Alex read over the letter again as if the words on the slip of paper might have somehow changed since the last time he had read them or the time before that, but no such luck. After the attack from the Windurians and the realization that protecting Ivy was more important to him than even living, the duke had a hard conversation with himself. And then he had written a letter asking for Ivy’s hand in marriage. He’d almost choked on how unready he felt, but the truth was that she was in him now and he didn’t want it any other way. He needed her, he wanted to marry her. He was in love with her.

And she was already engaged to someone else.

The words were plain on the page and Alex’s gaze unfocused a bit as he read them again. Already promised to another. Did she even know? Alex wasn’t too sure that she did. Ivy wasn’t exactly great at keeping secrets and this was a pretty big one to keep. ********. It didn’t exactly sound like her parents were open to negotiation, either. He was still going to respond and give it a try, but… ******** wanted to be angry. Not at Ivy, of course; even if she had known, he didn’t think he could hold it against her. He could hold it against her parents easily enough, though. Or hell, maybe he’d hold it against the whole damned universe. He finally found one thing, one good thing, that he wanted to keep and he couldn’t have her. But instead of anger, he just felt… beaten. And that was way ******** worse.

So he did the only thing he could do. He told Ivy to meet him here, in the art room, after their classes. Way to ******** nostalgia bait himself; it was here that he first really talked to Ivy. And she was wearing that really cute but ridiculous dress and heels to paint in. Then she dropped her brush and got paint right on her boob; lucky ******** paint brush got to touch her before he did. Not that his stupid a** had realized that he even could touch her; she had to spell that out for him. Alex smiled a little at the memory despite the weight of the single sheet of paper in his hand.

Well, whatever. It wasn’t like he was going to stop seeing her. At least, not unless she wanted him to. That was a risk, but it was one he had to take. Ivy had the right to know if her future had already been sold to some p***k from Shahiti. At least it was a better course of action than finding that guy and punching him right in the wedding tackle.

It had been forever since she'd last seen Alex. Assuming that forever actually meant 'since yesterday'. But she hadn't seen him today and that felt like forever because they were just simply so in love. So in love that he'd taken her virginity after history class. And grown even more in love after that and showing it by keeping her safe and in one piece doing the very scary and totally not going to happen again according to the teachers attack on the school like the big, brave, strong knight in black armor he was.

So of course when she was told to meet in the art room she found herself hustling there. It was the room where it all started, after all. Where she met Alex for the very first time when he'd scared her out of an art haze. Was he going to do something impossible romantic to her now that they had been together for two whole months? The idea had spurred her into wearing white, like she was going to her wedding. If a wedding involved a bodice that was barely clinging to her chest and a skirt that was fighting for it's life with every step she took.

Pushing into the room, she found him waiting. A delighted squeak came out of her mouth as she hustled over to his side. Only.... He didn't look as delighted as she did. Actually he looked pretty down in the dumps. A small frown tugged at her lips as she reached out and took his hands. Swinging their arms lightly she looked up at him, confusion swirling in her eyes. "What's wrong?"

                                                                ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Leave it to Ivy to show up wearing all white like it was her wedding. Also leave it to Ivy to somehow be wearing so little actual dress that it was more like the wedding night after all the guests were kicked out. It made him smile a little, even as his stomach felt sick over it. He’d be lucky if he was one of the wedding guests; some other a*****e was walking away with the prize. Who even was this guy? Did he really know Ivy at all or was it just the usual political bullshit? Would he care about her paintings? Feed the ducks with her? Rail her in undisclosed locations around the school, alright he’d be an idiot if he didn’t do that one. Or a eunuch. Gay, maybe.

Ivy could tell something was up, not that Alex was surprised. Even he could tell that his smile wasn’t as wide as it usually was, especially with Ivy around. He was down and there was no denying it. He’d hoped to at least greet her properly and ease into the bad news, but maybe it was better this way. If she knew something was wrong, he could just spill it without making things too awkward.

She took his hands in her smaller ones and Alex’s smile grew three sizes or some s**t. It was hard not to get his heart all warmed up when she was swinging their arms and just being too ******** cute for words. The last thing he wanted to do was burst his own bubble and talk about something as shitty as her going off to marry some a*****e who probably wouldn’t even want to do random cute s**t with her. ******** d**k.

”Hey. Sorry; guess my stupid face gave it away, huh? Not sure how to say it really, so I’ll just let it drop. So… you’re engaged. Just found out in a letter from your parents and I didn’t think you’d know yet. You should’ve been the first to ******** know, but whatever; at least I’m telling you now.” Alex looked like he might say more, but nothing came out. What does this mean for us now? He needed to know, but he didn’t want to. He didn’t want anything to change. Well, he did… of course he did. He wanted to marry her, but he ******** couldn’t. So at the very least he didn’t want anything to change between them unless it had to. Could he ask her for that? Would she agree to it?

