Much of her time since coming to this school was spent with new people. Nadia, Akwasi, Gabriel, Mirabella. All of them were new faces that Aleithia had found herself enjoying the company of. Even Fran and Mary, who were still so much more intimidating to her than she knew how to express. Outside of a handful of afternoons teas, she hadn't gotten to have much time with either of her siblings.
Which was why she was sitting on Evie's loveseat curled up into a perfect ball under her nightgown listening to her sister talk about their last art class and the people she had gotten to meet. Or. Well. Re-meet. Considering one of the others in her group was one of their country's dukes. One that the mention of had made Aleithia scrunch her nose in response. She didn't know Duke Levi well, but she had heard stories. Ones that made her think maybe she didn't want to know him all that well.
Hugging Poppy closer to her chest - a silly thing, really, that she had brought her to Evie's room in the first place but it felt better to curl up and catch up getting to hug her - she looked up at her sister with awe in her purple eyes. "You might be the strongest person I know Evie." What little awe could bleed into her voice did, her voice just as inexpressive as her face on the best of days. But it didn't stop her words from sounding a little lighter, a little higher, with Aleithia's surprise. "I can't believe you hit him."
Part of her wanted to curl up against her sisters chest like she was a little girl again. Like they did when she would read to Evelyn after she'd woken up. It had been much better than before she'd woken up. The nurses would make her sit next to the bed like being close to her sister was wrong. But once Evie had opened her eyes? She'd been allowed to clamber up into bed to snuggle into Evie's side while reading whatever interesting story she could find with pictures. It had been one of the reasons she'd accidentally stumbled into Alain Miranda's work. Or should she call him Gabriel now? Alei still didn't know.
What she did know was that she didn't want to go back to her room even though curfew was quickly approaching. She'd missed Evelyn. More than she had realized. Now that they were spending time together again all she wanted to do was stay together. Hesitantly, she finally asked the question she'd been wondering for the last thirty minutes. "Evie... Can I stay with you tonight?" Hopefully Nadia wouldn't come by her room tonight. Or, if she did, she would understand.

Between sparring drills that left her too sore to sleep and nights buried beneath a fortress of class notes, she had to memorize, which always felt impossible. Evie had somehow let the days slip by without seeing her siblings. Each morning she'd make a mental note, Find time for Alei and Stephanie, and each evening, that note would be buried under exhaustion or forgetfulness.
But tonight was different, tonight, she had finally carved out the time. No excuses, no last-minute distractions. She sat on the edge of her bed, one leg tucked under her, watching her younger sister from across the room. Alei was nestled into the oversized loveseat, her soft smile fixed on Evie like she was saying something worth listening to. It felt so… calm and easy. Evie had been rambling, she knew that, spilling out everything she went through over the past few weeks. Her sister looked at her like she wasn’t still the girl who was once stuck to her bed. Not the fragile version of herself that used to need help to sit up, to speak, to walk. She thought she was strong.
Her hands tugged at the edges of her sleeves as she launched into the latest saga, the art project. It was supposed to be simple, at least she thought. How hard could painting be? Except, it wasn’t the work itself that proved to be difficult. Instead, it had come with one of the most unwelcome complications imaginable, Levi. “He’s just so…ugh,” Evie buried her face in her hands, groaned heavily and rubbed hard. The memories of how he tormented her, then most recently, his apology. It was so weird, so unlike him and she didn’t trust it. The whole thing made her stomach twist. It was infuriating. But she needed to keep her word. Move on Evie. “Anyway,” She dragged her hands down her face revealing a playful grin to her sister, “He deserved it.”
Evie glanced at the clock and sighed; curfew was creeping up. Her stomach dropped. Already? The thought of the night ending tugged at her heart in a way that surprised her. She didn’t want to say goodbye yet. Not when it felt so good to just be with her sister again. It reminded her of nights long ago, when she couldn’t walk, when her hands still trembled too much to turn pages herself. Alei would curl up beside her and read, filling the silence with stories and make-believe worlds. Back then, Evie had hated being stuck in that bed, but not those nights, those were different. Those were special- hers and Alei’s. She opened her mouth to say something about the time, but Alei beat her to it. The question was quiet yet hopeful.
