It was nice having most things at her finger tips. Food wasn’t scarce. She actually hadn’t been able to keep up with the amount of food they were trying to feed her in the last couple of weeks. They had a pool. Even crazier, Mercuria was allowed to go in it when it wasn’t frozen. If she wanted something, she could ask the staff and they would set it up for her.
It still sucked here, to be clear.
The hoop she was currently hanging off of was just a distraction. That was all it was. A safe place to think where Steve couldn’t reach her to get her in trouble again. Levi had gotten weirdly soft with her recently and Mercuria didn’t like it. Which might have had something to do with why, exactly, she was hiding from him. He knew too much and, worst of all, she didn’t know exactly what he knew.
So, like, hoops. It was easier to arch her back, looping one leg around the metal as she inverted herself and extended her arms and free leg. Focusing on exactly what each muscle was doing and how it was doing it was better for her anyway.
Or something. That’s probably what Pickles would have said, anyway. Mercuria just needed to channel her inner Pickles for most of this stupid experiment anyway until they sent her home. Or, you know, her inner Papi. Which was what she had done far more than her inner Pickles.
Oops.
Her nose crinkled, letting out a laugh at the thought as she twisted herself to change poses.

"Speaking #AAAAFF""Thinking #749dc3" After the time Oliver had been having, the prince was finding more and more solace in his evening walks alone. With all the drama and mishaps that had been occurring, much to his own fault, it was nice to pretend to be away from it all. Sometimes Gwen would manage to find him alone and try and speak to him, but thankfully, he had managed to avoid her for this evening. It was just him and the trees.
And the circus performer?
Last he had checked, there was no carnival on campus, but there was definitely a clown ahead of him. Rubbing his eyes, he was sure he was mistaken, but the figure remained the same. The girl managed to bend her way through the metal hoops with ease, making Oliver unsure if it was some parlor trick, powers, or just talent. Getting a closer look at the woman, Oliver feared the woman might harm herself, but the look on her face said something different. She was laughing? To herself?
It didn’t make much sense to him, but it felt odd to watch her for too long without introducing himself. The worst that could happen had already happened; Oliver was a man with no fear. Walking over to the girl suspended on the hoops, he mustered a smile, ” Room for one more?” He chuckled a bit as he pointed to the large hoop. Imagining himself actually attempting to do any of the tricks she was mastering seems near impossible to him, but he needed a laugh. Looking at the girl’s garb, Oliver found it curious how she didn’t feel strange dressing in such a way in a place like this unless she was a performer. But Oliver swore she looked familiar.
Getting closer to the tree and its branches, Oliver was able to get a closer look at the girl’s face. He was sure he had seen it before, but unsure if it was in classes or if they were another person’s handmaiden. ” Oliver is my name. Not that you asked.” His voice quivered as the silence continued, but not wanting fear to control him, he decided to stay. ” And yours?”

   ”Room for one more?”
The question startled her, making Mercuria’s eyes snap open. What she found was a warm, smiling face several shades darker than her own as blue met blue eyes. Except she was upside down. Which made him upside down. Exactly how dumbfounded she felt must have shown on her face, because he motioned at the hoop like she didn’t understand what he had meant.
To be fair, she supposed she hadn’t really understood what he meant. Not when the idea of him attempting to pose on the hoops dressed in full flannel crossed her mind. Her silence incensed him, unable to form the right words to ask him what the ******** before he introduced himself.
Right. Well then.
Twisting herself back up to grasp the hoop with her hands, she started uncurling her legs from their anchored position. ”I mean I guess, but have you ever tried anything like this before?” As her body unfurled and her legs slowly lowered to the ground she gave him a once over. “Like,I don’t want to get in trouble if you fall and bump your widdle princely head. That s**t isn’t on me.”
She was on her feet again, arms folded over her chest and cocking her hip out to the side. The action was even more exaggerated in her outfit, she knew, but there was amusement on her face. Because she did actually kind of want to watch the mess he would make of the hoops. And maybe to also see a royal bonk their head from being stupid.
Reaching out, she made a grabbing gesture with her hand. “If you’re using my hoops, I want the flannel. It’s ******** cold out here.” Her eyes narrowed, realizing she had forgotten something. “Oh, right. And Mercuria.”

