Absently puttering around the cave with its many alcoves, Nis looked uncertain for a moment. She wasn’t entirely sure how Almadel’s magic worked. Did it bring it to where she was? Or just the general area? And if the latter, should she go wait outside by the bridge? The bridge seemed to be the default landing pad. It would probably be better manners to meet him outside and then walk him in. And if she met him outside, then she could show off without showing off. She was quite proud of how far her little Wonder had come since she’d first visited. If she wanted to wave it in people’s faces, well, that was entirely within her rights…
A soft splash distracted her and she glanced over the lake and grinned. Tagg was having the time of his weird little life, playing in the gently glowing water. He’d be perfectly happy to stay there while she talked to the Merchant. A quick glance over everything revealed that she’d artfully arranged old lamps and candles to provide plenty of light. She’d even found old vents for the little bit of smoke produced to escape through without troubling anyone and cleaned them out. She had a pot of coffee warming on a brazier, snacks on a tray and plenty of cushions for them to sit on while they talked. The box with the scroll was half hidden under a draped silk throw beside Nis’ seat. Really, everything was as bright and tidy as she could reasonably make it. Was there really any good reason to keep putting things off?
Reaching into subspace, she pulled out the two little cards that she’d kept safe and studied them. She wasn’t in need of a favor… Yet, anyway. Stowing the white card away, she held onto the black and nodded. Then, she grabbed a little needle that she’d cleaned and headed up into the tunnel that would take her out into the woods. She’d even managed to find little battery powered tealights to light the way. She had tried to experiment with the flowers growing in the lake, but they’d all died upon being removed from the water. So, replaceable tealights had been the next logical step. She’d worry about sconces for them later. Moving at a brisk pace, she was soon through the tunnel and stepping out into the misty half light of the woods. The cool air carried a spicy, mossy scent that she rather enjoyed and she could hear the chirps and trills of bird and bug. It was... peaceful. Relaxing.
By the time she reached the bridge, some of her nervous energy had burned itself up through walking. She knew better than to touch the bridge, though. It wasn’t her time yet to deal with it. Well, she thought, setting the card between her teeth and holding up the pin, let’s get this show on the road. Nis moved quickly, stabbing the ball of her thumb with the pin, her only audible reaction a slight hiss. Fumbling for a moment, she dropped the pin and fumbled with the card. Then, she pressed her bleeding thumb firmly into the little red circle on the card.
“I really ******** hope you’re not in the middle of a shower,” she muttered, wondering how long it would take him to arrive. “Or things are going to be super weird for a few minutes…”

With a single drop of blood, the ink began to melt off the card. It pooled in rapid, heavy drops, spilling to the ground and puddling as if a faucet had been turning on. The ink stretched thin, moving with an unnatural energy. It bubbled. It sparked. It grew upright, defying all logic, all laws of nature. Thin and oily, it twisted like water being wrung from a towel and dripping in the wrong direction–until it took form. From the oily blackness, a hand emerged, pushing aside the black slick as if drawing back curtains. Almadel stood before her inquisitive, already smoothing his outfit out as if he had arrived with something distasteful. He saw her and smiled politely. Mischievously. “Do you think about me in the shower often or is today a special day?”

Of all the things she might have reasonably expected to happen, Nis thought faintly, watching the ink on the card melting off of the card to drip and pool on the ground hadn’t even cracked the top ten. Hell, it didn’t crack the top hundred. She stared, wide-eyed, as the puddled ink stretched and bubbled and then flowed upwards against all logic. By the time it rippled into place and she saw a hand reaching through, she was over the worst of her shock. And when Almadel stepped through the inky ‘curtain’, she’d managed to at least pick her jaw up off of the floor.
And when the Merchant flashed a mischievous smile at her, she managed an amused snort, though her voice was a bit weak when she answered, "About as much as I think about anyone I might be calling at inopportune moments.”
The woods around the bridge were very, very quiet now and Nis wondered if all the little critters were sensitive to the use of big magic. Because, she thought, what the card had done wasn’t any kind of Mauvian tech. It had been magic. Or maybe they sensed that Almadel could be dangerous? Or maybe it was both. Who the hell even knew. Giving herself a shake, the Cosmos knight took a step to the side and gave Almadel a courteous bow. Manners must be observed, after all. “Welcome to my wonder,” she said, allowing herself a tiny smile. “I suspect it’s changed a bit since you were here last.” Given that, as far as she knew, the last time he’d been here everything was dead and dust, she hoped that this would be a nice little surprise for him. As she straightened, she grinned widely. Formalities had been followed. Now she could relax.
“I’m afraid I don’t have any tea brewing, but I do have some pretty damn good coffee going inside. Follow me.”
Her hand waved in a little ‘come along’ motion as she turned and headed for the tunnel. She wanted to see his reaction to everything and savor it. They could have a nice little visit before she got the scroll out to show him.
“Watch your head,” she warned before they got into the tunnel itself. “I’d be a terrible hostess if I let you brain yourself against a low ceiling. Especially since I need that beautiful brain of yours intact. I found something I think you’ll want to see.”