Evie’s eyes widened, and instantly brightened, “Of course, Alei,” Her voice turned soft, the idea of a sleepover might seem childish to anyone else, but not to her. It meant everything, a reprieve from the chaos that came with this school. A piece of their childhood preserved like a secret between them. “Maybe we could read a story together?” She added doing her best to sound casual. But even just saying it out loud made her chest bloom with warmth. She hadn’t realized how much she missed it. The comfort of it all.
With the pressure of the clock now gone, Evie felt herself relax, then she stood up and started pacing slowly, rubbing her hands together as if trying to keep the nerves from showing. There was something else she wanted to talk about. A part of her life once kept sealed tightly away. “So…” She cleared her throat, “There’s… someone,” She tried not to look at Alei directly, eyes drifting to the floor, to the ceiling, anywhere but the pair of curious purple eyes watching her, “I sort of met someone.” The words tumbled out too quick, and her face burned. She dropped back onto the bed and picked at a loose thread on her blanket, suddenly finding it very, very interesting.
It wasn’t a secret exactly, not to herself, not to a few people who mattered. But it wasn’t something she shared either. She wouldn’t dare, especially back home. This was about Ana. Evie smiled to herself, a small, involuntary thing, “I don’t know, it’s still early, but she’s just, different...” Evie dropped the “she” deliberately, her eyes flicked to her sister, waiting for a reaction. She was unsure of what her sister would say, did she already know she liked women? Could she tell? Did it matter to her? A shiver ran down Evie’s spine as silence stretched between them. Alei was old enough now to understand this type of stuff…right? Regret started seeping into her thoughts, but she kept her cool, occasionally taking a deep breaths here and there to ground herself.

As Evie's assertion that their classmate deserved it, she couldn't help but giggle. It had certainly sounded like it to her. Then again, it was a cold day in Funkazan when Aleithia thought Evelyn was lying to her. It was even better when she was told she was allowed to stay for the night, the very prospect making her wiggle excitedly before beginning to untuck her legs from underneath of her to pad over to the admittedly slim bookshelf that Evie kept to try to find something. "Of course I can read you a story, did you h-"
Her question was cut off with Evelyn standing. Starting to... pace? Aleithia righted herself, picking at her fingernails anxiously trying to read into where this new wave of energy had come from. Had she done something wrong? Or -
The thought was cut off as Evie spoke. Someone. That was good, right? Fulfilling their parent's expectations to find a match at this school. And with how cool Evelyn was, it only made sense that someone would find her charming and witty and dazzling. That was her big sister after all. The strongest woman Aleithia knew. Yet, anxiety began to prickle at her shoulders. Mostly because what if that meant Evie would move away? Would they ever get to see each other again? The very idea left her feeling somewhat hollow.
The other reason was that she had also met someone and hadn't told anyone. Considering Nadia had apparently been mentally love bombing her while thinking she could read minds, Stephanie probably knew. But she had never told him. Which meant she also was hiding it from Evie. Because she knew it wasn't what was done. That it wasn't the 'right' choice to make. "Thats... g-good." She said, watching her sister flop onto the bed. She wanted to sound casual, like none of it bothered her. Unfortunately, her stupid tongue got in the way. Thankfully Evelyn kept going.
She.
She.
Aleithia's face stayed blank as she processed what her sister was telling her. She. It took her a minute, as if she were an automaton whirring back to life after being cranked by the operator, before her feet flew her across the room. She mentally cursed her height as she scrambled up onto the bed, taking a second longer than she wanted to getting to her sister. Then her arms flopped around Evie in an awkward hold, trying and ultimately failing to wriggle her hands underneath of her sister to be able to make it any kind of proper hug.
