Potions

The Potions classroom is an open space in the dungeons. Professor Chahal has added a few extra magic light sources so things are a little less dreary. Large tables are arranged so that students can work comfortably in pairs or groups of four. There's plenty of space between tables so it doesn't feel too cramped. At the front of the classroom is a large chalkboard and a table with potions equipment where Professor Chahal demonstrates the potions they are learning. On one side of the classroom is her desk and on the other side is a stock of potion supplies, including the most common ingredients and a few spare cauldrons. In the corner is a basin into which ice-cold, purified water pours from a gargoyle's mouth. There are cubbies near the door for bags and belongings. A bookshelf near the cubbies contains copies of the textbook.

The First Year's Class is held weekdays 9:00-9:45

Rowanna had to admit, she was a bit nervous to begin her first class. She had woken up around 4:00 am this morning, too jittery to go back to sleep, so she’d headed down to the classroom. If she was going to be awake anyway, she may as well be useful. The classroom was spotless and the needed ingredients were carefully placed on each table. She had also written the instructions on the black board behind her.

Today, they would be brewing a forgetfulness potion, which admittedly felt weird to be teaching to brand new first years, especially on their very first day. In fact, teaching it to anyone who didn’t have a very good reason to use it felt weird. It was really a rather dangerous potion, but who was she to argue with curriculum.

Rowan quickly made a note on the board for the students to sit wherever they would like and wait for instructions. She straightened her robes and took her place at the front of the classroom, waiting for the students to file in. She wore a bright smile as they entered, mentally seeing what names she remembered from sorting. Once the count of students matched what she had on the roll she stepped forward, pushing herself onto her toes for just a moment.

“Hello everyone,” she said in a smooth bright voice. “I’m Professor Rowanna Chahal. Welcome to your very first potions class. It is wonderful to see all of you.” Rowanna was genuinely happier than she could ever remember being. “Today we’re going to be learning the Forgetfulness Potion. It’s exactly what it sounds like. A potion that can be used to alter memory. I urge you to be extremely careful with it. No taste tests of this one. Now, I think it’s about time for me to show you just how to do this. The instructions are on the board for you to follow along.”

Rowan got to work, explaining each step as she went. Hopefully she wasn’t going too fast or anything. Either way, she was prepared to answer a whole lot of questions. She completed the first steps of the potions and left it to brew. ]“Now, this takes a bit to stew, so here’s one already on its second half,” she said pulling out a whole other cauldron. She had many. As she finished, she gave a clap.

“And there we are. Now it’s your turn. Most of the ingredients are at your tables, but the Lethe water is up with me,” she motioned to a crystal bottle next to her. “You can come up on get your two drops from me and please as you do, tell me your name. I’d like to make sure I get to know all of you. If you have any question, please don’t hesitate to ask. We don’t want mass amnesia or anything blowing up in your faces.” With that, she let them go.

                                                        Instructions
                                                        Quote:
                                                        1. Add 2 drops of Lethe River Water to your cauldron
                                                        2. Gently heat for 20 seconds
                                                        3. Add 2 Valerian sprigs to your cauldron
                                                        4. Stir 3 times, clockwise
                                                        5. Wave your wand
                                                        6. Leave to brew

                                                        7. Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to the mortar
                                                        8. Add 4 mistletoe berries to the mortar
                                                        9. Crush into a medium-fine powder using the pestle
                                                        10. Add 2 pinches of the crushed mixture to your cauldron
                                                        11. Stir 5 times, anti-clockwise
                                                        12. Wave your wand to complete the potion.

Carter followed the first-year herd to the dungeon for her first potions class. She was nervous, wondering if she would excel at this class. She probably wouldn't be, but there might be some small semblance of hope. She was meant to be a historian or artist, if you can't restore art as art itself, not a potions master. She only wanted to learn if there was an easier way to varnish the paintings that came through her Papa's shop, or something to clean up the sculptures without hard scrubbing.

However, walking into the potions class, she fell in love with how inviting the room was. She had assumed the dungeon would mean somewhere deary and desolate; however, the classroom was full of light. The teacher seemed kind, and she smiled, which made her feel more at ease as she took her seat. She pulled out her notebook and slowly wrote the recipe on the board.

When the Professor stood up front and introduced herself, Professor Chahal, and spoke about what they would be doing. Carter finally glanced up when the Professor mentioned the 'forgetfulness potion.' Carter thought about her wand in a different part of the classroom, in her bag, because of how often she forgot to put it in her robes. This is the least helpful potion for me. I already forget everything.