"Speaking #AAAAFF""Thinking #749dc3" It wasn’t hard for Oliver to imagine how idiotic he must seem, given his appearance. Baggy jeans and a sweater were rather casual compared to the outfit the stranger in front of him was wearing. Expecting an immediate “no”, Oliver hadn’t planned for what he would do if she had actually entertained the idea. But life had proven to be full of surprises this time around. The prince shook his head at her question about his experience and then bit his lip at the mention of his status.
” A prince- how did you-” Stopping himself before finishing the sentence. It wasn’t exactly like his status would become secret if she had been working at the academy for some time now. Had she waited on him before? Oliver was sure that he had recognized her from somewhere, but it was hard to place her. Her face was hidden by lace and a large bow, and the loud print on her outfit made it hard to look at anything besides her body, especially with the amount of ease she was able to move around.
Still, if she were a servant, she was quick to drop the act when other staff weren’t around, which was something Oliver admired. The idea that didn’t care about him hurting himself and more about getting in trouble was enough to force out a chuckle, ” I assure you I am more than capable of getting hurt without your assistance. But I can put something in writing if you need.” He joked, knowing there was no way of proving he had said such a thing if he had gotten harmed.
” My flannel?” Oliver looked down at his outfit. She was probably doing him a favor by helping him lose another layer. Sliding the flannel off his body and handing it to the woman, he offered another smile, ” Here you go, Mercuria.” He slowly said her name, hoping it would help place her, not wanting to seem rude when she clearly knew him already.
Then it clicked. There had been a recent announcement about a lost Princess from Luna, and her name had been Mercuria. Oliver remembered reading about it in a recent paper, but the picture in the paper didn’t do the girl justice. And they had said she was around his age, and this girl looked like she couldn’t be older than 17, given her weight and stature. It had to be a coincidence. Especially since she had expressed such distaste for him being a royal himself.
Looking at the hoop, Oliver was sure this was a quick way for him to fall on his head or back but didn’t want to back down now. ” What’s the cost for another demonstration?” he looked at the girl, hoping she would get on the hoop another time so he could observe further, ” I’d offer my sweatshirt but the last thing I need is a staff thinking I am playing some sort of strip game with someone other than my fiancée.”
Yes. He was going to be a good little man now. Making waves and falling for someone outside of Gwen had gotten him in hot water before, and it was better to just come clean before this stranger got the wrong idea. Oliver had closed himself off from love, focusing only on staying afloat.

At his response to her calling him a prince, her mouth parted ever so slightly and her eyes narrowed. Was he... was he slow? That was, like, the whole point of this shitty school, right? Everyone here was a prince or princess. Which was impressive considering the sheer amount of students. Kings and queens must get busy a lot to make this many heirs. Or maybe she was out of touch with exactly how many kingdoms there were. Maybe some had broken off during the war and made their own kingdoms.
"Eh, it's your neck not mine. Would take me too long to read it anyway, you would probably have already fallen and knocked yourself out. Who am I to stop you if you have a death wish?" Actually, she was probably the perfect person to stop him considering she was literally able to see the strings of fate. If she was lucky maybe he would pay for a reading and she could use that money for a swimsuit. Maybe she did need her cards right about now.
Before she could remember where she'd left them - probably somewhere with her coat but who knew where that was - he was dropping his outer layer into her hands. It was warm. Greedily, Mercuria shoved her arms into the sleeves and wrapped it around herself. Once the residual heat wrapped around her, she let out a little full body shiver. One that forced a small sound out of her mouth.
After a beat she remembered she was supposed to be royalty. And also what manners were. "Thanks. You kinda get lost in the sauce up there and forget it's cold." Her blue eyes looked up at him, curiosity shining in them. "How the hell would the staff find out?"
Almost as soon as the words were out of her mouth, she shook her head. "Actually, I don't really care. I'm not assuming you're macking on me. And if you are?" Her eyes narrowed. "Stop." They immediately unnarrowed, and she looked back over at the hoop.
"I could lie and tell you a ridiculous amount, but even I'm not that much of a b***h." Looking back at Oliver, she smiled. Her first genuine smile since he'd arrived at the clearing and interrupted her. "Just give me ten minutes to warm up and I can show you. In the meantime, what brings you out here Oliver?" She said his name slowly, deliberately copying the way he'd said hers just to be annoying.