"Me too." Alei's voice was muffled as she nuzzled herself into the hug, trying to tell her sister everything her words always failed to when she spoke. "Me too." Tension seemed to slip out of her shoulders as she lay on Evelyn, hearing how nervous the confession had made her in every heart beat. A nervousness Alei understood. It just seemed so much less necessary now.
She let her own tiny confession hang between them for just a moment longer before she found her voice again, the quiver managing to stay out of it. "Is she wonderful? Does she make your heart flutter and your stomach do somersaults?" Alei could feel her cheeks heat, knowing that she was describing her own feelings towards Nadia. Good feelings that she wanted both Evelyn and Stephanie to feel for someone. "That's what my 'she' does to me."

Evie stared, wide-eyed, with her mouth pressed into a firm line and a deep crease tugged between her brows. What. Was. She. Thinking. “…Aleithia?” She asked, full-naming it now. That alone spoke volumes, this was serious business. Serious enough that Evie could feel the beat of her own heart heavily echoing inside her chest. Her breath caught, why wasn’t her sister saying anything? Silence stretched between them, it was suffocating. She didn’t think Alei would judge her, not really, not her sister. But still... what if she did?
Her fingers curled tight around the edge of the blanket spread across her bed, gripping so hard her knuckles went bone white. It had been seconds, maybe even minutes, but Evie had lost all sense of time. It felt like an eternity. Her gaze darted over Aleithia’s face, searching for anything, any clue, any expression, any twitch of an eyebrow. But it was unreadable. Completely and totally unreadable. A pit formed in her stomach, a heavy, dragging boulder of dread.
What if Ana wasn’t interested? She didn’t know. What if Evie had completely misread everything and just confessed something irreversible, for nothing? “Alei—” She started, breath shaky, but the name barely left her lips before it happened. Aleithia launched herself across the room and onto her bed, tackling Evie in a full-bodied hug that knocked her clean off balance. One second Evie was sitting upright, the next she was flat on her back, staring at the ceiling with a stunned look on her face as her sister squeezed the air out of her.
Aleithia was tiny compared to her, but the sheer force of the embrace knocked the wind right out of her. Evie blinked, trying to process what the hell just happened, and that’s when she heard it. It was small, and very quiet, muffled into the front of her sweatshirt.
“Me too.”
Evie froze, a beat passed, then another. Aleithia had someone. Her thoughts exploded. Who? How long? Were they serious? Was she safe? What was his intentions? But before any of those could fully take root it hit her as her sister continued talking. The ‘me too’ wasn’t just support, or simple acceptance, it was a confession, one that mirrored her own. Evie was already moving, already wrapping her arms around her sister and pulling her impossibly close. Her chest felt like it might burst, all the fear and uncertainty and dread shattered under the weight of overwhelming joy. She rolled them back and forth, laughing into Aleithia’s hair, squeezing her tightly like she never wanted to let go. For a second, just one perfect second, Evie felt like a teenager, giddy and emotional and electric with emotions. The way it was supposed to be, she never got to experience that. But now they were sharing secrets and crushes and she was having a sleepover with Aleithia. Her smile hurt it was so wide.
She pressed a kiss to the top of Aleithia’s head before finally releasing her and sitting up, her voice light, teasing, but still full of awe, “Does she now?” Evie’s chest ached in a good way, hearing that Aleithia had someone, someone who made her feel this way, it lifted a shipwreck’s weight off her shoulders. Her sister was growing up. She was growing up, and Evie couldn’t stop that. But she could hope that this path, this girl, whoever she was, didn’t hurt her. At least Aleithia was happy, that was what mattered most.
Evie sat cross-legged on the bed, hands still twisting in the blanket as her smile took on a lopsided tilt, “It’s complicated…” Ana re-surfaced in her mind, heavy with longing. That uncertainty, that flutter in her chest, that embarassing little blush she got when they were too close… “I don’t even know if she likes me,” She admitted through a breathy exhale, “My stomach definitely flips when I see her.” Right on cue, a familiar heat crept up her neck as she continued, “She’s bossy… definitely has that tough shell thing going on.” Evie’s lips twitched into a smile, “But underneath all that? There’s something different. I’ve seen it and I’ve heard it. I’ve made her laugh and, ugh, it makes me want to combust in the best way.”