She groaned as she listened to the instructions, certain she would accidentally forget something important while making this potion. However, she was happy Professor Chahal was willing to demonstrate the potion. Carter took extra care to write notes next to each instruction, watching closely as the Professor made the forgetfulness potion. It was like watching one of the cooking shows her Nana loved, complete with a second caldron. It was amazing to watch, and Carter only hoped she might make a slightly passable version of the potion.

When Professor Chahal dismissed them with a clap, Carter walked up to the front of the room to get the drops of Lethe River Water. When it was her turn, she looked down at her feet; her notebook hugged in her chest as she addressed the teacher. "Hi, I'm Carter. It's nice to meet you." She muttered to Professor Chahal before looking at her notes. "I noticed that step five says, 'Wave your wand.' Is there a specific motion I need to wave it in? And in step six, how long do I leave it to brew? Also, in step twelve, does it matter what motion that wave is?"

Carter looked up at the Professor; her eyebrows knit together in confusion as she thought more about the potion. The forgetfulness potion seemed like a bad one to brew. After all, one mistake and Carter could create a mass amnesia event. She shuddered at the thought. I'm doomed.

              Where: Potions Class
Current Thoughts: Don't create a mass amnesia event
              Why: Brewing Forgetfullness Potion
Fun Fact: Issac Newton was a dedicated alchemist

Rowanna finished setting up the last few things she would need for class. All the ingredients they would need for today’s potion was arranged on each of the tables in glass jars and bottles. She also lit a candle on her desk so the whole room smelt lightly of cinnamon. Any way to cozy up the dungeon. Once it was all perfect she returned to her desk and waited for the class to enter. Once she made a count to see that all of the students were there, she stood up with a clap.

“Welcome everyone, lovely to see all of your bright, happy faces.” Well, at least a few of them were bright, happy faces.“Today we are going to be learning how to brew a Wiggenweld Potion. It’s a healing potion, especially effective for sterilizing injuries. It’s also been known to give a stamina boost to the drinker if there is no injury present, though it’s not always a guarantee.” She made sure to add that little note, hoping to deter any abuse. She’d seen firsthand students overusing potions to increase their performance, whether academically or otherwise.

“I’m going to fully admit to you, this is one of the most annoying potions to make. It’s not necessarily difficult, just tedious.” Rowan thought for a moment before adding, “Also, if you happen to be colorblind, let me know, as every single step is based on the color your potion is turning.”

“Now, we're starting with water of all things. A surprisingly uncommon ingredient in potions. The water has been measured out on your tables, so add that to your cauldrons and we’ll start from there.” Rowanna gave a quick demonstration before acknowledging the class once again. “Fun fact, if you ever find yourself in a pinch, the dittany can be substituted with diluted bubotuber puss to decent effect.” She’d done it herself before. “The instructions are on the board, but if you have any questions, please ask.”

                                                            Quote:
                                                            1. Add salamander blood until the potion turns red.
                                                            2. Stir until the potion turns orange.
                                                            3. Add more salamander blood, until the potion turns yellow.
                                                            4. Stir until the potion turns green.
                                                            5. Add more salamander blood, until the potion turns turquoise.
                                                            6. Heat until it turns indigo.
                                                            7. Add more salamander blood until the potion turns pink.
                                                            8. Heat until the potion turns red.
                                                            9. Add five lionfish spines.
                                                            10. Heat until the potion turns yellow.
                                                            11. Add five more lionfish spines.
                                                            12. Add Flobberworm Mucus, until the potion turns purple.
                                                            13. Stir until it turns red.
                                                            14. Add more Flobberworm Mucus, this time until it turns orange.
                                                            15. Stir till it turns yellow.
                                                            16. Add Honeywater until it turns back to a turquoise colour.
                                                            17. Add another few drops of boom berry juice.
                                                            18. Stir the potion again, then let it simmer for fifteen minutes.
                                                            19. Take the potion away from the heat and allow it to cool.
                                                            20. When it cools down, it is ready for consumption.

Rowan was smiling brightly as she prepared for class. The beginning of a new year was always exciting for her. Meeting her cute new students and teaching the very important (though she was biased) art of potioneering. She really did love this job.

With a flick of her wand, she lit a cinnamon candle in the corner just as the first students began to stroll in. As they did she said, “Just take a seat wherever you’d like and prepare your cauldrons. Will begin once everyone is here.” It was only a few minutes before the correct number of students were accounted for. She recognized a few of the faces from sorting and she hoped it wouldn’t take her long to place all of them.