She didn't stop swinging their hands as he spoke. Not as her face scrunched up and she attempted to process everything that Alex had just told her. He'd written a whole letter to her parents. And now she was engaged. She was engaged. Grey eyes looked up for their slowing hands to find Alex's. "To you?" The question was innocent, too confident.

                                                                No.

Even to her romantic heart that didn't make sense. He'd written to her parents. If her engagement had been part of the conversation he must have been... asking for her hand? The very idea had her heart fluttering in her chest and a heat forming low in her belly. Alex wanted her. Alex wanted her. Forever. In the kind of way she always wanted to be wanted. And she wanted that back. With him.

But he was upset. That didn't make sense if he was going to marry her... Right? Their hands were still now and she was searching his face for the words he wasn't saying. Trying her best to read between the lines. Knowing full well what she wanted. Fat tears were gathering in her eyes as she stepped closer into Alex, looking at him with a mix of heartbreak and hope. "To you, right?"

Alex watched Ivy puzzle out what he was saying, her nose scrunched up like she did whenever she was thinking or didn’t quite understand something. It was ******** cute; usually that expression alone was enough to make him smile. Normally he liked explaining stuff to her, but this time he didn’t even want to have to understand it. The swinging of their hands slowed before Ivy asked if she was engaged to him. It was heart breaking, even more so when those words made him think she would have been happier if he could have said yes. They would have both been happier.

Their hands had stopped moving and Alex lifted hers to his mouth to press a kiss to her knuckles. He could barely look at her as he tried to swallow around the lump in his throat. She asked again, but it was clear from her damp eyes, still hoping but knowing better, that she knew his answer already.

”That’s what I wanted, but I was too ******** late. It’s some ********… some prince from Shahiti. They didn’t give me his name.” That was probably the smartest choice Ivy’s parents had made since Alex was in the mood to cause an international incident. Not that it would have done him any good; Ivy would still be marrying the a*****e. But hell, maybe he’d get his a** caved in and be too high on pain meds to think about it for a while.

Alex drew Ivy into his arms, kissed her hair and ran a hand over her back. ”I’m sorry. It’s really shitty you had to find out like this and hear it from me, but you needed to know. God, I’m a ******** piece of s**t; I’ve never even told you… I never said I love you. Not until now, when I’ve got to lose you. ********. I’m so ******** stupid.” No, none of that was helping. He shouldn’t be feeling sorry for himself, at least not right then with Ivy there.

”I know this isn’t easy to hear, but whatever I can do to take the sting out of it, I’m here. If you need to yell or cry or hit something, I’m right here. Whatever you need.” Okay, so punching things was more his forte, but s**t, maybe it would still help. He knew he was going to take his frustration out on one unlucky punching bag later himself, for sure. Less satisfying than punching a Shahiti prince, but it would have to do.

Somehow it didn't surprise her that his answer was no, even as it made the tears pooling in her eyes spill over into messy black tracks down her face. There was a part of her that wanted to be dramatic. That wanted to drop to the floor and declare that it wasn't fair. That her parents had never asked her or told her that she was already engaged. And to a man she didn't even know.

But most of her felt numb. Unsurprised, but numb. The longer she spent in this school meeting people, the more she'd been starting to notice just how off her upbringing was. Mostly in little ways, like the fact that nearly every single one of her peers had been given more than a single bedroom to spend their lives in even if they were also sheltered. Or the fact that she wasn't allowed to attend a ball ever before. Nor did she think anyone else had ever been expected to drool directly in a bucket, but that one was still up for debate. Everyone she'd actually asked had been so shocked by the question they didn't answer. Which wasn't a no, but even Ivy was starting to find that a little suspect.

So should it really surprise her that they would decide on an engagement without her input? The question lingered in her mind as she was pulled in, her mind and body kickstarting back to life with the feeling of Alex's lips pressing to her head and his hand running up her spine. A breath shuddered out of her half way between a sigh and a sob. Then her arms were coming up to brace herself against his chest. Her fingers dug into the fabric of his shirt as she resisted the urge to rub her face into him like it would mark him as hers. Really all that would accomplish would be rubbing her already running makeup into his shirt. And she'd worked hard on making it look nice.