As she bowed, Almadel did the same–as much for manners as it was for fun, but his eyes were roaming the location as soon as he was upright again. She invited the examination, of course. He was eager to compare what it was now to what it was in his memory. Almadel was probably not as much of an open book as he presented, but he had no reason to behave as if he weren’t delighted to be here. There was a bounce in his step, and he walked with his hands behind him like a schoolkid who had been reminded to look, not touch. “Tea, coffee, it’s all the same. I, a gracious guest, will accept whatever my hostess offers. Your Wonder is lovely.” She should have been impressed at how quick his eyes could dart around without making himself dizzy. “Your teasing, just the same.” He ducked lower, obligingly, but the low ceiling didn’t seem like it would have caught him by surprise, anyway. “Don’t keep me guessing. You’ve found something interesting? I want to see, of course.”

Allowing herself the tiniest of fond eyerolls, Nis led the way, admiring Almadel’s restraint. As they walked, she tried to see things as the Merchant might. Sure, there was a fair bit of rigging going on, but overall, she thought she’d done fairly well for herself. And as they left the tunnel and entered the main cave, she felt even more pride. And a bit of smugness. The underground lake was glowing, as she’d hoped, and she could hear Tagg squeaking and splashing happily in the water.
Waving her hand towards the alive where she’d set up cushions and snacks, Nis moved sedately, settling herself comfortably before grinning at Almadel. “Maybe I am. Just a little. But you must admit that it’s not often that we get a chance to, hopefully, impress you. I’d like to savor the moment.”
She reached for a pair of cups and carefully poured coffee into each before passing one to the merchant and nodding towards a tray holding potential additives. Taking a careful sip, she settled back and nodded. “I have indeed and as per my promise, you’re the first one I’m telling.” She reached under one of the cushions and withdrew the box that contained the scroll she’d discovered. The box was old, rather worn and ragged looking and Nis handled it like spun glass. Handing it over, she took her cup back up and drained it.
“The box is nice, of course, but it’s what’s inside that I particularly wanted you to see,” she began. “I can’t read the blasted thing, but it must be of some importance. I found it in a very well-hidden little nook, locked up tight. I can show you the spot later, if you like. But for now, I am far more interested in what you make of what I dug up.”

Almadel settled in as easily as Nis had, with the confidence of someone who was not here on his first visit. He accepted the coffee and might have sampled the additives had he not immediately been more interested in the box. He downed the coffee in a single sip, swallowing it all at once before setting the empty cup down. His tail twitched with interest he made no effort to hide. Holding the box with as much care as she had, he turned it in his hands a few times over. “Hand carved is good, but I wouldn’t expect mass produced. No maker’s mark, sad. Not a bad thing if the intention was obscurity, of course.” Almadel took note of a few more details, though nothing was important enough to note. Yet. Especially considering what was inside. He opened the box with deft fingers, mindful of every careful touch. His eyes, eagerly fixed on the scroll, lit up. “Tell me more. You didn’t set off any traps, didn’t have any divine insight? Was the room well fortified? –Do you find things like this? Cosmos Wonders are treasure troves, you know. I’ve found many with hoards from all across the universe. It’s always a surprise,” he said excitedly. He hadn’t even made it to the content of the scroll; he was too busy examining the lining of the box and the texture of the paper.