She paused, then Evie’s eyes sharpened with mischief as she turned her full attention back to her sister, a devilish grin overtaking her face. “But enough about me,” She started swaying side to side playfully, “Tell me more about your ‘she.’” Evie raised a single brow, “You know I’m going to have to check her out, right?” Her tone was light, but the meaning beneath it wasn’t. She had to make damn sure that whoever made her baby sister’s heart beat faster wasn’t going to break it. Women could be just as cruel, if not worse, than men. And Aleithia deserved better than cruelty. She deserved the absolute best, and anyone wanting her heart had to go through Evie first.

Something sticky was hanging in Aleithia's belly as she waiting for a reaction from Evie. One that felt like it took an eternity to receive when in reality it was a matter of seconds. Then she was being jostled side to side. A giggle bubbled up out of her throat. One that wasn't hysterical or filled with fear. No, as she squeezed her sister tighter it was a sound of sheer, unadulterated joy. Evelyn's own laughter probably didn't help with her self control. The sound of both of them together was ringing out around them.
It felt good. It felt right. Like everything was okay. Like they were doing some sacred thing that sisters were meant to do in a way that had been robbed from them under the watchful eye of their parents. Under the weight of Evie's coma. For once they were as they were meant to be, holding each other tight and basking in that closeness.
Her sister still hadn't quite let her go, but all too quickly the moment faded into a kiss to her crown and sitting up properly to look at each other. The selfish part of Aleithia wanted to continue to writhe in the delight that had radiated from both of them during that hug. But the affectionate teasing her sister was trying to level at her went straight over her head. "Yes!" It was hard to say if the breathlessness in her voice was from the memory of pink braids or from how hard she had been giggling.
When Evelyn shifted to crossing her legs, Alei brought her knees up to her chest. She'd never liked sitting cross legged, the action pulling on her hips in a way that she didn't like and making her feel off-center. Also her kness were the perfect shelf to rest her chin as she watched Evie describe the other woman. The little blush. The way she talked about her. "If she doesn't like you, then she has bad taste." Her cheeks puffed up indignantly at the thought. Who would dare not to like her sister? Evelyn was brave and strong and so many things that Alei wished she could be. If someone couldn't see that? Well, it seemed impossible didn't it?
Then the tables were turned. Leveled right back on her shoulders as she was thrust into the spotlight. A moment of anxiety had her shifting to hide behind her knees ever so slightly. The teasing threat of checking out her girlfriend had Alei's fears melting away with a new round of giggling. Sticking her foot out, she gently nudged it against Evie's ankle. "You can meet her, but you have to be nice. She's been..." A blush now rose to her cheeks. Not sure how much she should admit. The sleepovers? The stuffed bear to go with her stuffed bunny? Maybe the beginning. With a gentle sigh, she flopped onto her back.
"During the first dance class she pulled me away from a scary partner. It started off just with tea in the gardens and reading books together in the library. Planting a few things in the garden together." Memories of the night of the explosion flooded her mind. The way they'd escaped into her room soaked to the bone. How they'd showered together. The kiss. The memory made her wiggle excitedly. Though she was aware Evie did not need to know about the showering part. "I kissed her." She breathed the words, rolling so that she could see Evelyn. "Then she kissed me back and got me a teddy bear."

Evie’s gaze softened at her sister’s words. Aleithia always saw the best in her, sometimes so much so that it could be a fault. Though, it was hard not to feel warm under that kind of affection. Maybe she was right, maybe Ana did have bad taste. But the truth was simpler, and Evie knew it, she just wasn’t into women, which was fine. She’d grown up thinking she was like everyone else, mostly because she’d never really given herself the chance to think otherwise. She’d gone along with what she thought she was supposed to feel, trying to summon excitement that simply wasn’t there. With men, there was nothing, no flutter, no heat, not even curiosity. Just… emptiness.