Finally she shook her head, finding her voice. "You shouldn't apologize for them." There was so much more to say. That he wasn't a piece of s**t. That she didn't want this. What she wanted was him. She loved him. So much that she wanted to see him last before she went to bed and first when she woke up. That she wanted to share her waffles with him every morning as he smoothed down her bedhead in the kitchen where he found her after sneaking down there despite their cook's protests.

Her teeth found the inside of her cheek, gnawing on it as the numbness gave way to feeling like her entire body was vibrating. Her eyes cast down, looking at the way her chest pressed against his but not really taking it in as she attempted to find the right words to say. Were there even right words to say? "This is kind of normal for them." If there were, those certainly weren't it.

Her nose crinkled again. Like if she could just think hard enough she could come up with a solution to all of their problems. Just completely erase her engagement from existence to poof! And then spend the rest of her life with Alex and whoever else they invited to their bed... Wait. Was that normal? Ivy wasn't even entirely sure if she was allowed to stay with him if she was married. In all her books the main characters just were happy with their one person once they had the happily ever after. What if that's what was expected of her?

Wide eyes looked up at him, trying to search his face like it held all the answers. "Does this mean we can't see each other anymore even if I love you too?" More hot tears were dripping down her cheeks now, the vibrating feeling suddenly going extremely still. "I don't want that." That wasn't how the books worked. True love was always supposed to win. So why wasn't it winning now?

                                                                ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Ivy wasn’t wrong; it didn’t make sense for him to apologize for the actions of her dead parents but he was still sorry. He hated being the bearer of bad news, especially this bad news. He was barely handling it himself. He didn’t even know what to do except hold her while she cried. And he wasn’t supposed to do that; she was engaged to someone else. Not that it would stop him, but how long could he just ignore it? How long could he just hold onto Ivy and pretend that she was his? How long would she let him do that?

This was normal for them. Those words made Alex angry; so angry that he nearly snapped out a response before he could swallow it down. They weren’t here; if Alex spit venom just now, the only person who would be poisoned by it was Ivy. And that was the one kind of poison she wasn’t immune to. He released his breath in a controlled sigh and gave Ivy a tight squeeze. ”Well, they’re ******** wrong. Arranging a marriage is pretty normal, but it’s ******** crazy that I knew before you did.” The words were nasty, but at least he had managed to calm his tone drastically. He didn’t want to shout at Ivy because her parents were assholes.

Ivy looked up at him and asked if this meant they couldn’t see each other any more. And a part of Alex wanted to imagine he could just tell her it was fine, that nothing had to change, but that was a lie. He didn’t even lie to people he didn’t like without a damned good reason; he wasn’t going to lie to the woman he loved. Not even when it hurt to tell the truth.

”He’s not going to want you to see me. Don’t know much about Shahiti, but in a lot of places, you’re expected to marry that one person and be with that one person. That’s it, forever. Hell, it’s pretty normal not to go ******** anybody before that. But I don’t want that, either.” Alex hesitated as he thought about what he wanted to say. Even with telling her the truth about it, he wasn’t sure it was fair to ask her to still be with him. He was most of what she’d ******** known up to now and that was going to affect any decision she made here; he wasn’t being fair at all. But he didn’t think he could let her go without her knowing how he felt about it.

Alex looked down into pale, damp eyes ringed in streaked mascara as he said what he had to, consequences be damned. ”Listen, Ivy… I’m a selfish a*****e for saying this, but I gotta say it. I don’t want to stop seeing you and I’m not ******** going to unless you tell me to back off. You’re going to get married to some a*****e and he’ll for sure take you far away from me, but it won’t be today. I don’t want to let you go until he ******** rips you right out of my arms. You don’t have to say anything right now. I want you to think about it, cause I’m asking a lot. Your fiance’s going to be ******** pissed I’m hanging around his future wife. I don’t care, but you’ve got a right to decide if you do. Alright?”

Despite the tears that were dripping down her face, Ivy was still trying to puzzle out what the right things to say were. Trying to figure out how they could twist this situation to suck less. Or not suck at all. There had to be some way to vaguely unsuck it. Her eyes trailed down his form, thinking of other things that would be worth it to suck...

Shaking her head, she snapped herself back on track. They were focusing. On their very sucky situation. On the way his brow furrowed at her admission about her parents. Reaching up to rub her finger over the angry line there, she attempted to soothe it out. "I don't think a lot of things about me are normal." Months in this new place was showing her that. From her wants and desires to what she considered normal, there was always something that she was doing differently from everyone else or some way she was tripping the people around her up.