“Alright,” she said, smiling brightly at the students. “Welcome! My name is Professor Chahal and I will be your potions teacher. We’ll be working on your first potion today, but before we do that, I wanted to ask you all a question just to see your general familiarity with potions.”It would hopefully help her gauge what specifics of potion making they needed to focus on. “I just want a few of you to raise your hands and tell me a potion you know and what it does. Also if you happen to know any of its ingredients, I’d love to hear them. If I call on you, please start with your name and house so I can start getting to know you.”

After she had gotten a few answers, she nodded. “Perfect, thank you. Now, today we’ll be learning what I consider one of the most important potions; the Wiggenweld Potion. It’s a healing potion with several uses. It can sterilize wounds, heal small ones like cuts and scraps, and acts as an antidote to the Draught of Living Death. If you intend to go into Healing of any sort, this potion is an absolute necessity, but it’s also something quite useful in your day to day life, no matter your career. Since this is your first potion, I’ll lead you through step by step. All the ingredients are on your tables, but make sure you’re reading the labels as you go along. Putting things in the wrong order or wrong amounts can ruin your potion completely…or even worse.” She’d seen seemingly innocuous potions blow up more than once. “Oh, and if anyone happens to be coloured blind, let me know.” She then began to lead them through the potion.

                                              Quote:
                                              1. Add salamander blood to the cauldron until it turns red.
                                              2. Stir until the potion turns orange.
                                              3. Add more salamander blood, until the potion turns yellow.
                                              4. Stir until the potion turns green.
                                              5. Add more salamander blood, until the potion turns turquoise.
                                              6. Heat until it turns indigo.
                                              7. Add more salamander blood until the potion turns pink.
                                              8. Heat until the potion turns red.
                                              9. Add five lionfish spines.
                                              10. Heat until the potion turns yellow.
                                              11. Add five more lionfish spines.
                                              12. Add Flobberworm Mucus, until the potion turns purple.

Via had awoken earlier than normal, definitely feeling jitters about her first day of classes. She had dressed smartly in her new Ravenclaw robes, only to examine herself in the mirror and hum with a small frown. Yes, she looked smart, but she wasn't sure if "smart" was really her style. She decided on untucking her shirt and letting it drape over her skirt, as well as loosening her tie a bit and undoing the top button that held the collar together. That would do. She would rather be comfortable in her classes, as she felt she'd be able to learn more that way.

Her first class was down in the dungeons, a rather dreary place to start, if she was being honest. But it was Potions, which was something that she was admittedly curious about. She hadn't done too much study on them, but conceptually, potion making was pretty fascinating.

Entering the dark classroom, Via nodded her head to the professor as she went to take her seat, setting down her bag and cauldron and getting things ready while she waited. She had a small flame started beneath the vessel, which contained nothing but pure water for the moment. While other students filed in, she tucked her hair behind her ear a bit nervously. She really wanted to do well... she just hoped that she was adept enough to succeed.

When Professor Chahal introduced herself and asked the class if they knew of any potions, Via thought back for a moment. There was one that she remembered her father speaking about, though not in great detail. Still, it was something better than nothing, so she raised her hand slowly. When she was called on, she spoke with quiet confidence. "Erm, Octavia Gorman, Ravenclaw... I have heard of a potion called Felix Felices, also known as Liquid Luck. It charms the drinker into having a sort of magical intuition that ensures that they succeed in their endeavors... I don't know what ingredients you need to make it, though." Putting her hand down slowly, she stopped talking, content to focus on the lesson.

The potion that they were learning today was the Wiggenweld Potion, and from what the professor said, it was indeed very handy for anyone to know how to make. Turning to the correct page in her textbook, Via began skimming over the instructions carefully, making a plan as to how she would execute each step. When they were given clearance to begin, Via got her ingredients ready first off, separating them in their proper amounts and arranging them on the table in the order she would need them. Then she read the first few steps again and committed them to memory, before starting with the salamander blood.

Octavia worked carefully, her eyes laser focused as she added, stirred, added, stirred, keeping a close watch on the shifting colours within the cauldron. When it was time, she increased the flame and let the mixture heat, before adding more of the blood and heating it again. She continued this way, glancing back at her book in between steps to ensure that she was following them correctly. Soon enough, she had gotten through the last ingredients on her table, and was at the stage where she simply had to let the brew simmer. She kept an eye on the hourglass on the table. While she could relax for a bit, she couldn't forget to remove it from the heat when it was time.

She spent a bit of time looking around to other students while they worked, curious how their potions were turning out. When the twenty minutes had passed, she turned off the heat beneath her cauldron and let it sit for a while, finally exhaling. She had no idea how well it had turned out, but she had done her best. She felt fairly confident that it should be a good potion, even if it was her first try.