Women, though? That was different. The memory of her first flutter hit her, a lingering glance, the softness of a laugh, the scent of perfume that clung long after the moment ended. The curve of their lips, the warmth of their skin, the melodic softness in their voice…it could send little currents through her chest and make her lightheaded. She smirked faintly, breaking from her thoughts before Alei noticed too much, “You’re gonna give me a big head, Alei.”
Her grin widened as she tossed the attention back at her sister, the shy glances, the little giggles Alei couldn’t quite hide- it was adorable. Evie loved seeing it, loved seeing her sister this bright and alive. She leaned over playfully nudged her back, of course she’d be all smiles and charm when the time came to meet this girl, but if this mystery woman broke Alei’s heart… well, she’d regret that choice. Shifting on the bed, Evie hugged a pillow close to her chest and waited for the story to come. Whoever this girl was, she had to be something special to catch her sister’s attention. When Aleithia flopped onto her back with an exaggerated sigh, Evie arched a brow. Theatrics meant she had something big to say. And sure enough, within moments, Alei’s voice spilled into the room, the words tumbling over each other.
Evie listened like she was hearing the opening to an epic tale, because a story from Alei? That’s exactly what it was. Every detail felt deliberate, from the way she described the girl’s smile to the way her hands moved while telling it. “Scary partner?” Evie’s easy smile faltered for just a beat, her protective instincts flicking on instantly. Whoever that was, man, woman, didn’t matter, they were dead to her. She wanted to press for names, details, any little scrap of information she could use, but she forced herself to stay quiet. This wasn’t about that, not yet.
The rest of it sounded perfect. The kind of day Evie herself might have melted over if Ana had been the one beside her. The little moments Alei described, the laughter and closeness, they painted a picture that made Evie think maybe she didn’t need to worry so much. This girl had clearly looked out for her, even pulling her away from this so-called scary partner. She liked the same things as Alei and most importantly she seemed strong enough to protect her.
Yet… Evie still worried, because the more wonderful someone was, the more damage they could do. Alei, with all her softness, could be broken easily. Evie decided she’d keep an eye out whether her sister wanted her to or not.
“I kissed her.”
Evie’s eyes went wide as saucers, and her jaw dropped like she’d just heard the biggest plot twist in history, “Aleithia Nous!” She gasped dramatically, though her tone was more delighted than scandalized. She’d known this day would come, of course it would, but knowing and hearing it were entirely different. Evie had kissed women before, yes, but never anyone she truly cared about, and she was envious. This was her baby sister, kissing someone she was clearly falling for. The thought filled Evie with a strange mix of warmth and ache, like pride and protectiveness all tangled up.
Her first instinct was to pull Alei into another suffocating hug, but instead she tossed the pillow at her, lightly, though it still made a satisfying whump, “When did this happen? How could you not tell me immediately?!” Evie laughed, the sound bubbling up before she could help it. Light eyes caught the slight pink in Alei’s cheeks, and she grinned, “And you got a teddy bear? She’s already spoiling you, I see.” She shook her head with mock seriousness, “Careful, Alei. That’s how they get you. First, it’s a teddy bear. Next thing you know, she’s got you wrapped around her finger.” Still, as she watched her sister try to hide a smile, Evie couldn't help but think that maybe this girl could possibly be good enough.

She wanted to shake her sister. As if grabbing her by either shoulder and rattling around her brains would make her realize just how good of a person she was. As if it would make her realize that anyone, regardless of if they were male or female, who gained her affection and couldn't return it was the worst kind of idiot. One that probably couldn't even tie their own shoes and constantly tripped on the laces. Instead all she offered was a small pout. "It would be a well deserved big head."