His confession that they couldn't just be together anyway felt like being ripped in two. Like he was smashing a little hole in her chest that she could never, ever fill up again. Ivy thought she knew loneliness. She'd spent hours watching people from her windows, painting up dreams from her tower that involved getting to be a part of the world below. Now that she knew what it was like to not be lonely, the idea of returning to that filled her with a whole lot of something. Fear? Sadness? Some deep, almost painful mix of the two? A fresh wave of tears were tumbling down messily down her cheeks as she attempted to parse the feeling.

Biting on her lower lip, her gaze flicked down like the idea that was flittering around in her mind like an elusive dragonfly would be written out down there for her to be able to ask it. It wasn't. Which was stupid, but she would have to make due. "Would he..." Her hand reached out, threading her fingers through Alex's for comfort at the thought. "Would he lock me up again?" Finally her eyes trailed back up, catching his in a way that seemed significant. Like they were at some great edge and they were either going to fly or fall.

Offering him a tiny shake of her head, her mouth opened recklessly. "I don't want to stop." She fidgeted for a moment, trying to figure out how to explain to him what was going through her mind. "We can fix this probably. If we're thinking more clearly. But I just..." She trailed off, her hand shifting out of his so that she could wrap her arms around Alex's middle. She was still confused about what she was feeling and that confusion was making her exhausted. Letting herself droop a little, Ivy rested her head on his shoulder. "I'm the only one who can touch you like this, so it's gotta mean something." Or, at least, in books it did.

                                                                ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Ivy was too good for him anyway; he knew that. Alex wasn’t really calm, but the way her thumb rubbed over the angry crease of his brow did soothe him. She deserved so much better than some jerk who was ranting and cursing like this was something awful done to him and not her. But who was to say that Shahiti p***k was really any better than he was? Did he even know her? Would he care about her? Would this asshat ever love Ivy like he did?

Alex hated to admit it, but Ivy was definitely right about her not being normal. It wasn’t that it was a bad thing, he loved all of her weird little traits and habits, but he hated the very not normal raising that led up to this moment. They didn’t even think their daughter needed to be ******** aware that she was going to be married? What the ********? Alex sighed and resisted the urge to mutter that it still wasn’t right.

When Ivy looked down, Alex struggled to find something else to say. Something comforting, something that would make this whole conversation suck at least one ounce less of a**. Instead Ivy spoke up again, weaving her fingers between his and lifting her gaze as her fears were manifested in words. The thought of the Shahiti p***k locking Ivy away again had something black, ugly, and unrelenting come over Alex and he spat out his next words between snarling lips before he could have hoped to think them out.

”I’ll kill him.”

He didn’t even know the a*****e and had no idea how he planned to just slip into the Shahiti palace to merc the ******** prince. Alex rubbed a hand over his face with a groan. Knowing it was a logistics nightmare didn’t change how he felt about it even a little bit; he’d ******** bury the piece of s**t if he had to. He needed to look into this guy, see what he could dig up. ”Maybe he’s a decent guy. He ******** better be. I won’t let anyone do that to you again. I don’t care how I have to do it; I’ll ******** end him if he tries.”

She didn’t want to stop seeing him. Even in the midst of his prematurely murderous thoughts, Alex felt something light flutter in his chest, threatening to break free from the hot and tight anger that had settled there. He didn’t see how they could fix anything, but that stupid fluttering thing clung to the scrap of hope like a lifeline. Alex kissed the top of Ivy’s head and just breathed her in, holding on tightly like he never wanted to let go. Because he didn’t.

”It means everything to me. You mean everything to me.”

It was more than just her being able to touch him. God that was amazing and he never got tired of it, even just holding her hand or touching her back or anything, just anything to feel her soft, warm skin against his, but it was more than just that. It was everything about her. It was the way everything was so new to her and her eyes lit up at stuff that normally didn’t mean anything to him anymore. It was the way she sometimes said crazy things, like asking why anyone would pitch a tent in a classroom. It was the way she was just as goddamned horny for everyone as he was, ******** maybe even hornier than he was. It was the way she looked wearing his old sweater as a dress and the cute little grateful smile she’d give him when he wrapped his hoodie around her. It was the way she got so engrossed in her painting and had to pause and think about which mug was coffee and which was turpentine. It was the way she’d sit there with stars in her eyes while he played her a silly love song because he was too much of a dumb ******** to understand his own feelings and just come out with them. It was everything Ivy; he ******** loved her.

”Maybe we can fix it.” Alex heard the hope spill out from his lips. He wanted to believe it because he was a goddamned idiot. But he was an idiot in love. He wouldn’t stop trying to think of… something. He wasn’t sure what. It was still maybe just a little premature to off a prince and set off an international incident, at least until the still nameless, faceless usurper actually tried anything stupid. What was he even thinking right now? That he’d start the damned war again just to be with Ivy? He didn’t want it to come to that, but that wasn’t the same as saying he wouldn’t do it. So this was how it felt to go crazy. He’d finally lost the rest of his marbles.