Watching Almadel carefully, Nis managed to hide a tiny smile behind her cup. There was nothing quite like watching an expert reveling within their element! And any lingering doubts she may have harbored as to the Merchant’s expertise were swiftly eliminated. Sitting back, she enjoyed watching him for a moment before gathering her thoughts together to give him the most concise answers she could.
“No traps. I found it in a fairly well hidden little safe within one of the other alcoves to this cave, so I couldn’t say the place was well fortified. I did find an odd skeleton key out in the woods though that allowed me to access the safe. Sadly, that key changed after the one use.”
Obligingly, she withdrew the vaguely key shaped key from the cushions and placed it within reach of the Merchant should he want to inspect it. “As for divine insights, I’m afraid not. I was just cleaning this place up and trying to put it to rights. I literally happened upon the keyhole lock by accident. Now, I have found bits and pieces and scraps of things. The ones that didn’t turn to dust the moment I breathed in their direction are set aside. I am happy to let you root through them if you like. No great treasures though, aside from that scroll. For all I know, past me buried everything else out in those woods or dropped it into the lake to let it sink.”
She glanced towards the lake and her expression grew thoughtful. Now that those glowing flowers were there, maybe she could make a better exploration. But she’d still need diving gear to keep from drowning. “Now, I haven’t explored the lake too much yet. It gets very deep and dark in places and until recently, I really hadn’t had much light. But the starglow flowers seem to have solved that issue. I still have to lug some oxygen and a rebreather up here to really look, though. I’m a decent swimmer, but I cannot hold my breath indefinitely!” Nis chuckled a little before turning a very earnest expression on Almadel. “The only insights I’ve had here were focused on that lake, you know. I know I was the keeper for something very, very big that lived there. Maybe someday memory will wallop me with something more than seeing myself reflected in a huge eye.”

Almadel nodded approvingly, almost the entire time she recounted her adventure. He’d taken the key and examined that too, and hadn’t yet passed it back. “Well, let us hope that ‘past you’ left maps,” he hummed. “You’re a very good storyteller, you know. I’d like to hear more about your memories. When you have them.” An invitation for invitations, but Almadel was glad to have a free pass to visit anywhere. Especially somewhere as interesting as here. “This scroll is interesting,” he said, but he’d only just laid eyes on its contents. “It’s an old dialect. I don’t recognize some of these words. Of course, if you let me borrow it, I’m sure I could translate it back at my museum. I’ve got plenty of books.” He paused, lowered the paper to look at her, ‘ hmm’ed, and then returned to the scroll. “Of course, I’d understand if you wanted to barter something. Maybe,” he shrugged, and turned to face her. “Maybe I loan you something, and you loan me something, hm? I bet I could come up with something to make it worth your while.” He looked around the room. “You’ve got plenty of space here. I’d make it something good, of course.” His eyes returned to the paper, alight with interest. If he’d cared about a poker face, he could have pulled it off masterfully. He wasn’t even trying right now. His tail twitched and he moved his leg over it absentmindedly, as if to pin it in place, while he smiled sweetly at Nis.

Well damn. So much for the hope that he'd have been able to read it on the spot. Still, she kept a cheerful expression on her face and actually laughed a little. "You're shameless, friend," she murmured with a shake of her head. "I already gave you an invitation to drop in to visit years ago. It still stands."
Stretching a little from where she sat, she watched the Merchant carefully. He was telegraphing just how much he wanted to whisk that scroll away to study. And she was more than amenable to letting him. But his offer of a loan still startled her. Blinking, she tilted her head and tried to cover her confusion.
"I'm always open to trade with you, of course. But let me be frank, I was also fully planning on letting you keep that scroll since I can't read it to save my life and this isn't really an optimal place to keep such old things, is it." Doing her best to think quickly, she continued, "So, how about just a straight trade for the scroll, the box it came in and the key?" Now she grinned. "So, tempt me, my friend. I've seen your booth and your museum, so I've no doubt that you have something fascinating in mind. Just be sure to include telling me what the scroll says once you've had time to translate it."

Shameless, yes. Almadel laughed richly. "I dread the day I overstay my welcome, but if you insist I'm welcome," he smiled, somehow more sweet than devious, "I'll have to visit more often." He stretched out his legs and contemplated--deeply, judging by his very long, very melodious hmm. "It would be rude of me to make an offer and renege," he mused. "Not a courteous gesture in the face of your goodwill. So then, let us trade gifts. As is customary of friends." He left the scroll and box with her but rose, taking long strides across the room. He formed a square with his hands and closed one eye while framing different parts of the room with his fingers. Then, he took several steps, and seemed to be mentally calculating something, before he turned to her and grinned. "Some furniture, I think. To liven this place up. Let me bring you a mirror. You'll love it, I guarantee. It's beautiful, like you. Close your eyes," he said, and when she humored him, he hummed for a few seconds before announcing she could look. He stood, quite proudly, next to a stunning full length mirror. The silver frame had inlaid pastel, and was adorned with iridescent crystals. It looked uniquely Cosmos--and uniquely expensive. "Come, come take a look," he insisted, gesturing for her to join him.