"Speaking #AAAAFF""Thinking #749dc3" The lack of confidence coming from this stranger upon just moments of meeting him was astounding. Oliver blamed himself for setting the bar so low and fishing for compliments. Others had advised him that it was time for him to start speaking more positively about himself in front of others. He was a prince after all. About time he started acting like it, even if he didn’t feel like he deserved the title. ' Probably because I don’t.' Oliver reminded himself.
The smile on his face remained at the girl’s joke. Oliver had to assume it was one, considering they had just met. ” Death wish, thrill seeker, who’s to say?” Oliver certainly didn’t know. At this point, he had been in so many near-death scenarios, he was starting to question if this was like one of those hypotheticals where he was dead and this was just his spirit's way of coping. But Oliver thought little of what came after death. It was easier to panic about the s**t going on around him in the present as opposed to the future.
” Lost in the sauce? I am afraid I am not familiar.” He chuckled, thinking about the woman being covered in some imaginary mayonnaise. One of the joys Oliver had forgotten about when he first arrived was the different turns of phrases each nation had, not to mention the other cultures and languages. It was conversations like this that reminded him that he was enjoying himself for a moment before his brother, no, Oliver himself, had ruined it all.
As to her next question, Oliver was sure that she wasn’t expecting an answer, but the prince couldn’t help himself. ” My brother has a habit of finding me at my worst. Or his spies do at least.” Was it worth mentioning to her that climbing hoops wasn’t frowned upon where he came from? It was more the idea of him being alone with a cute girl that was. Wait, no. Not cute. This stranger was just some girl. Oliver grimaced at the misstep of his thinking.
It didn't matter because the girl appeared to be some mindreader anyhow. Calling him out for his thoughts. His brain hadn’t even considered the idea of her lips, but she was quick to shut the idea down anyway. It wasn’t just himself that thought of himself so lowly, but still, it stung. ” I didn’t dream of suggesting we did mack as you so delicately put it. Fiancee, remember?” Oliver thought about flashing his hand, but there was no ring for him to provide, just his word what little that meant to the woman.
Upon reflecting for a moment and giving his brain a chance to breathe, he realized that Mercuria had never implied that it was his intention. It was just his own anxiety getting the best of him. ” My apologies, the topic is just a bit of a sensitive matter.” Hopefully, she forgave him. Oliver wasn’t sure if he would, but she was better than he was. Considering how low a bar that was, he wasn’t sure how her feelings would lie.
” I didn’t think you were.” Oliver interjected at her insult to herself. ” A b***h, I mean.” The word felt ugly coming out of his mouth, but he tried his best to hide his discomfort. Her smile left him a bit more at ease. It was the first time in the conversation that Oliver felt like she was being genuine in her pleasure as opposed to him being a nuisance up until this point. ” You’ve been nothing but nice to me so far, giving me plenty of grace, I must admit.”
Her saying his name was sure to be some sort of game to her, but Oliver couldn’t help but enjoy hearing it from the girl’s lips. It was fun for him to think about how she might try and engage with him next, as long as she didn’t attempt to stab him, he would consider their conversation a success. ” I originally was attempting to be alone with my thoughts, but seeing you, I couldn’t help myself. That was the truth.
Wait. Did that sound as bad as he thought it did? ” I meant you looked so graceful and at ease, I thought maybe you could help me achieve the same!” His eyes stared at her for the first time in a while, attempting to scan her reaction, finding himself looking at her lips. They were small, but cute. Just like everything about her was. Would Oliver even need to use his abilities to pick her up? Not something he wanted to ask at this moment, but the thought lingered as he found himself digging himself yet another hole.

She laughed at him not know what she was trying to say, realizing that the phrase 'lost in the sauce' didn't translate. Oh what she would pay to have mind reading powers right about now to know what mental image he was conjuring up. It was probably something ridiculous like swimming in ketchup. "You know, zoinked out? In the zone? Just totally losing a grip on where you are, what you're doing? Like that but, like, floatier."
Leaning in, she looked around conspiratorially. Doing everything to make it seem like she was going to whisper and let him in on a huge secret. Her eyes widened as she looked up at him, her arms still folded over her chest to keep the shirt closed and blissfully warm. "Your brother sounds like a d**k." She was not, in fact, whispering. She might have been saying it a little louder than necessary to make sure if there were spies they heard it. Brother McDouche could suck on that.
Then she was leaning back again, shaking her head. "Yeah, yeah. But being engaged doesn't stop people most of the time. Hell, being married doesn't stop people." Scrunching up her nose, she attempted to muster all of the strength up in her body that she could manage. Then she pulled his flannel off. The air hitting her felt even colder, if that was even possible. But she was ignoring it, instead waving her hand at him as she walked back to her hoop. "Like, I know I've seen some s**t, so I'm sure you have too. But if it helps you, for the record I didn't think you were hitting on me. And if you were, you already know better now."
With a small jump, she caught the ring in her hands. Looking over her shoulder, she offered him a smile. "'Aight, this is when you should actually start paying attention, pretty boy." Then she was pulling herself up with her arms, twisting her body so that she could tangle a leg around the hoop. The other leg followed quickly after that. Then she just let herself hang there for a moment.
"If you think this is being nice your brother must be a massive a**." Letting go, she folded her arms over her chest and let herself just hang by her legs for a moment. "Sure, I'm not stomping my feet and cussing you out to try to chase you off, but I haven't exactly been pleasant to you either. I don't trust all of you royals yet." The frown that had already been on her face shifted into a grimace. She probably should get used to considering herself one of them... right? Who knew how long she would be staying at this school to play pretend.
Then he started digging his little grave right there where he stood and her face went flat. "Stop it. You're being weird." With a sigh, she shifted her position. Using her arms she righted herself up so she was sitting on the ring, the movement making it twirl as she looked at him. "I get the whole pull of a weird circus trick, you don't have to over explain. Sometimes saying less is fine."
It took her a second before her spine went rod straight. Biting her lip, Mercuria considered whether or not he would register that she'd just said too much. That she'd hit too close to home. Maybe not, he was kind of a goofball. So she let herself fall back, catching herself with her knees as she reached out for Oliver. "You gonna try getting up here or what?"