Especially considering Evie was one of the few people she didn't find herself tripping over her words with. She was also listening with rapt attention, her face softening with each little story Alei told of Dia. If she was the best sister - best person - in the world would she be so invested in such small details that would bore anyone else? The same small details she couldn't share with Stephanie for fear of having her choices judged.
The thought rattled her slightly, making her look at Evie with soft eyes. Alei had only happened to like Nadia. It wasn't something that had to do with the fact that she was a woman. Nadia could have been a man and she would have felt much the same way about her. It was more to do with the bond they had managed to form between them that had caused her overwhelming attraction. But Evie... It sounded like she only liked women. It was tugging on her heartstrings to know that there was a secret that Evelyn had needed to keep from her. How lonely had that felt.
A pillow directly in her face pulled her out of her mind and back into the moment. It also made her laugh. A laugh she kept up as she rolled over and pulled herself up enough that she could crawl over and deposit herself into her sister's side. "I am very spoiled." She said, nuzzling into Evie's shoulder. "By more than just Nadia."
Grasping one of Evie's hands in her own, she looked up at her sister with shining eyes. "Tell me how you plan to woo her? I want to know all the details."

Evie was brought back to her supplemental classes, the first day she had ever met Nerys. Officially, that is. Of course, she had seen her around before, glimpsed her in passing in the hallways or seated across class with a soft concentration that was probably one of the most adorable things she had seen. But they had never spoken, not until their sessions. Even then, Nerys was still a mystery to Evie. There was something about her eyes, always seeming to ask questions she never voiced aloud. They were filled with curiosity, and that curiosity was what ruined Evie’s focus most days. Those eyes became a distraction, especially when she was supposed to be paying attention to basic grammar. The instructor’s voice faded into a dull hum whenever Nerys was nearby, her pen tapping softly against the page, lips pursed in concentration. Gods, who knew she could crush this hard on someone? Someone she still barely knew. Someone she wasn’t even sure liked her back, or liked women at all.
The mattress dipped beside her, breaking the trail of her thoughts. Alei was back, crawling toward her after she was pulverized by a pillow. Evie chuckled lowly, shaking her head. Okay, maybe pulverized was a little dramatic. Still, the moment her little sister pressed up against her side, the warmth spreading through her body was enough to wash away the week’s exhaustion. That familiar comfort, the way Alei just fit there like she belonged, made Evie feel lighter, like everything that was knotted up inside her just… unraveled. She wrapped her arm around her sister’s small frame as she leaned her chin gently against the top of her head.
Evie stared at their intertwined hands, the contrast of Alei’s smaller fingers curled within hers, and she couldn’t help but smile. It was silly, maybe, but moments like this reminded her why she tried so hard. Why she wanted to be better. Her sister deserved the world and if Alei felt spoiled, everything felt right in the world. When Alei tilted her head up, though, that expression was all too familiar. Her wide eyes that said, ‘you’re not escaping me with half answers.’ Evie sighed, squeezing her hand. She could almost see Nerys again in her mind, dark hair catching the light, that quiet little smile that lingered in her eyes. “I don’t know,” It wasn’t the answer Alei wanted, and Evie knew it. So before the inevitable protest could come, she added quickly, “As you know....we’re in supplemental lessons together…”
She’d told Alei before about the extra help that she needed. How sad it was, really. How she’d rather choke on her pride than ask anyone else for help. But Alei never judged her for it. “Maybe… I could write her something then read it to her? Or try to. Something romantic, you know?” Evie’s nose scrunched up at the thought, her expression twisted into embarrassment. The idea reading a love note felt outdated, but maybe Nerys liked things like that, cheesy gestures, silly confessions written badly on paper and read out loud even worse. Her hope was that maybe, just maybe it would impress her, that she wrote something just for her, even if she struggled with it.
