Kyoya didn't really mind dogs. Ne liked nis cousin's sibling's dog, Cersei, plenty well. But ne didn't normally deal with much of the day-to-day care, other than occasionally filling the water bowl. Handling pets wasn't in nis usual repertoire. Today, however, it became necessary for Kyoya to be the one taking Cersei for a walk. Ne thought ne could handle it; after all, Cersei was reasonably well-trained, according to Kiyoshi.

Ne obviously had not accounted for how Cersei was approximately seventy pounds of pure muscle. A squirrel skittered across their path, too close, and all was lost in an instant. Cersei yanked, Kyoya's arm nearly dislocated, and the leash ripped free of nis hand.

"Cersei! Come back here!" Kyoya shouted, immediately sprinting after the escape artist dog, but Cersei didn't listen.

Kyoya winced when Cersei slammed into the legs of a random bystander that the squirrel darted past. At least it finally stopped Cersei in her tracks.

"I'm so sorry," Kyoya wheezed as they jogged up to the stranger. "She's a beast of a dog. Nearly pulled my arm off."

Kalani was just taking a meander through the park - her home, more or less, as she was currently sleeping up in a tree a few minutes' walk away. She knew it was unsustainable, but it wasn't like she had any other options, or even any other way to find other options. She was a stranger in a strange land, and she knew next to nothing about the world in which she had found herself.

Well, not technically true. She knew that the loud, mean creatures that frequented the park with their Earthling caretakers were called dogs, and she knew that dogs were fast, made a terrible ruckus, and had an alarming fascination with the small furry rodents that Kalani shared her treehome with. It was the furry rodent that caught her attention, darting between her legs, running from--

Oh no--

And then she was on the ground, half trampled beneath the dog's paws. Teeth, claws, breathing hard--

Kalani's heart was beating hard in her chest as the dog was reclaimed by its Earthling, and she scrambled to her feet, eyes wide.

"You--you should--if she can't be controlled, she shouldn't be--" Kalani pressed a hand to her chest and let out a breath, blinking rapidly as she tried to get herself back under control.

Kalani did not like dogs.

"Usually, she's better behaved," Kyoya said, wincing. "Cersei, sit."

Cersei backed up and sat beside Kyoya, looking up at nem with her tongue hanging out happily, tail whipping across the ground and stirring up leaves.

"I guess she just liked your smell. I am really sorry," ne emphasized. "She didn't try to bite you or anything, did she?"

Kyoya would absolutely die if Cersei had gotten away from nem and also bitten someone.

"No," Kalani admitted, a little reluctantly, giving the dog a severe glance as she spoke. "No, she did not bite me. I am fine." Physically, anyway. She squinted at the dog as the human mentioned her smell - could this dog tell that she was not of Earth? Could dogs do that?

Probably. Dogs were - strange. She didn't understand them, and she did not particularly trust them. Mauvians were normal enough, which meant that Earthling cats were...acceptable. But dogs? She couldn't tell what they were thinking, and they were so - impulsive and loud. Cats - Mauvians - did not howl or bark or snarl. Usually. Then again, she had seen Earthling cats fight each other in alleys before, and they did get loud then, but - even then, they made a certain sort of sense to her.

Dogs, on the other hand. She felt that if she took her eyes off them - this one in particular, even - for even a moment, they would do something absolutely unpredictable, messy, and possibly dangerous.

"Thank you for your concern," Kalani added, returning her attention back to the human before her. "What is your name, if I may ask?" She couldn't help the slight wariness in her voice; she had learned that Earthlings were all - one was so different from the next, there was no way to predict what kind of human this one might be. Kind or cruel, it was too soon to say, but - at least this Earthling seemed appropriately apologetic for losing grip of the canine creature.

That, at least, entitled this Earthling to what remained of her half-remembered politeness, etiquette nearly forgotten in the centuries since it had been taught to her. Do not assume evil until evil presents itself - a saying that didn't quite translate, but one that was true, still. She hoped.

"I'm Kyoya," ne answered, trying to gauge how much ne felt like socializing. Well... ne did have to make a lot of new friends, thanks to the purification. Ne rolled their shoulders and patted Cersei on the head, smiling a little as the dog's eyes shut and tail wagged in bliss.