His arms were locked tight around her as she cried. He was also muttering some pretty meanie things about killing and murder. Normally she would screw up her face and ask why it needed to come to that. Right now though? Right now it was starting to sound pretty reasonable. If that was the only way they could be together would it be worth it?

It was starting to feel like it.

Or had it already felt like that long before?

Her thoughts felt like a tangled ball of string that she was struggling to follow. Maybe a kitten had batted it around and made it so messy? The idea of her mental kitten made her smile into Alex's neck as his lips pressed into her head. His arms felt safe and warm, like a home she'd always wanted but had never gotten to know. Even if the man her parents said she was going to marry was a decent guy, did that really matter?

Her smile shifted to a frown, the thought rattling her. Had it ever mattered like that before? It wasn't something she'd really thought about. Not before now anyway. And the answer that it did matter was a bit of a shocking revelation. Other people had always been pretty, distant things that she wanted to press against without clothes on. A misty, shadowy force in her imagination that didn't really have a personality and could shift and shape to whatever whim she had in the moment.

But Alex was Alex. He had become her home. From the way he looked at her like all her broken little bits of understanding was beautiful to the way he was patient with her and wanted to help her learn more. She was the duck he was throwing little scraps of bread to, and she was greedy for every last piece of him. Somehow in a way she didn't think she was for anyone else. Which was something else she didn't quite understand, but also that she had context for. This had been what all of those books meant, though this knowledge didn't simmer down the way she wanted other people. It just told her who she wanted to be a constant.

                                                                Her forever.

The realization had her pulling back. Not enough that she was out of his arms, but enough that she could reach up and rub the tears out of her eyes and onto her sleeves. It was a messy affair. She probably looked like a panda. A really smudged, wet panda. Looking down at them for a minute she realized that they were a mess of black eyeliner and mascara. That was okay though. She would need a different wedding dress now that he had seen this one. Her maids could just dye it black or something.

Reaching up now that her face was less wet, she cupped her hands around his jaw. "I think I fairytale love you." She leaned forward, pressing her lips lightly to his. It was tempting to lean into his heat and take more. Normally she wouldn't stop herself. Somehow, for once, it felt wrong. Like this wasn't what the moment needed. Wasn't what she needed. "And it always gets fixed in fairytales so it'll get fixed for us." She just didn't know how yet.

                                                                ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Slowly Alex began thinking of what he would need to do. There wasn’t much that he could do yet, but he could at least have his people look into the Prince of Shahiti. He knew the kingdom got a bad rap, but s**t, so did Corthyr whether it was deserved or not. He needed real intel if it was about Ivy’s future. If he really just couldn’t have her, then he needed to know that the guy who would wouldn’t hurt her or mistreat her. But how could he really know that? How could he be sure of any man but himself? Was it too soon to start casting around for an assassin, just in case? Not a Corthyrian; poison wouldn’t do the trick if Ivy was involved. She’d probably even save the a*****e willingly; she was just great like that.

As Alex was considering which kingdoms he had the most personal ties to and what merits they offered, Ivy pulled back to dry her tears. Her face was a mess, her mascara smeared over her face and sleeves. Her eyes would probably be puffy and red after this. Still, she was so beautiful. Tragically, undeniably beautiful. He didn’t want to ever let her go, she had his whole ******** heart in her hands.

Those hands then captured his face and Ivy said the kind of the thing that just ******** melted him completely. He had to smile, in spite of himself. ”Yeah. That’s how I love you, too. Like a fairytale, like the only good and right ending is you and me together.” He’d never felt like this and he didn’t think he ever would or could again; Ivy was just too damned special. She was the one. ********, she was the one and he was losing her.

But Alex still smiled, because Ivy still pressed her lips gently to his and told him that it always got fixed in fairytales. He knew better than to believe in that, but ******** if he didn’t want to right then, for her. He could believe it for her, at least for right now. ”You’re right. God, I ******** love you. You’re beautiful, you know that?” He gently pressed a kiss to each of her eyelids. Maybe he’d wind up with black stained lips, but he didn’t care. He was having a ******** moment with the best girl in the world.

”We’ll figure something out. And then we’ll make our fairytale come true.” Or maybe he’d hire that assassin after all and disappear in some neutral country with Ivy and whatever cash he could scrounge up. Yeah, he might have to do that. But for right now, he’d believe in a fairytale ending for a little bit longer.
