night, of course, the tempatures dropped suddenly but the work, labor intensive as it was, kept people warm so the cold air didn't get to them as much as it would have otherwise.

What the other spoke about, being lonely versus being cooped up was two different things obviously but he didn't understand it, as he rolled the concepts over in his head for a moment. "Cooped up is in one place, locked up, so not lonely. Lonely is not locked up but alone. So not the same." His words were slowly testing them out, as he spoke softly, he was careful in how he worded his quesiton as he sought to understand this difference. It seemed to be an important thing and that it all came down to people interacting with you, or avalible to interact with, versus not getting out into the open. Was one really worse than the other? They both seemed similar because couldn't someone be cooped up on a planet? Perhaps not though...because there were things to do? You had a whole planet versus just a small place. Hmm...

"I think I understand...." He was pretty sure he did, the more he thought about it, and it was an interesting thing. He'd have considered them the same, just in a different way, but he could see it now as he thought on it.

Listening as they spoke about Christmas, explained it in broad terms, he nodded his head slowly. "Nothing like that at home - not for me...or others like me." Not for the males anyway. They didn't get to celebrate things, it wasn't their place. "I would never get...presents, or celebrate. Not my place." He was lucky he'd managed to live, to survive, because while he might be a senshi he was still male and that was an afront to his people - a male senshi.

"It is very interesting here - good though." Nodding his head he turned his attention away from the other, looking out and around them, the wind was picking up and snow was swirling and taking to the air in plumes and little twisters of white powered snow. It was pretty, even if he didn't like the cold one but, he could at least admit it was all pretty to look at. It would be better if he could watch this from inside the house, behind a window, where he could be warm.

Bamburgh kept a wary eye on the wind as it blew past them, wondering if something might have been happening that they needed to be ready for. There was the smallest voice in the back of his mind that made him wonder if this whole being powered thing was making him more paranoid than was healthy, but the general idea of "better safe than sorry" was something that he very much believed in and tried to stick to as often as possible. The exception was often when it was anything to do with his sister and her tendency to act first, question later, but he had a feeling he'd be more worried if she suddenly stopped doing that and started acting more like him so that was perfectly fine.

"Well you'll probably get at least stocking stuffers from the pair of us," he responded, looking thoughtful. He couldn't remember ever spending a Christmas without presents, though at his age he was perfectly fine to go without them. As long as he had a break from school and could just relax at home, in front of a cozy fire with tea or hot cocoa and a good book for company.

Family was good, too.

He was about to say more when the wind cut in again, and with it came an ice wolf that stood just a few feet away, its eyes narrowed and teeth bared at the both of them.

"Will need to look into this holiday." Wanting to know about it, from it's history to how it was celebrated, there wasn't any rock he wanted to leave unturned when it came to learning about Christmas. He thought it was best to approach learning anything like that, it was how he learned how to behave and respond to things, it was best he know as much as he could about everything. If he understood, and knew, things he knew what was considered normal and he understood anything he shouldn't say or do...anything to avoid.

"Stocking stuffers...I will look into that." Along with everything else pertaining to Christmas. He was doing his best to learn was much as he could, as quickly as he could, because he needed to survive on this whole new planet. Freezing as his attention was grabbed by the appearence of a wolf, an obvious predator, and he bared his own teeth. Some of his teeth were chipped, he could use a trip to the dentist if only he knew about them, but he stil had sharp teeth and fangs and he bared them now.

"Needs to die." He spoke calmly, not at all stressed over this, this he understood on some level. This was the same as if he had to deffend himself, back home, against another male - which never happened. It would have been ok and instinct of some sort.

Bamburgh tried very hard not to retort with something sarcastic like, "Thanks, I noticed that, too," because...well. He honestly thought it might be wasted on Athebyne because he wasn't from here and probably didn't have a solid grasp of sarcasm just yet. With time, and if he lived under the same roof and him and Pippa...he'd pick it up eventually.

The Page brandished his trowel despite feeling that it was completely useless in this fight, but preferring to have it than absolutely nothing at all for a weapon.

"Any ideas?" he asked, his entire body tensing some as he got into a position to defend himself.

The wolf snarled in response to Athebyne, its fur—or was it more like ice given how perfectly solid it looked, standing on end as the wolf lowered its head to the ground, a low growl rumbling out from its throat.

Bamburgh gripped his trowel tighter, not wanting to chance even a breath until—

The wolf suddenly lunged, aiming to snap its jaws around Athebyne's neck.

He might have never been in a fight but he'd gotten good at moving, to avoid things, from accidents at work to things being hurled at him. He was quick on his feet and dropped to the ground to avoid the incoming attack. Standing as soon as he could he turned his pale eyes onto the knight. "Stab it!" Normally he was not one for violence, it simply wasn't allowed back on his home planet, but here and now it was needed.