"And this mongrel's name is Cersei. I promise, she's calmer now." Digging into nis pocket, ne produced one of Cersei's favorite dog treats.

"Say please," ne told Cersei, holding the treat out temptingly. Cersei rose up on her haunches, crossing her front paws in front of her chest, and let out a very soft woof. "Good girl!"

Kyoya moved the treat to Cersei's snout and snorted as Cersei gently took it, licking nis hand, and returned to her seated position.

Kalani raised her eyebrows as the dog did, in fact, actually almost say 'please', out loud. In her own doggish way.

Well. See something new every day when you've been on a new planet for hardly any time whatsoever.

"That...was a little bit impressive," Kalani admitted, still a little reluctant to acknowledge dogs as anything other than mysterious beasts. "Is she yours?"

Kyoya gave Kalani a half-smile. Good. Hopefully that cute little trick meant they were forgiven.

"She's my brother's, mostly," ne admitted. "But she'll listen to me 99% of the time. Every once in a blue moon, she just seems to smell someone she can't resist meeting. Dogs can smell a lot of things about a person, you know. She probably thinks you're cool and mysterious and a good person. She's kind of got a knack for guiding us to people that... might need help, in one way or another. One could say the cosmos themselves might be involved."

With that little hint drop, Kyoya offered a treat from the bag to Kalani. "Want to give her one? Use the same command I did."

Ne wondered if this person had any idea of the magical underbelly of the city, or if they were completely and utterly normal. Something just felt... like Kalani wasn't normal. Kyoya could play it off if necessary.

Kalani blinked in surprise. She had only been on Earth for a very short time, but she didn't think that 'the cosmos themselves' was a common phrase among regular, non-magical humanoids. At least, she hadn't overheard a single person say it, in her time spent up in the tree.

And it was getting colder. She didn't really enjoy staying in the tree - it wasn't nearly as comfortable as the trees on her homeworld. And the squirrels...

Kalani looked from Kyoya to the dog to the treat, the latter of which she took, albeit hesitantly.

"Say please," Kalani said dubiously, admittedly surprised - and a little bit delighted - when the dog did the trick once more. Kalani obediently gave the dog the treat, giving a weird little squirmy shiver when the dog's tongue slobbered it up in one go.

She looked back at Kyoya. "I do not know if I am...cool, unless you mean the temperature. If so, not right now, but it does get cold in this park at night." Kalani conisdered the other adjectives provided. "I do not know about mysterious. But I would like to think that I am a good person." Kalani gave a slight shrug, fidgeting slightly before she continued, a little nervously. "And...I may need help." The squirrels. She couldn't stand many more nights with the squirrels. "I am from...a long way away," she explained, "and I do not know anyone here. In fact, I feel quite...alien...among the people here," she said, wondering if that would make it clear enough, if Kyoya was trying to say what Kalani thought. If not, then it would just come off...slightly strange. And Kalani could move on - she was used to coming off slightly strange here on Earth, and she doubted that she would never be able to fully 'blend'. She also wasn't sure she wanted to.

But if Kyoya wasn't saying what Kalani thought, then Kalani had maybe said too much, and she would need to leave the human and the dog both a healthy distance away from her - for her own safety. Not all humans were trustworthy, and Kalani had not survived the Chaos of her own planet for some little human to take her life now.

Kyoya couldn't help a half-grin at the words. Good. Ne'd been right.

"Come on then," ne said quietly, glancing around. Nobody close enough to spy on them. "If you're in need of a place to stay, my brother and I help people in need, especially people who need a place free from chaos after their, uh, long time without any peace and order."

Patting Cersei, who snuffled at nis hand for more treats, ne turned and headed towards home, gesturing for Kalani to follow.

Kalani's eyebrows raised further and she gave Kyoya a smile back, the first non-shy, non-hesitant smile she'd had on her face since the dog bowled her over. If Kyoya was an enemy of Chaos, then Kyoya was a friend of Kyoya's.

Without a second thought, Kalani followed.