Leaning her head back against the wall, she stared up at the ceiling. Perhaps she could get her a teddy bear as well? Clearly it was good enough for her sister. Her voice dropped slightly, “We haven’t spent much time together outside of lessons. Maybe I could ask her if she wanted to practice together?” She turned back to Alei, brows raised, as if waiting for her sister to hand her the secret formula to not sounding like an idiot. “I don’t know what I’m doing here, Alei,” Evie laughed softly, “This is completely out of my comfort zone.” She had always been confident, sure of herself in most things. She knew how to charm people, how to make them laugh, how to carry herself. But wooing someone? That was a different story entirely. This wasn’t about being clever or funny, this was about being honest, and that terrified her more than she cared to admit. Because for the first time, it actually mattered.

There was a raw honesty in their conversation now. One that Aleithia wasn't sure they had ever shared before. It wasn't a statement about them not being close, the time she'd spent reading to her comatose sister and the way she'd continued to read to her after the coma had robbed Evelyn of her ability was proof of that. But those interactions had been sanitized. The looming threat of their parents hearing something from a maid or coming in during a conversation making it nearly impossible to have this level of security as they spoke.
The realization of it made Alei nuzzle into her sister's shoulder a little harder while she listened. And as she did, a tiny frown appeared on her face. It was hard to think of Evie as unstoppable. Her sister was tall, strong, and capable - even if she didn't see it herself. Still, she didn't know how to direct or help the anxieties that seemed to swirl out of her as she described ideas to woo the woman that had enchanted her.
They were all such lovely ideas. The kinds of things that sounded like a romantic dream out of a fairytale that a knight would perform for his princess. A sigh escaped Aleithia as she curled into Evie. She didn’t know the right answer. Everything with Nadia had been an accident. A very happy accident, but one none the less. They had fallen into dancing together that first day of classes and it had become held hands and warm tea until it was hot showers and stolen kisses. How was she supposed to know if any of Evelyn’s ideas were the right way to woo a partner?
Still, she had to try. Especially since this was very much out of Evie’s comfort zone. “I-I think,” Nerves danced in her voice, making the words stick in her throat for a moment as she attempted to speak her opinion. Something she was starting to do more now than ever before at home. “I think that asking her to spend time outside of lessons is a lovely idea. Especially if it’s to help her learn to read a love poem you wrote for her.”
Voicing it aloud made another small sigh escape her. It really was a romantic idea. Something that felt fluttery and sweet and wonderful the more she thought about it. “We could do it together! I could write one for Nadia and you for…” She paused, scrunching up her nose as she realized that Evie had avoided giving her the name of her someone. Instead she offered a few hand gestures as if they would fill in the name for her.
Part of her wanted to hop up and get started immediately. To find two sheets of paper and curl up together on the floor passing prose back and forth about the beautiful rose of Nadia’s hair that seemed to draw her gaze like a magnet or the pretty pout of her lips. Instead she stilled for a moment, growing quiet and thoughtful as she gave her sister a squeeze. “For what it’s worth,” Starting slow, her voice was soft. “I think you have the right idea of what to do. Anyone with a single brain cell would find it romantic. But it’s scary knowing you’re doing something that isn’t wrong but the people you love might think is wrong.”

Evie chewed on the inside of her lip as her thoughts tangled themselves into a web of anxious thoughts. It would be sort of cute if she wrote her a romantic poem and read it aloud. Or maybe teach it to Nerys piece by piece. The more she thought about it, the more it felt like something she could justify to herself. Alei was right, it shouldn’t just be about the poem, it should also be about the stolen minutes after lessons and quiet corners of the academy. Each time they met, she could teach her a sentence. Eventually, they would reach the end together. And maybe by then, Evie would have a better idea of what Nerys thought about being with someone who wasn’t a man. The thought made her stomach twist in on itself with a mix of dread. But… at the end of the poem… she could ask her on a real proper date. No hiding behind the lessons. Just her and Nerys and time spent getting to know the woman who has stolen her attention.