Reaching for his magic, for what he'd never used, the senshi of monsoons knew the words before they even left his mouth. Words which had formed in his mind so long ago, and had never passed his lips, he wasn't even sure what it would do if it would do anything at all. He didn't know how it would work, how close it needed to be, doubt sung through his veins and filled his head with whispers. If his magic worked, if it did anything, he would be surprised because he was so new to this all.

"Dry spell." Clearly his answer to the others question, of any ideas, was to fight and to kill it. He wasn't answering verbally but rather with the physical.

[quote="itspao_"Sailor Scout Attack: Dry Spell
Making a motion with his hand, wiggling his fingers really, Athebyne will call on this magic and with it will come a wave of cold temperature and dry air in a ten foot radius around him. The air feels brittle and stifling, like there is an uncomfortable pressure swirling around them. There is only a faint wind, but the stagnation breeds a deeply unsettling air. This dry monsoon feels like the precursor to something big; there is a palpable unease which can cause anxiety and stress, like the waiting for something to happen but it never does. The dryness can cause discomfort to the skin, sore throat, coughing, or irritated eyes. The uncomfortable pressure and dryness lasts for 30 seconds and can be used three times.[/quote][

"With a rusty trowel?!" he asked, sounding incredulous at being told to attack anything with the gardening tool. Though, if he stopped to really think about it, it was probably a worse weapon to get hit with than a regular trowel, if only because it was probably more jagged-edged and possibly even carried the risk of some space tetanus or something along those lines. For all they knew, such a thing existed!

Taking whatever spare time he could to think, the Page then quickly agreed and jumped toward the wolf just as Athebyne said... something.

Everything very suddenly got colder and drier, and he felt it pressing in around him even as he moved forward and slashed at the beast with his trowel. He hits his mark a number of times, each time somehow digging slush out of the wolf, each time feeling a cold that had suddenly gripped onto his arm creep further and further up. The creature seemed to move stiffly, and even felt a bit brittle against the edge of his weapon, and he dodged a strike or two from its jaws by some crazy stroke of luck.

"What now?!" he asked, still doing his best to hack and slash away at it.

While his magic did whatever it was doing, because it was certainly working and doing something...to the beast and the knight. The senshi of monsoons watched the knight work, hacking and stabbing and slashing with the weapon which they had been shocked at him telling them to use. It was sharp, pointed, and it worked well at killing things if the noises from the beast was anything to go by.

It wasn't dead though, not yet at least, though it seemed to be doing it's impersonation of bleeding out. It simply wasn't dying fast enough and with a growl of his own the ancient senshi moved in close, aiming to dig his fingers right into the open wounds the other had made, he didn't have claws but did that really matter? He could use his hands and make them work like claws, sort of, and rip at the thing. No one said he had to show an ounce of grace, or that he couldn't try and tear something to pieces with his bare hands, and he ignored when it's own teeth sank into him. It hurt, of course it did, and he yelped and yipped in pain before digging in further. Curling his fingers further into it, digging, and growling as he pulled at what he had a hold on.

He'd never been in a fight, it simply wasn't in his nature, but it seemed some instinct was there.

He wasn't sure how long they were hacking and slashing against the creature, but eventually all that was left of it was a pile of incredibly cold slush.

Bamburgh was breathing hard by the end of it, his whole body numb including the hand that was still desperately holding on to the rusty trowel, which was dripping a bit of the slush. Another biting wind blew past them, and he shivered almost violently where he stood.

"I think...we should maybe head home..." he said, his teeth chattering as he spoke. "We can get the fire going, get some cocoa..."

Reaching over, he clapped the senshi on the shoulder, wincing slightly at the pain that rushed up his arm as he indicated the path they might consider taking for the trip back. "Didn't realize you had that kind of fight in you, though. Nice work."

Cold, so cold, why did the beast have to be made of this cold stuff? Better question was why did winter even need to be a thing on this planet? He didn't like the cold one bit already and even less when it brought stuff like this with it, he did hope this wasn't normal, if only they could get some warmer weather than he'd at least be willling to deal with whatever it was which they'd just defeated. He'd be nice and warm. But no - it had to be cold.

Bamburgh as not the only one shivering as they stood there, he was as well, and all he coulld manage was to nod his head quickly. "Warm, fire, please." The words passed his lips quickly, too softly, as hope shone in his pale green eyes.

"Fight...in me? No, don't fight." Even though he just had. He had never before and fighting was his place, but he'd had no choice but to do something, he hadn't really had a clue what he was doing. It was all just doing what needed to be done, and perhaps some instinct he didn't have a clue about, but to think he had fight in him? Nope. Rather he gave a fanged smile to the other, ears flickering before he pointed back the way they'd come; towards home.

"Too cold. I'm staying in...till hot weather." Then he'd go out and do things, like lay out in the heat abnd soak in the sun. He'd never really gotten to once he'de matured, he'd been kept working at night so much, he hadn't been able to enjoy anything. He'd slept during the day, like every other male, and worked during the night working up a sweat.