"I insist and consider a visit from you to be among the highest honors," Nis answered with a grin and half bow from where she sat. She held her peace while he thought, though her curiosity was beyond piqued. And when he suggested trading gifts as friends, she nodded agreeably, though her expression quickly turned mystified as he got up to examine and mentally measure the cavern.
Furniture? Well, she did like nice pieces and something that she didn't personally have to lug up could be nice. Before she could ask why a mirror, his compliment hit her between the metaphorical eyes and she found herself floundering and flushing. It had been a while since anyone had called her beautiful. Of course, he could just be flattering her, but she was happy enough to let him. Closing her eyes dutifully, she even went so far as to place her hands over her eyes, laughing a little. All she could hear was his humming. No whispers of movement. And then, he told her she could look.
Lowering her hands and opening her eyes, she stared, dumbfounded at the mirror that now stood beside the Merchant. It oozed antiquity and was, without a doubt, one of the loveliest things she'd ever seen. Standing slowly, she moved towards Almadel and the mirror, eyes wide as she continued to examine it.
"It's gorgeous," she murmured, taking a moment to reach out and trail her fingertips along an edge. "Where did you manage to find this? I've never seen anything like it..." She turned to beam at the Merchant before taking a step to stand before the mirror. She looked for a second before yelping in shock and stumbling back. Looking from Almadel to the Mirror and back again, she tried to make her voice work. The reflection she'd seen hadn't been one she recognized.
Taking a deep breath, she got back in front of the mirror and took a good, hard look. "What sort of mirror is this?" she asked softly. Almadel doubtless had some purpose in offering this mirror. She didn't think for a moment it was a malevolent one. But she wanted some explanation for why there as a horned and hooved girl looking back out at her.

“A magic mirror,” Almadel answered gleefully, in that tone of his that said he was having too much fun but trying to stay professional. He watched her closely, wearing an expression that said more than he chose to speak. “Didn’t I say? Oh, well. Let’s just call it part of the surprise. Shall I bring you another…? I mean, if you don’t like this one…” No, he knew she did. He had a penchant for such things, and he rarely chose wrong. He was teasing her, and enjoying it, judging by the way his tail enthusiastically danced behind him. “I have a great deal of treasures unlike anything you’ll find on Earth. Maybe one day you can come exploring with me? In the old days, Cosmos Knights actually used to get into a lot of trouble. Not all of them, but.” When he stood before the mirror, his reflection was his own, but he seemed more interested in looking at hers than his. “Enough of them. I got along with some of them very well, you know. Some of them liked to give me a hard time.” At this, he laughed. “I never thought I’d miss it. But the universe is so big, and so lonely.” He clapped her on the back gently, “All the more reasons to see my friends treated well.”

Reacting more to the obvious glee in his voice than his words, Nis found herself laughing and shaking her head. “Well, yes. That part is obvious, my friend. And I like it very much and will bite you if you try to take it back. But I really need to know why my reflection isn’t… well. Mine.”
Though the more she looked, she found herself wondering. Now that the initial shock was gone, she could see hints and traces that reminded her of hazy and far away things. And she couldn’t deny that the horned girl’s eyes were very like her own. An ancestor perhaps? Except that she knew that she was a direct reincarnation. So why would the mirror show her some long dead great granny?
Her thoughts were torn from this line of musing as Almadel’s words registered. Turning to face him with a smile, she nodded eagerly. “I’d like to come with you on one of your little adventures, I think,” she began before the far more important words really hit. “Did you know many of us back then? “
The tone was mostly innocent, though there was a hint of edge that indicated she badly wanted to ask him just how old he was. But that would have been unforgivably rude. Instead, she paused and considered. The universe was very big. And lonely indeed, if he’d had so many friends perish. No, she wouldn’t ask him about his age. Instead, she took advantage of how he stood beside her and lifted herself onto her toes just enough to brush his cheek with her lips in a friendly kiss. “Well, I can only hope that if you knew me in the way back when I wasn’t a horrible stick in the mud. If Cosmos Knights were troublemakers, it seems I have something of a reputation to forge and or uphold.”
Turning her attention back to the reflection, she found herself wondering. Taking what she could see with what Almadel was saying and she found herself pointing at the horned girl. “That was me back then, wasn’t it. I don’t look too spoilsport-ish, but appearances can deceive.”
She grinned a little at the back clap and words that came with it. “So long as you let your friends return the favor, I’ve no objections. So. Have I guessed the mirror’s secret? I’m simply dying to know if I’m close or not.”