Heat crawled up her neck, making her face burn from just the idea. Just imagining a date with Nerys made her ridiculously nervous, the kind that made her heart beat way too fast and her palms feel a little sweaty. It all became far more real when Aleithia offered to write it together. “Nerys.” The name left her mouth instinctively, as she finished her sisters sentence. Evie didn’t even realize she’d spoken until the sound of her own voice lingered in the air. What harm would it do for her sister to know Nerys’ name anyway? If anything… it would be a good thing, especially if Alei knew her. She could offer more insight. Gods, how disappointing would it be if Nerys wasn’t as good of a person as she seemed. The thought made Evie frown, only for her to shake it away almost angrily. No way, not a chance. There was literally no one in the universe, outside of Aleithia, so genuinely sweet. She hadn’t known Nerys for very long, but that kind of effortless kindness couldn’t be faked.
Her shoulders began to tighten as self-doubt began to seep in, making her shift uncomfortably. Yes, Alei would be helping her write, but how good could her own poem be? Her sister could write something pulled straight from the pages of a novel, she truly believed that. Evie’s writing, on the other hand, felt extremely clumsy, and, well, young…awkward. She was still getting used to writing at length, to trusting herself enough to put sentences together on paper. On top of that her reading skills were even worse. The thought of stumbling over her own words in front of Nerys made her want to crawl under the blankets and hide.
Before she could spiral too far down that path, she felt a gentle pressure around her. It was a grounding squeeze and more importantly it reminded her to breathe.
“For what it’s worth,”
Evie smiled at the sound of her sister’s voice, the tension in her shoulders easing almost immediately. Aleithia validated her in a way that didn’t make her fears feel bigger. Scary wasn’t exactly a word Evie liked to use. To her, it sounded like weakness, like she was small and Evie was neither of those things. But Gods be damned, it really was scary. Liking a woman was one thing, but actually going for it and acting on it? That was an entirely different beast that she would have to tackle. Light eyes lifted to meet Alei’s, and Evie’s expression softened. Her poor sister would be dealing with the same fears, the same what-ifs. At least they had each other, that knowledge settled warmly in her chest. She couldn’t imagine navigating all of this alone.
For a moment, Evie stayed perfectly still, savoring the calm between them. The quiet felt precious. She was grateful that the academy gave them these moments, these small pockets of time where they could be sisters again. Back home, walls had ears and expectations pressured them from every direction. Secrets like these would have been impossible to share so freely. “I may not know much,” Evie said finally as small chuckle escaped her, “But one thing I know for sure is that Nerys definitely has far more than one brain cell.” She laughed again, but softer this time, then dragged her free hand down her face, unsuccessfully attempting to hide the blush that flared every time she said Nerys name out loud. Reluctantly, she slipped from her little sister’s grip and crossed the room to her desk. The wood creaked faintly as she pulled out a few sheets of blank paper. Turning back, she waved them slightly with a sheepish smile that tugged at her lips, “Shall we get started on this tonight...? Or is it too soon?”

The silence lingered between them for a moment. It wasn't heavy. Instead there was a sort of peace there, like everything was suddenly right with the world. Like things were no longer tilted or shifted, but the pieces of the puzzle where suddenly starting to click into place. Then Evie spoke.
A giggle fell out of Alei. One that was accompanied by a small, silent clap. "Oh good, then she'll positively wooed by your efforts!" Evie was already shifting away from her like she'd read Alei's mind, but instead of getting up to follow she leaned up on an arm while draping the opposite hand on her forehead dramatically. "I dare say she'll turn into a puddle of goo before swooning at your prose. Then you'll ride off into the sunset to live a peaceful life in the countryside growing... flowers. Or something."
Collapsing onto the bed in a fit of giggles, she wiggled herself to the edge of the bed before putting both feet on the floor and pulling herself up to her full height. Padding over to the desk, she rooted around for a quill and some ink. "Gosh, I was hoping you would ask. I didn't want to push." Finding a pot and two quills she held them up triumphantly. "It's never too early, if you ask me. But I guess we should also do some brainstorming. Do you think we should write down all of our favorite things about Nerys and Nadia first?"
